For those that use lye, would any of you classify yourselves as sensitive scalp or "burn easy"?

Yes, and I never knew there were no lye options until last year, LOL!

I always used Mizani I only burned when my stylist used the super instead of the regular. After that experience I always made sure they used regular and I didn't have any problems.

Back at home I used homemade lye relaxers :( that's what everyone used as relaxers were not sold in stores. When they started to sell them in stores and I could afford them I used Dark & Lovely, Fabulaxer and a Dominican relaxer that burned like heck.
When I arrived in Canada I started using ORS relaxer and switched to Affirm Normal strength when I moved to Alberta. I had lots of damage until I switched to the Mild strength(Affirm). I love that relaxer and will continue using it, I like it because it straightens my hair without burning at all, lists the % of lye on each strength right there on the tub, and I love the Positive Link and the 5-in-1 reconstructor. in fact, at the local beauty store they now require a stylist licence # to buy Affirm and I flirted with the owner and he let me buy the big tub, lol. It should last me 2 years. :)

I don't know if my scalp is sensitive or not, but almost every time I got a relaxer that was lye whether I applied it or my stylist I got burns. Even if I based really well, I would still burn or start to have discomfort a little. Usually the discomfort or burns would happen during the smoothing part of the application. I just think my scalp can't handle lye relaxers at all.

The Fiberguard Sensitive Scalp no lye has not burned me ever. I have been using this for almost a year. I don't even base my scalp. I just base around the hairline, nape, and ears.

always used dark n lovely for 10 years, but i'm seriously contemplating switching cos i'm having discoloration and my hair is so hard

I've used:

Mizani Butter Blend LYE - I feel like this relaxer was a bit on the strong side. The results were just ok honestly
ORS NO-LYE - I've only used it once, but I liked it a lot. Left my hair with body but a little on the dry side. I think I'll be sticking with a Lye relaxer moving forward.

My next relaxer I'll be trying Alter Ego Linange Shea Butter Relaxer LYE.

I've used many. So many I don't remembr. I would go to the salon & used whtevr thy had.
I started with revlon. Then gentle treatment(hair broke off)
scalp started burnin aftr 10 yrs of lye..switchd to no lye.
creme of nature no lye-used for years
optimum no lye (i use now)
motions, silk elements left me underprocessed

A long time ago I used Gentle Treatment. It was a very good relaxer. But it stopped working for some reason.:perplexed:

Then I went to Dark and lovely. I LOVED it! :lick:

But then I found longhaircareforum and started listening to the lye vs. no lye stuff and went to Mizani BB mild lye. That was a BIG mistake!!! Mizani ASSASINATED my hairline and nape!:wallbash:

So i'm back to my beloved Dark and Lovely, And we are very happy together.:look:

Yes. I've been diagnosed with eczema and psoriasis of the scalp. But once I started using EVOO on my hair and scalp, I haven't had a flare up. I use lye relaxer and love it.

Great thread!

I plan to relax soon and would like to know where do you get Mizani relaxer?

I've used:
-Just for me (as a kid)
- Dark and lovely
- Motions
- soft and beautiful
-silk elements

Now: mizani lye relaxer

started with first relaxer in college.. optimum lye
then used that until i switched to affirm lye
then went to ORS ( hair broke off)
then found Phyto-Relaxer ( hair grew back)- i loved this product ( didn't like the price)
NOW using the new Creme of Nature with organic oils- no lye- best one so far, my hair felt soft and moisturized ( not stripped) directly after rinsing out the relaxer, then felt even better after i shampooed, then it was silky smooth after conditioning.

Well I know I got kiddie perms back in the day but as far back as I can remember I have used S&B Sensitive Scalp Relaxer, after using a Dominican brand that was too strong, for years because I used to struggle with flaky scalp.

Highly recommend S&BSSR for anyone who burns easy or who has a flaky scalp!

Now that I have a healthy scalp I started using Optimum then changed to, for no apparent reason, S&B Ultimate Protection w/ Oil Relaxer for the last couple of years which was perfect for me!

Now after having my hair highlighted in Feb, I use Affirm per the recommendation of my Korean BSS owner. That relaxer right there, that relaxer right there was the BOMB! I was so impressed because I could not seem to find one that was geared to women with color and a relaxer - JACKPOT!

So Affirm it will be until all this color grows out!

:)

I've used a few. Started with Just for Me. I used Olive Oil for a while, but it made my hair hard. I tried Dr. Miracle's and only used it twice. My staple is Profectiv. The relaxer leaves my hair feeling, soft and strong, and it looks so healthy.

Back in the day these are the relaxers mainly used on my hair:

Revlon
Bantu
Lady Velvet
Vitale
Motions
Creme of Nature

I've used:

Mizani Butter Blend LYE - I feel like this relaxer was a bit on the strong side. The results were just ok honestly

I still have not relaxed since I posted my response above, but I did relax my mother's hair with the Linange relaxer and it is by far the best relaxer I've used on her hair. She has very fine, thin hair due to medication and this left her hair incredibly moistuized with body. I was so surprised at how full her hair appeared. And it's a very gentle relaxer, she had absolutely no burning. I cannot wait to use this on my hair whenever I decide to relax.

Ha ha. I'm 40, and started relaxing when I was 12 or 13!!

At first it was this *crazy* strong relaxer from the DR that my mother's best friend wold bring back for us called "Perma Strate." That crap could (and DID-don't ask) take the paint off a car. Ugh. I can't believe I actually put that on my poor head.

Then I went to drugstore boxed (no-lye) stuff- can't remember the names. It didn't burn as bad, maybe because I got the medium or maybe because it was no-lye, but my hair was nothing but straw with it.

Then I went through a period of using a thio- based relaxer from Sally's called OneNOnly. No scalp burns, but by the time I was done, my BSL length hair above my shoulders. And, no, I wasn't cutting it.

I think this is when I first joined LHCF and started using Silk Elements mild. I'm still using it every 8-12 weeks, although I would really like to start stretching for 3-4 months.

What a journey.

Prior to finding LHCF, I've used quite a few including Soft N Beautiful, Dark N Lovely, Revlon. Since finding LHCF, I've only used two - ORS No Lye - which left me under-processed each time and Africa's Best, which I have used twice and works perfectly.

Dark n Lovely- I hated it! always left my hair dry and hard.

African Pride- Made my scaple feel like it was on fire. And left my hair crunchy.

ORS Olive Oil- I still use as my 2nd choice if I cant find # 1 Orangics Olive Oil Afirca's Best love, love!!!!

I started years ago with Dark n Lovely and would also use Cream of Nature and Optimum. Revlon Realistic burned like crap and always left my scalp weeping.

I'm and ORS Olive Oil girl now, but I did use an Optimum last year while out of the country.

No lye relaxers always got my hair strait. Lye relaxers, for my hair, only texturized my hair. The only time I burned is when a professional did my hair.:look:
