Even though I don't consider my hair long (currently full APL) I guess to some people's standard it's a nice length. I had it in a high ponytail yesterday and it probably came a couple of inches past my shoulders.

Anyways, last night I went to the movies with an old friend who hasn't seen my real hair in a while and you should have seen her eyes when I hopped in the car. Initially she looked at my hair, rolled her eyes and didn't say anything...so I'm thinking here we go.

So as we're on our way to the movies chit chatting out of no where in mid conversation she yanks my ponytail and says, "is that all your hair?" My first response was to smack her hand away but I figured all this hard work I put into my hair, go on and let her have a tug. Then she starts asking me how I grew it and how she wants to grow hers (her hair is currently neck length but damaged from a relaxer). The whole night she kept commenting on how nice it was and kept tugging at my ponytail (that did start to irritate me after a while). :wallbash:
After giving her some tips and telling her about protective styling I was able to talk her into considering going natural since it seems like the relaxers haven't been working for her.

While the compliments felt great it made me more happy that I could help someone else out with their hair...honestly I think that's the part I enjoy most about having healthy hair. :yep: Just wanted to share....

That's good girl. I know the tugging got on ur nerves but at least u were able to convince her to try and get her hair healthy

It felt great, since being natural I'm so use to people trying to give me advice about what I should do with my hair cuz it's not bone straight like theirs. Now I can finally show them why I've been wearing all those protective styles and they can see the benefits for themselves. :yep:

I hear you!! I love to talk hair, but I really haven't because I don't want to sound like a lunatic, going on and on about my hair. I am just waiting for the day when my hair will inspire its own questions!

Good for you!

I think after reading a lot of post about weave checking when I get to my goal length I am going to karate kid people who try to touch my hair! LOL

But I can't wait to get to a teaching length! Congrats

*Throws a hissy fit*

I wanna get weaved checked toooooo!!!!
Awww, you probably have and just didn't know it. I think most people admire from afar...it's them bold people that feel like they have a right to touch/grab, that you have to watch out for.:ohwell:

Why is it that people always ambush you with the weave check? It's like they PLAN to ambush you so that you will not have time to move away.

I sometimes airdry my co-washed hair in a low ponytail that I braid and clip a small barrette on the end. Well, I was once at the airport checking in at the ticket counter and while I was putting my suitcase on the scale, my head was jerked back ever so slightly by this older black lady behind me pulling on my braid.

I just...was so shocked that I could not even react. I mean...she tugged it BOLD right there as though I were not a real person! Or as if I knew her or something. When I turned around with a major stankeye, she played it off all sweet like, "omg, your hair is so purty! that is all yours in that braid isn't it?" All I could do was nod and give her a side eye. I was so stunned at the audacity.

Yeah, it's almost like people think it's their duty to check or they have some kind of right. I don't get it...I would never do that, expecially to a stranger.:nono:

I feel you. I can't stand getting weave checked. my blood boils when I feel finger nails go cross my scalp or a piece of hair pop. OOOOMG, it's on when that happens.
On happy note lol, keep up the great work on your hair. happy growing.

I love getting weave-checked... I know exactly how the convo is gonna go...

1. They ask me what I do to my hair and I tell them

2. They start listing products they use (all of which are full of "cones/mineral oil/petrolatum") but is "infused" with olive oil or aloe vera.

3. I avoid the part where I explain why (cones/mineral oil/petrolatum) are bad because you can't tell black people anything about hair... I mean, their [permanent] SL hair is so healthy right? right?:ohwell:

4. I am then told that they are going to go natural... which translates to "I'm getting my hair braided and I'm not gonna do anything to my hair for the next 3 months and when it's time to take them out I'll wonder why I have so much breakage.":hammer:

I haven't gotten weave checked in years :(

Congratulations on your weave check and keep up the good work!

Wait I have but she doesn't count LOL !

Aww these stories are sweet! OP: Its nice that you were able to help your friend...but I dont't think I would have been able to take all that tugging on my hair...

One time I had just got outta class and this girl in my class tugged my hair. This was the night after I had stayed up late flat ironing it..I was so pissed I almost cursed her out. I didn't but I'm not going to repeat the words that were said..lol

OMG, this is so true. I kind of got the impression that's what she meant by going natural because she immediately mentioned getting braids. I wanted to go more into detail about taking care of your hair while in a protective style but we were at the movies. I figured I would go into more detail later but just by her laying off the relaxer for a bit might be a pretty good start.

I would Looooove to get weave checked, But I'm sure after the first couple of times I'm going to end up getting irritated with it lol

Why do people assume that tugging on someone's hair will reveal whether a person's hair is weave or real? Weaved hair is sewn in so it's almost as firmly attached as real hair. It doesn't make sense to tug.:look:

You have never been weaved check
Not since I BC'd (2 years this Saturday YEAHHHHHHH). Everyone around me, like at work and family/friends, know its mine because they seen it get longer over time.

But you know what...I have been told that I am mean looking that I always have "The Face" on. So strangers are probably scarred of me or scarred to ask me if its real. People stare at it and say "oh your hair is so pretty". I never had a stranger just touch my hair or ask if it was fake.

ETA: You know that's a lie...my Aunt asked me if this was all my hair like last year when I was like APL kinda almost BSL. But I have never had someone just walk up to me and dig their finger tips in my hair. I would shank a b!tc... *pats mouth* *looks* you know what I mean!

wow...............

:nono: Not in a million years....if I can't ask the person (which, if they are a stranger, I'm not doing anyway), then I just will have to be okay with the uncertainty. I can't imagine the whole "just HAVE to know" position.

wow...............

 It was such an awkward moment. I was whispering to my SO... "she just pulled my HAY-AR!" And he was all like, "huh? :dork:" The whole thing was like a Twilight Zone segment and nobody really knew about it but she and I. Weird lady. :nono:

^^^ teaser tell us!!! ;)

:giggle: Lets just say that I ended up being held back by two of my male classmates cuz I definitely got in her face about it...she had a weave in and I said "Look B**** this isn't gonna come out of my scalp like yours will!". She pulled it really hard to the point where my neck snatched back! There are no hard feelings though...we are friends now :yep:

well, i'm not at that point yet. A weave check??? girl, that's one of my hair fantasies..:)

After shaving my whole head... i think i can recall only one BALD check...2 years ago. it was just a fast swipe across the back of my head.. before i could blink, the "perp" was already moving quickly away from me.

Folks thought i was a cancer patient after losing all of my hair to stress, "stretching relaxers" and Nioxin...

It's great when you absolutely have no hair... No one walks up to you, rubs your head and asks: "Is that your scalp?"
