On my natural hair if I relax my edges? I just want a smoother looking bun. I don't mind the rest of my hair being coarse I just like smooth edges. NOTHING and I do mean NOTHING lays my edges down.

trust me..there is something out there to lay down your hair..what all have you tried? eco made me a believer.

yes you are cheating, first it's the edges then................you know the rest lmao!

but seriously it's cheating, try the scarf and gel method, or hicks smooth edges or something that smoothes the edges.

It's only cheating if you and you're natural hair are in a monogamous relationship. If you all have an open relationship then go for it. But don't get made if your natural hair breaks up with your relaxed hair at the line of demarcation!!! :look:

I did that twice before deciding to completely transition, and I wish I hadn't. I was doing a "halo" b/c of wanting slick edges. Now the rest of my hair has slightly more natural NG than the edges. So I am sure that when I BC, I'll still have some relaxed around the edges b/c about an inch around the edges was relaxed for two extra months!

I found Garnier Fructis Wax and my edges have never been smoother, even when relaxed!

UGH!!! I wanted you guys to say "yeah go for it" SO BAD. I have tried that Lustrasilk Slick Stick (it's like wax), Hairveda Pur Whipped Gel, Eco-Style Gel, Castor Oil, S-Curl Texturizer Gel and laid my scarf on immediately. By mid morning, my rough edges are crawling back up looking crazy. Any other suggestions please?

I am a fine but very DENSE 3c/4a and when i want my edges to lay down, i do it on wet hair. Take some holding gel, brush it threw with a boar bristle brush, and immediately tie a scarf on my head..BUT when i do put on the scarf i put it on around my forehead(tightly) then slide it back to right before my hair line. Also try a tooth brush.

OH btw you are not a natural if you treat your edges with a chemical that changes your hair texture//curl pattern. But i dont think there is anything wrong with doing so, i actually never imagine someone doing that lol!

The green Fantasia Gel works, old school brown gel, and yesterday someone was saying that grease works. Are you using a scarf to hold the edges down after you apply XXXXX?

ETA: a small toothbrush really does wonders.

Thanks pearlycurly. Maybe I need to stop towel drying my hair then applying products, I should apply them when my hair is wet.

Yes after I apply 1000 products. Maybe you are right. I might have to go back to the old faithful brown gel and mix it with some castor oil or grease.

Ooh I remember tooth brushes!! I just need something that will keep that unruly hair in place all day. Slick and shiny and under control.

Another thing I do to is that on a non wash day when I am looking for neat edges, I spray with Aussie Hair insurance and then apply Gel.

One other tip, Dlewis does vaseline under gel for hold.

That's a good idea!

Is Aussie sold at Target? Lemme google it.

oh pleaseee, relax your edges if you want tooo, who the hell cares if its cheating or not cheating, as long as your happy with how YOUR hair looks.

I was gonna do that during my transition, but i was worried that i might not neutralize properly and my edges will drop out. Let me know what you decide to do.

if you do it please post pics. i've never seen relaxed straight edges and kinky, natural, type 4 hair styled together.

In the last few days - I have done a few things.
First I used Hicks Edges. I love that stuff. To keep it smooth...I have sprayed aloe juice ( with honeyquat) on, brushed down and slicked the rest down with regular old lotion and coconut oil.... Tie down overnight- and voila! smoothness!

Small brushes are ( toothbrushes are just wonderful for edges. I have yet to find anything but glue keeping the greys down :giggle: - but. for the most part, my hair stays behaved.

I don't think it would look right, because once it starts to grow, you'll have new growth coming in behind the straight hair. Then you'll relax your edges again and at that point, you'll have 2 inches of straight hair and the rest kinky...that would be a mess.

Plus, like someone else said, unless you only plan to do this once, you'll eventually have a head full of relaxed hair on the outer rims.

I'm relaxed and gel doesn't work that well for me. Old school brown gel or hair grease (they have natural hair greases and as long as you re-wet the gel, it's not damaging).

I do know some people who did the edges thing while wearing weaves, though. They weren't naturals.

My suggestion: Start embracing the fact that you have afro-textured hair, that the edges wont be completely slick, and that its perfectly fine and beautiful to have coarse/curly/kinky edges.

And carry a brush with you for touch ups.

I say go for it if that's really what you want. Remember this is your hair so you can make any choice you want. I mean you won't be 100% natural anymore, but who cares. I did it before when my hair was short and I needed my roots tamed. I eventually cut those ends off once my hair was long again. I just made sure I took good care of the two textures as you would if you were stretching. I also didn't do it very often so it blended and I didn't have overly straight hair. Like Adora said (I love her for her honesty!) who the heck cares about who gonna say what about you cheating. Do what makes you happy! HTH!
