Unbelievable 4b Natural that actually has defined curls

I dunno. This vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4mf-nwn9lE made me see why she would call herself a 4a/4b. She's multi textured like a lot of people. I don't think it's as coarse as she thinks it is but she could easily be a fine haired 4a/b.

Exactly! I thought the only difference between a 3c,4a,4b was the diameter of the curl. I remember someone on the board posting that that it goes: 3c=sharpie to pencil 4a=pencil to pen spring 4b=penspring and smaller (but still a very small spiral)...it was something like that. Someone correct me if I'm off.

I agree. I think it makes more sense to describe the characteristics of the hair w/various adjectives because lots of people's hair doesn't fit into the box of the typing system.

yep i understand what you are saying. most of my hair is 3c very defined coils. when stretched the just look like stretched coils, not zig zags. other parts of my hair are zig zag on there own, they are not coils in any way shape or form. if you look at them they are big flat zig zags, very different than coils. and they are very elongated. while the coils shrink up to half the size of the zig zag.

on to the video, i dont know her hair type but i would say she was a 4a. i didnt think 4b could get definition like that no matter what they used in their hair.

I think what you are all forgetting is that how your eyes perceive things depending on the size of the object being perceived matters.

For example, no one can deny that a slinky is a coil...or that it still looks like a stretched coil when stretched:

Part of why you see the coils clearly is because the size of the coil makes it pretty hard to see just the profile. You almost can't help seeing the circular cross-section of the slinky with a slight shift of your eyes. And the size of the coils makes the curves clear to see when you stretch it so that it appears like a wave even if we were able to see just the profile.

But let's look at a slinky from afar:

In the middle part where it is most stretched out, we see a zigzag shape. Why don't we see the curves that make it clear it is a stretched coil? Coz it's so small from our point of view that even with a shift of our eyes, it's hard to see the cross-section of the slinky because of how small the coils are; also the size of the curves of the wave are so tiny, they appear pointed/sharp to our eyes. So instead of seeing waves, we see zigzag.

Same difference between type 3 hair and type 4 hair.

seems like she keeps on talking about gel gel and gel I MIGHT BE WRONG but Ive never heard her talk about deep conditioning... moisture makes a huge difference in your hair manageability and curl definition!!

WOw, My hair inspiration.

I just watched the first video and I didn't like how she described her hair (rough...bush...etc). I like the end result of the style but I'm wondering about the brush she used. It looks like it would be somewhat damaging. I would be afraid of getting midshaft splits.

I always hear naturals describe their hair as cottony.

I think she wears her hair both ways but she reports more hair retention with low manipulation(meaning after styling it). In one of the videos she said she started to do this because of SSks and decreased hair retention.

She reports 3 hours to do her hair along with detangling,washing, conditioning and styling. Some naturals report 4 hours just to detangle.She wears her like this for a week. So thats not so bad for a style that lasts a week.

I just wonder how she ever came up with this meaning that brush to help define her curls. I've never seen any other 4b use a brush like this to define curls. Any other 4bs try this approach or a modified version of this to define curls?

I dont know her to comment on her psychological state.

i agree platinum. i haven't used that kind of brush since i found the hairboards in 08. i can still here the snap crackle and pop from when i used to brush with that thing. i'm scared of it now. ♥

Since going natural I've NEVER tried to purposely define my curls/coils, cuz I feel like it would be too much effort and I'm more of a big afro kinda girl anyway.

But to cosign an earlier post, I notice the most coil definition when my hair is well moisturized (co-washes, DC and seals). No extra product needed.

2008 was the year I discovered that finger-combing only in the shower keeps my coils defined purely by accident. I use gel over oil to keep the SSK to a minimum.

i don't get it...if a Caucasian woman with type 1a hair was putting small rollers in her hair and saying things like "my hair is so stringy stringy stringy and lifeless" and it took her a long time, would you guys still be saying it's wrong? i mean, the girl likes curls, then the girl likes curls. nothing wrong with that. i know a girl who has probably type 3 hair and she always wears a 4b afro wig cause she doesn't like her natural curl patter. so what? if she doesn't like the she doesn't. lots of people do stuff to get to where they wanna be; for example dye their hair color. i don't see the big deal.
also i don't see the difference from her and people who use texturizers or bkt'ers , same results different methods. IMHO
i think the issue here is that people already have it in their minds that there's a "hair hierarchy" (whether they agree with it or not we know lots of people think this way, maybe not on this board but in rl) so if somebody with a hair type from the "lower hierarchy" wants to achieve hair that looks like hair from the "higher hierarchy" then it's wrong (everybody loves and underdog) but if somebody form a "hair hierarchy" was taking a long time to achieve a look from so called "lower hair hierarchy" then people don't pay too much attention to it

also read well pls i am not saying i think 4b is the lower hierarchy but we all know LOTS of people think this was hence the whole good hair theory

i was just about to post this video because here, we see her hair in its natural state and it looks like 4a/b (but mostly 4b) hair to me. 4b hair IS coily. nonie and sera have shown us this so i'm not sure why people keep saying that it has no pattern.
