Unbelievable 4b Natural that actually has defined curls

After rinsing off the conditioner, my 4B coils began to return to their "equilibrium state" where they no longer look wavy. They still have the weight of water on them which isn't as heavy as conditioner so no obvious stretch here, but as my hair fully dries, it'll shrink even more and look like contracted pen springs:

Exactly! I thought the only difference between a 3c,4a,4b was the diameter of the curl. I remember someone on the board posting that that it goes: 3c=sharpie to pencil 4a=pencil to pen spring 4b=penspring and smaller (but still a very small spiral)...it was something like that. Someone correct me if I'm off.

I agree 100%!!
I dont know why some ppl make it so scientific & complicated:rolleyes: To me what you said in your post "3c=sharpie to pencil 4a=pencil to pen spring 4b=penspring and smaller " is the easiest way to explain hair typing!!!

Plus i believe the girl in the first video has a splash of 3c but she is mostly 4a! I also believe Sera is a true 4B IMHO, and if you compare the two ladies their hair looks nothing alike:look:

I think some people get confused about texture vs. pattern. They see someone with cottony, coarse, dense hair and automatically think that person has to be a type 4, even if their curl size is clearly of the 3 variety... I see alot of "4a's" on the boards that look like cottony 3c to me and a truck load of "3c's" that I think are silky, or even fine haired, 4a's.

I remember watching this video a while back and that brush she's using still gives me chills. The only thing I'm willing to spend 3 hours on is a protective style.

hmm, she keeps saying how much she loves her natural hair journey but the way she describes her natural hair, it seems as if she doesnt like it at all :nono:

Her hair is really pretty, but 3 hours for a wash 'n go type style? Goodness!
I can't believe people spend 3 hours trying to get curly hair. Might as well relax, still spending hella time trying to get your hair to do something it doesn't do on its own. :look:

And that's why just looking at curl SIZE is not enough. In order to figure out the products that worked for ME, I had to take into account texture and pattern.

I thought 4b didn't have a uniform curl pattern? It's just random separate coils - as in it does'nt clump. This person is not a 4b. They may think they are because their hair is "coarse" to the touch but any hair type can be coarse.

I know right. Other than twisting and straightening, anything that takes longer than 5-7 minutes is too long for me, lol. Better slap some gel in, do a couple of rakes with the finger, and go.

I just wanted to add, her latest video really made me sad. I dunno, maybe I'm hormonal or something. There is nothing wrong with "her texture".

Ditto. That video sealed the deal. I was trying to give her the benefit of the doubt after watching the video in the OP but it's quite obvious from this most recent one that she has a complex.

I don't even think there's anything wrong with the amount of time it takes for her to achieve the style bc it takes just as long to do twists, braids and other styles. Unfortunately, for her it seems like this isn't "just another style", it's a way to perpetrate the texture that she really wants. :( Only furthering her complex. And I think she's such a beautiful woman too.

It upset me too. It's messed up that she thinks all you can do with 4b hair is braids and extensions. She's on youtube and youtube is overflowing with 4bs and their million trillion different hair styles.

I saw this YT a while ago, but I am just cosigning with Nonie about 4b textured hair.

All kinky hair consists of curls and coils. A curls make coils. Coils make kink.

Big or little--it is the same principle. The problem is that most 4b hair is SOO dry that the coils/curls are never really seen. And with manipulation, the curls are disturbed or matted.

I thought it was a bit loopy to mention like 3 times what 3c/4a hair can do and 4b cant....like the same thing....over and over again....

Her choice of words used to describe her hair is unfortunate. She definitely has a complex. I think her hair is BEAUTIFUL and I would KILL for her thickness.

All the varying opinions on the differences between 3 and 4 and A and B is the reason I don't classify my hair - too confusing.

I like her hair, but I did not appreciate all the negative comments about her natural hair in its natural state pre-curls.

...And I agree!!! I try not to type myself, but it seems like people use this a lot...

Type 4 hair denotes that it doesn't have a pattern. Many people are quick to call themselves type 4 because their hair is very dense.

I think that girl is 3C.

Hmm...when I was younger and my hair was natural, my aunt used to take grease and water to define my hair curls all over. I guess that means I'm not a type-4...I should change my siggy.

She has beautiful hair and doesn't seem to appreciate it as much as she should, unless it's manipulated. And this hair typing thing is way too confusing. *sigh*

Nonie ITU where you are coming from. The point I am trying to make however is that Sera's "curls" look more zig-zaggy to the eye precisely bc they are more stretched and elongated as opposed to tightly spiralled in the case of 4a's like the lady in OP's post. This I know bc I have looked at my own hairs close up and this is what I can see with my naked eyes. Some of my hairs without a doubt are more tightly curled into a spiral whilst others are more randomly zig zag curled. At the end of the day IMO there are different types of curly just as there are different types of straight (poker & kinky) and wavy (loose waves, loose curls).

Anyway on that note, both ladies have beautiful hair IMO. This is the beauty and diversity of hair.
yep i understand what you are saying. most of my hair is 3c very defined coils. when stretched the just look like stretched coils, not zig zags. other parts of my hair are zig zag on there own, they are not coils in any way shape or form. if you look at them they are big flat zig zags, very different than coils. and they are very elongated. while the coils shrink up to half the size of the zig zag.

on to the video, i dont know her hair type but i would say she was a 4a. i didnt think 4b could get definition like that no matter what they used in their hair.

i have not watch the full video of any of the ones shown but the little bit i did watch had me like:perplexed
why would you brush and brush and brush(her words) your hair to make it do something that it doesnt do naturally??? i can see once in a while(i get the feeling she does this often) for a different look. but thats too much brushing IMO. it seems like after a while the brushing would loosen your texture kinda like training it. i know when i kept wearing my hair in a puff when i first went natural it trained my hair to grow straighter in the front and it wouldnt fall forward.

thank you. i spend maybe 2 hours on my twists, maybe more if im taking breaks. but regular everyday styling is hella simple and not time consuming at all. even for a wahs and go i just rake product through my hair in one big section or ill do four sections. and even that takes maybe 5 minutes. i refuse to "make" my hair do anything.
isnt that how i ended up with all hte heat damage in the front of my hair even though i use TWO heat protectants everytime.
