Long Hair Festival in Hilo, HI!

LOL, well not really a long hair festival, but if you need hair porn, the DVD is 8 hours of sheer heaven.

I don't know if anyone here is familiar with hula, but every year Hilo, HI has the "Hula Superbowl" (real name: Merrie Monarch Festival), where the best Hula groups compete for the stop spot. Now long hair for women is a part of the hula tradition. In fact, some schools forbid their members to ever cut their hair. I know the being Pacific Islander and Asian makes it a lot easier to grown long luxurious hair, but we can dream can't we? Girls, I've never seen so many long haired women in my life! Uggg. So. Jealous. I thought you would enjoy:

Ha, you know one dancer did that! Actually the biggest dancer I ever saw (Snowbird Bento) competed topless with a lei one year. I heard it was awesome, but obviously they can't put it on YouTube.

I hate missionaries. They ruin all the fun!

I think so too. A humid summer is great for my hair. Even though lots of those groups are actually based in California.

Hawaii was the BEST for my hair. I loved every single year being there. Got to Cali and Oh MY!!!

The Festival is the best. My favorite dance is someone doing Pele. Wooooo!

Hawaii made my skin greasy as a bucket of fried chicken. DH who usually has oily skin that often breaks out... his skin was clear and perfect like a friggin Proactiv Solution commercial

The weather is great for spiders and 8 inch long centipedes too. Everything has its price.

Miss Aloha Hula 2006 has my goal length. Seeing her hair is my motivation today to do a protein treatment and DC. a sista has got goals!

My skin was flawless there too. I never worried about dry skin either.

You are right the bugs were interesting and it took me years to have a successful peace treaty with the gekos. But there is always something anywhere you live in the world.

The hair on these women brought back lots of memories. Some of the prettiest women in the world.

I really wanted to post another school (Kaumakaua) but all their vids have been pulled on Youtube. They are also famous for not cutting their hair (except for 2009 when for some reason it was short).

I wonder how tall these ladies are. I like to admire hair, but it's not fair for me to be jealous of a woman who is short or has a short chest, torso, or neck. My torso and neck are both long and I'm 5'6" so it's a different game for me. My goal length is the bottom of my bra cup.

Shoot we should have an online halau. Gotta grown that hair to join! LOL!

Oh, gosh, that would be madness. I don't travel to tropical places because my medicine makes me extremely heat sensitive and I tend to swell like a balloon, burn, and suffer dizzy spells. So obviously Hawaiian vacations are not an option for me. Do most Hawaiian women keep their hair super long?

You'd be surprised. It's not NEARLY as hot here as people seem to think. You'd be hard pressed to find a more suitable climate for the human body. Think of the nicest day (weather wise) you've ever experienced. Not too hot, not too cold, with a gentle breeze flowing. That's a normal day here. It is absolutely PERFECT.

As for the hair, most of my "Auntys" have long hair, but they keep it mostly bunned, or clipped up. It's way too breezy to be worn down, I imagine it'd be a task trying to keep it out of the way.

Well what's nice for most is usually really hot for me. I've overheated at 80F in the shade while wearing a billowy top and shorts. It's ok though. I'm not really an island type of girl.

I wonder how often these hula sisters let their hair down. I'm just realizing when I see practice pics of them they are wearing it up, which I find interesting. I know Bernice (the soloist) must almost never wear it down. Thigh length? Oh my!

If I can recall, I think that the men were the original Hula dancers. Here's a video of the 2009 winners!

And yes, beautiful hair....but one girl stood out because her hair was shorter and very light in color, lol.

I so agree. And sometimes (okay, often) I wish I lived there. The days are just PERFECT! I have a dry skin condition and when growing up my Doctor used to tell my parents that I should live in Hawaii. I never went until I was an adult and wow was he right. When I'm there, my skin and my hair feel so great, no matter what time of year it is.

Oh and when I first looked at this thread title I was hoping it was for a Long Hair CARE FORUM festival in Hawaii. Let's go ladies!

Ahem, but yes you're right. Men did all the hula for a long time. I think one of the kings that really loved the dance expanded the rules so that women could participate. I read on a website that they could only dance the seated hula for a long time. Not sure if that's correct or if that's just another missionary rule. Anyway one group did seated hula and some of the women were actually sitting on their hair when they raised up and sat back down. Amazing.
