Is anyone still using monistat?

Today I washed with NIZORAL again. Several times during the week, probably three, I used a combo of MN, cayenne pepper and OJON leave in conditioner spray. It thickened enough to use a color brush to apply it.

I am happy to report I had no flakes nor itchies during the week. NOTHING!!! I think I'm going to try to go a week and a half or two weeks without washing and seeing if there are any flakes or itchies. I'll be sure to post here.

Ladies, I am checking in again.

I've had 5 days flake free and itch free. I can not believe this is working so quickly!

When I used Nizoral alone in the past, some weeks would be better than other weeks in terms of remaining flake free and itch free. I'd just have less flakes most of the time, but, I still had to wash weekly.

The combo of Nizoral and MN has been outstanding. I really do think I can make it for another 5 days to mark my week and a half. That would never EVER be possible when I stopped using Nizoral. If I went 2 weeks I'd feel like I had cradle cap. If I touched my hair, there'd be flakes falling.

Adding the MN a couple times a week is a definite asset to a Nizoral poo.

I'll post back to keep the thread informed of my findings at a week and a half.

Hihi,

I'm checking in at a week and a half. I still don't have any flakes and a very few itchies. I am sold!

I noticed my scalp was kinda greasy yesterday, but once I used my Denman to brush from root to tip, it felt a lot better. I have used my MN mix twice since my last post. I did have to modify the ingredients as I ran out of the Ojon Leave in Spray, I simply used another leave in conditioner, MN, cayenne pepper, peppermint essential oil and a few drops of castor oil.

I think I'm going to go for 2 weeks--I haven't gone 2 weeks without washing my hair since the early 90's as a pre-teen. 10 days is usually all I can stand b/c of the dandruf. For years, I've washed once per week.

I'm there too, that one seems like it's more focused on MN as a growth aid.

I thought if anyone searched, for MN and dandruff, my whole account is in this thread, and makes for easy searching.

I do not think combining anti-fungals is a good idea. What is the purpose of combining them again? If you have not consulted a dermatologist, why not select just one?

"If you use topical products too often, your condition may become worse."

^^Do you have any experience with this happening?

Here is the article she references:
Nizoral Shampoo
Generic Name: Ketoconazole (kee-toe-KOE-na-zole)
Brand Name: Nizoral

Nizoral Shampoo is used for:
Treating tinea (pityriasis) versicolor. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Nizoral Shampoo is an imidazole antifungal. It works by killing sensitive fungi by interfering with the formation of the fungal cell membrane and weakening it. The weakened cell membrane allows the cell contents to leak out and results in the death of the fungus.

Do NOT use Nizoral Shampoo if:
you are allergic to any ingredient in Nizoral Shampoo
Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Nizoral Shampoo:
Some medical conditions may interact with Nizoral Shampoo. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
if you have low blood sugar levels, liver disease, or porphyria (a blood disease), sulfite sensitivity, or you drink more than 3 alcohol-containing drinks a day
Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Nizoral Shampoo. Because little, if any, of Nizoral Shampoo is absorbed into the blood, the risk of it interacting with another medicine is low.

Ask your health care provider if Nizoral Shampoo may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Nizoral Shampoo:
Use Nizoral Shampoo as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

Moisten hair and scalp with water. Apply enough shampoo to wash your scalp and hair. Gently massage the entire scalp, leaving the shampoo on for about 5 minutes. Rinse thoroughly, then dry your hair as you normally do.
Keep Nizoral Shampoo out of your eyes, nose, and mouth. If this occurs, wash with water and contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.
If you miss a dose of Nizoral Shampoo, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.
Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Nizoral Shampoo.

Important safety information:
Be sure to use Nizoral Shampoo for the full course of treatment. If you do not, the medicine may not clear up your infection completely. The bacteria could also become less sensitive to this or other medicines. This could make the infection harder to treat in the future.
If you use topical products too often, your condition may become worse.
If your symptoms do not improve or if they become worse, check with your doctor.
Some of these products contain sulfites. Sulfites may cause an allergic reaction in some patients (eg, asthma patients). If you have ever had an allergic reaction to sulfites, ask your pharmacist if your product has sulfites in it.
Talk to your doctor before you take Nizoral Shampoo if you drink more than 3 drinks with alcohol per day.
Using Nizoral Shampoo on hair that has been permanently waved may cause a loss of the curl.
Nizoral Shampoo should be used with extreme caution in CHILDREN; safety and effectiveness in children have not been confirmed.
PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Nizoral Shampoo while you are pregnant. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you use Nizoral Shampoo, check with your doctor. Discuss any possible risks to your baby.
Possible side effects of Nizoral Shampoo:
All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Itching; mild irritation or stinging.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:
Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); reddening, blistering, peeling, itching, or burning of your skin.

This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur. If you have questions about side effects, contact your health care provider. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088. You may also report side effects at http://www.fda.gov/medwatch.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:
Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center (http://www.aapcc.org), or emergency room immediately.

Proper storage of Nizoral Shampoo:
Store Nizoral Shampoo between 59 and 77 degrees F (15 and 25 degrees C). Store in a tightly closed container. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Nizoral Shampoo out of the reach of children and away from pets.

General information:
If you have any questions about Nizoral Shampoo, please talk with your doctor, pharmacist, or other health care provider.
Nizoral Shampoo is to be used only by the patient for whom it is prescribed. Do not share it with other people.
If your symptoms do not improve or if they become worse, check with your doctor.

@ cyd...too much of anything on my scalp for too long makes my seborrheic flare up. Also, I prefer Nizoral because I can rinse it off of my hair. Combining sulfur prods, monistat, leave-ins, etc. makes me itch just thinking about it. You know what they say, too much of a good thing can be bad. I have never used monistat, I try to avoid extras on my scalp because the build up is counter productive (clogged follicles -> flare up-> treat-> repeat. I have only used Nizoral as prescribed by my derm. They did prescribe another topical (rinse after 1 hour) but I stopped using it because it thins the scalp.

Nizoral has been reported to extend the anagen phase. I am not too sure about growth rate. I rarely use Nizoral because I hate SLS, but if I was going to use a topical anti-fungal I would never leave it on my scalp for an extended period. People don't keep applying it after the yeast clears (where the med was intended), right?

Could you just use tea tree oil instead?
I've started on mn and still experience an itchy scalp. I tried mixing it with JBCO..still itchy. Then i tried mn, tea tree cream and jbco..still itching. Sulfer 8 doesn't work and it stinks! I'm desperate for a solution...other than the derm
TIA

Interesting.

Well, as I detailed my experience has been completely different. Thanks for sharing your thoughts/experiences.

yes. I'm pretty sure I'm getting some good results. Maybe I can ditch this MTG once I've finished the bottle. Not that the results weren't great, but MN offers the same results minus the smell.
