Have you ever experienced a scissor happy or jealous MALE stylist?

My hair is lacking "shape" right now so I've decided I'm going to have to cut some shape into it. My mom suggested that I avoid a female stylist at all costs :lachen:. I won't get into the specific convo because I don't feel like debating the validity of her opinions lol, but I'm just curious. IYO, have men been less likely to over do it with the scissors when cutting/trimming/styling etc? TIA
 
Mom is right. I don't go to Female stylists for that same reason. I have not encountered one male that was scissor happy.

I no longer go to salons, but I posted my experience from when I did. Maybe not all are this way, and perhaps you can find a good one that is not, best of luck.
 
I have only had 1 male stylist before and he was great. He loved to see "his girls" (that is what he called his clients) with long flowing hair. He also understood that we were his walking billboards. I cant tell you how many times people used to ask me where I got my hair done and I would just give them one of his cards. I dont think a male stylist can be jealous of a females hair but I can be wrong. Scissor happy? I dont think so either. Most men love for a woman to have long healthy hair it is the epitomy of femininity.
 
Your mom is 100% correct. My former stylist cut the right amount every time and knew what it mean to just do a dusting! I was spoiled...he was really good!
 
Laugh if you want but I get my hair cut at the barbershop exclusively because:

(1) there's no women acting ugly there....matter of fact the only women I see in there either have fades or hair that is apl or longer, nothing in between

(2) they know how to measure....if i tell them 1/4 inch then they take off 1/4 inch
(3) they r fast.... i'm in and out in about 1/2 hr cause the guys will usually let u cut in front of them....i guess chivalry is not dead lol
(4) they r cheap....a trim costs me about 10 bucks
 
i HAVE had a scissor happy, MALE stylist!! i'd ask for a trim and come out 1-2 (or more) inches shorter! he told a friend of mine to "shut up, he knows what's best for her hair and she's gonna be amazed with the results." she was sooo ticked when she left there with her just below APL hair cut into a just below nape of neck length bob.

so YES - there ARE scissor happy MEN out there! arrogant ones! :)

The above is true but, I haven't met one yet. IME they tend to do as you ask and are hesitant to cut large amounts of hair off.
 
I have had a scissor happy male stylist but it had nothing to do with jealousy. It was more arrogance and his wanting to show off his skills.
 
Just once. It was at Joseph's Salon in Manhattan, a well-known black owned salon. One of the stylists cut about 3.5 inches when I asked for a trim. He seemed aloof, unfriendly and made a point of posting a BIG picture of his bi-racial daughter on the mirror. Now in my experience gay male hairdressers are the best and LEAST likely to be scissorhappy. They seem to want your hair long just like you do. But a STRAIGHT male hairdresser, (and again this is only in my experience) sometimes seem to be the same as some black female stylists. They have that same sort of judgemental disrespect for our hair. The guy I was talking about first, seemed to me the type that you sometimes run into that would never date a black woman and views white women as "the prize". He had NO remorse whatsoever at my disappointed and shocked expression at the above shoulder length haircut I just received. This was in the days before I understood my hair, so this would not happen again.

I hope I haven't offended anyone, but I think you are better off with a male hairdresser in general. Stay away from female, the jealousy factor is just too large.

I like the idea of going to a barbershop for this. I would've never thought too either! But a trim is a basic skill, so no reason why they shouldn't be able to. :yep:
 
Thanks ladies!!! Based on the responses so far, it sounds like a scissor happy mail stylist is not the norm. It may happen, but less likely to happen than with women.

I never considered the gay vs. straight male dichotomy though.

Regarding the arrogance, I know exaaaaaactly what you ladies mean. Some of my gay homeboys are catty and arrogant about things. I made a suggestion one time for grammatical changes to a press release for a company, and he responded "keep in mind, this is a press release, not an advertisement." WTF did that have to do with anything. I'm not even in the Business of PR, but it doesn't take a genius to figure out that his sentence made no sense. :lachen:

At any rate, I know what you ladies mean. I will definitely have to consider that. You can't tell some men, especially gay men, anything!
 
OP some people go to Supercuts and have good results. I haven't personally gone, but Ive heard that they only trim what you ask them to trim.
 
^^^ Thanks BM! I want some shape cut into my hair too though. Is Supercuts good for cuts too?

I was just about to suggest this. Most women say that they'll show you exactly what they're going to trim so that there won't be any surprises.

Oh YES many years ago. I had hair a little bit past my shoulders and I ended up leaving with a SHORT bob just before my trip to NY! I was HEATED! I remember watching this dude last week cutting another man's hair and he kept cutting and cutting and finally the client said "uhhh I don't want to leave with a bald head." LOL
 
I had the same issue with two male stylists that I've used. Once, I got bangs cut that were in the middle of my forehead! It was horrible.

:lachen::lachen: Actually, it wasn't my idea... I met a tail bone length black woman in the beauty supply and she was the one that turned me on to her barber. Matter of fact the poor man looks ill sometimes when I ask for a trim...like it physically hurts him to cut it. He's old school...about 55 and i'm gonna be extremely sad when he retires in a few years.
 
I've had two male stylists do my hair. One was wonderful - he introduced me to Phyto and Bigen. He has a large following now and is doing well.

The other one was lazy and blowfried and flat-ironed my hair even though I asked for a roller-wrap. I don't think he knew how to rollerset :ohwell:.

Both experiences were before my HHJ began. Neither was scissor-happy, but the "good" stylist did cut my hair quite a bit. It was a good cut and I was fine with short hair back then.

ETA: I actually had a third yt male stylist trim my hair at SuperCuts recently. He did a great job of listening to my needs.

I've been to two male stylists and the first one destroyed my hair and hacked it up all the while telling me how horrible natural hair was. I was not totally in love with my hair and so allowed him to abuse me and my hair. The second was better but he needed more experience. I now only get my hair cut at Supercuts because the ladies there are precise! They depend on tips so they want you happy.
