:look: OK this is my very first thread (I think) so go easy on me. I have been wearing a wig as a protective style for the past 2 months. I'm doing it really because its cold here and I didn't want my damp hair exposed or rubbing up against my collar or inside hats. I keep my hair cornrowed underneath my lacefront wig. I deep condition at least once a week. I moisturize and seal with something twice a day. I've also started baggying within the past week since I've found a way to wear the plastic cap under my wig. Here is my concern. When I remove my cornrows after 4 weeks - after the takedown, the wash, deep condition, detangling and rebraiding - it appears that I have lost just as much hair as I would have doing it at least once a week. :wallbash: Can my hair really shed that much when I'm protecting it? I'll post a picture when I get home. Is this normal or am I doing something wrong? I'm fully natural (mostly 4a with tight coils).

When you take down braids, weave etc from having them for weeks. It will always appear that you have lost a lot of hair as your seeing it all at one time. On average a woman can lose between 50-75 hairs a day. Multiply that times the # of days you had braids.

If your taking down braids, washing, etc and the same day rebraiding you may want to try waiting in between to give your hair/scalp a break.

Protecting your hair will not prevent shedding. Shedding is normal and a vital part of your growth cycle. You will shed 50-100 hairs a day on average so yes after 2 weeks you will have 14days of shed hair x <your shed rate>.

Make sure the hair you are losing is shedding and not breakage by checking for white bulbs on the ends. If there is no breakage or very little breakage then you have nothing to worry about.

NO it is NOT normal! I had the same problem I posted about before! What I found cut down my hair loss by about 80% was washing and detangling my hair in sections

You likely cut down on breakage, which is not normal.

I agree. Shedding is normal and different people shed different amounts. After a month in braids you should expect to shed a good amount of the hair thats been bound in braids.
