And I don't think that there is any way to acknowledge BHM in a store without cheapening it. I mean, they are using it for marketing purposes! They are hoping we buy more to fund a most likely white-owned company - I mean, really, using the holiday as a marketing tool is what cheapens it, not what they are marketing.
How about a banner at the entrance of the store saying "Celebrate Black History Month"?
It could be done more tactfully if they wanted to.
And I think that's what irks me in general. In my opinion, it's probably just to walk away unless they are items that are actually used to celebrate the month. For example, displays on educational items geared towards Black history. Or sales/displays on movies like Malcolm X, Roots, etc.
And ideas like this is why I'll never work in marketing.
are you going to ask them if they get upset when they see that stuff on sale?
And then, I'd suspect that another contingent of black people will complain that the store is 'downplaying' black history month - "Why do the Latinos get discounts on their products for Cinco De Mayo?!? We have a whole month celebrating our history, and nothing is on sale?! WTH?"![]()
Either they use it as marketing, or they don't. And if they don't for us, and do for others - well.........
And really, aserplexed as people might get over this, does anyone actually plan on never stepping foot in a Kroger, again?

........ I dunno. I think it's a fine line to walk. I'm sure they could walk it in a way that would piss no-one off, but I think race relations - period - in this country is such a volatile issue - there's no real way to make everyone happy.... is there?True enough. My DH asked me if I was going to boycott Kroger now. I was surprised that he asked that and replied that the thought hadn't even occurred to me.
I'm more a combination of amazed/amused/disappointed than enraged. If I were enraged, you can best believe that I'd be boycotting.

Right? Because how much profit would you make on those - compared to boxes of relaxer and hair gel?
I mean, once you own one copy of Malcom X, and one copy of Roots, you aren't going to buy a new one every year, are you?
However, a significant portion of their clientele might need a touch-up during the month of February.
Or need another thing of hair gel - and they'll 'appreciate' the advertisement with a pretty black woman on it acknowledging that it is Black History month - and look, it's on sale!
Kroger made money, they made most of their clientele happy, and the unhappy ones are still going to keep shopping there, anyway. :dollar:
You have to follow the money - and we are the ones spending it.

I'm not sure what word to use for that display... just plain ignorant?
...Grocery stores might as well get a "Celebrating Black History Month" display for this item too:
