I heard my sister describing me to a friend of hers, she was in line at the mall, trying to get me to go out into the hall and flag her friend down so they could find each other (tweens excited to be @ the mall @ the same time):look:

Anyways, she said I was brown with a blue jacket and long hair... I thought to myself, LONG hair? Then I thought of Pocahantas and Sylver2 and DLewis and all those countless other hair superstars here on the board... When I 1st started here last year, I was almost APL, and now I'm just at above BSL... which on ME is still not MBL, and when I bump the ends or wear a low pony or a wrap or something, it looks like it's APL all over again to me...

I got to thinkin, what length constitutes a valid description of LONG hair? Don't forget to comment AND vote!!!

obviously, it varies from person to person..but to ME..APL and longer is
also alot of people judge by what they see being the "norm" and anything that exceeds that..is considered long.

At least bra strap to me. Strangely I've seen people call shoulder length long hair and I mean white people lol. I would think that only people who had difficulty growing long hair would call something like shoulder long. At this point I think I actually have "long hair" again as it's almost or is midback,, took me about 10 years to get there after my first relaxer ruination of my hair. If I'd stop tormenting it, maybe I could have what I reallllly perceive as long hair which is waist length and beyond and THICK. Several months ago my hair was WL but so pitifully thin it wasn't truly waist to me... Anyway, people have oddly different perceptions of what long is...

It also depends on the person with the said hair in question. APL can look long on someone and then another person you see with APL look so short. Of course I'm willing to bet even when I get hair that's long standard I will still view it as hella short.

Depends on who you are asking. If you ask me I will say SL doesn't qualify as long hair, but if you ask someone whose never had SL or longer hair and doesn't know anyone with hair past SL then they might say it qualifies as long hair. But I have hair anorexia since discovering hair boards so my opinion doesn't count in real life lol.

To be 100% honest for AA women i think APL or longer.

NON AA women BSL or WL+. I have seen many NON AA's with longer hair then APL, so apl doesnt amaze me on them. But i have seen little AA women with hair longer then SL..of course besides online(hair forums/YT):look: I have yet to meet an AA(w/o dreads) in person with WL hair or HEALTHY BSL hair:sad:

It depends, I see some APL women with fuller lusher hair than some BSL women. So the aesthetics of the hair play an important part too, not just simply the length. As I approach APL it doesn't seem that long to me though. :ohwell:

ITA!!!!!

Full bouncy APL hair does look longer than fine/thinner MBL hair. Fullness plays a huge part and I think we often don't take that into account.

Not all BSL/MBL/WL are created equal.

There are many times I've walked into an "Am I APL?" thread and been like :look: "I guess"....but the hair was so thin it didnt feel like what I imagine APL to be even though technically the poster had made their goal.

And then there have been times I've walked into another thread asking a similar question and been like :yep: "Hell yea you're APL"

only to later take a second look and be like "oh wait - she's not quite there yet but her hair is so full and lush it just looks hella long"

I know I'm not the only one who's experienced this :sekret:

Real talk: my hair isnt as full as I'd like it to be at the moment (working on that) so my goal is waist length. But if it were super thick I'd probably get the look I want at BSL.

Fine haired folks have to grow longer hair for it to really make a statement (IMHO)

My third time posting this little chart that I wrote up :)

Bald to neck/shoulder length = short

Neck/shoulder length to BSL = medium

BSL to waist = medium long

Waist to classic = long

Classic + = extremely long

Long hair is subjective b/c what you think is long hair the other person could think is short. For example, if in all your life your hair was shoulder length and finally grew to apl, you would consider that long but to another person whose hair has been bsb-mbl all their life or recently will think that your apl is short. Everyone's opinion about long hair is going to be different.

For me, Shoulder length would be long, Shoulder length and I were friends for a brief period a few years back, then my hair became busted. I am now at neck length and would be happy for healthy shoulder length hair and have it has my benchmark anything longer than that would be a blessing for me!

I love seeing the ladies on here with such long healthy hair, its a nice target to aim for, HHG ladies!!

Quoted for truth. :yep: Mores the pity *sigh*

I'm going to go with APL ftw! It depends on a lot of things. I used to think SL was long....until I made it to SL...after a few weeks of trying new things, I got bored and figured out my hair wasn't long at all LOL..

So back into the weave it goes.

Of course, being on this board, my opinion has become slightly warped. But going by what I know is what is generally seen as "long" in the real world--I voted APL.

My perception of what is considered long hair has been defined by my mother. My mother is 5' 9.5" tall and at its longest her hair was a relaxed MBL+. When people say I have long hair I hasten to say I don't think so because I will not consider my hair long until I have at least reached a full MBL (btw I am only 5'0").

It used to be Apl to me but the closer I get to it the more I realize it's not all that long anymore. So I say Bsl. But compared to most AA women I see, apl would be considered long since most AA women don't have hair past shoulder length (not on LHCF).

I voted APL. That is considered long by most AA women (not on this board). I do think the fuller and thicker hair is, the longer it looks. A short person with APL hair may appear much longer than a tall person with APL. After BSL I consider hair VERY long.

ok, so i voted mbl because i dont feel like my hair is long until it hit mbl. i think it has to do with where my hair brushes on the back of my arms when its down.

but after reading some of the comments i think i would want to change my vote to apl. because irl i have seen what "i" think as long very rarely and i'm crazy excited to see it lol. but what i would have thought as long before hair boards and when talking to non-hair board members, it would be apl... yeah. so i change my answer please and thank you :D

For myself it is APL because my APL is a BSL on an average height women.

Hope that makes sense.

ETA: my APL is 23" (from hairline to APL) So, y'all see what i mean now??

It kind of depends on the fullness and health. I've seen some APL-BSL hair that looked long on some and not so much on others. But without a doubt and no matter how full it is, anything past WL is long to me.
And for my own hair, as Je Ne Sais Quoi put it....the next level. The joys of hair anorexia.

I voted BSL. I've noticed that people especially men seem to think that anything pass shoulder length is long. For me personally it's full BSB or MBL that I consider long. Because you can actually see the length. My hair is in various lengths from APL - MBL and I consider it longish. When someone says my hair is long I tend to rebuff it. Because I don't feel it's long yet.
