Dancin' on sunshine!
Sorry for putting this thread in the OT section but I figured I would get more responses here. Have you ever been told that your hair doesn't look relaxed? One of my co-workers told me that she thought I was natural and that I just blow dry my hair for it to be straight. Apparently, I must not be leaving the relaxer in long enough :perplexed

isn't there a similar thread to this? the girl was all upset that her friend/coworker thought her hair was natural and straightened, not relaxed.

frankly i think it's a compliment... what she's REALLY saying is your hair isn't thin, overprocessed, fried, full of splits and chewed-up ends. :yep:

yes I have been told this a lot. mainly when I was stretching and also when I was using a moisturizer that made my hair very frizzy. i thought your hair was relaxed.

also what i have noticed with people is with black women, well my friends at least, they believe the hair should be as straight as possible.

so if you even telax a little your hair aint good enough.

Is your hair relaxed bone straight or texlaxed? You know most people have that mindset that the hair has to be relaxed as straight as possible. I wouldn't worry about it. Your hair is lovely.

I have heard that many times. I take it as a compliment because that means they can see my new growth when I slick my hair back and I got those nice big waves..I love it. Now if I just got a relaxer and someone said that..I'd be kind of pissed. :perplexed

actually i feel the opposite. i, like someone else, think its a compliment. i dont like bone str8 relaxed hair. to me it doesnt look natural, no pun intended:look:. i do like to have a bit of texture to my hair and not an artifical looking texture.

Thanks ladies. I did just get a relaxer almost three weeks ago :look: I don't think my hair has ever been blown straight. I have poofy hair, LOL

exactly. your hair is gorgeous and very healthy looking!:yep: i would take what she said with a grain of salt.

I am asked that question also. I used to be offended but now I think of it as a compliment:grin:

Sometimes I get a surprised reaction when I mention my hair is relaxed. A lot of times people assume it is texturized. I fully relax my hair, but it doesn't make it straight by any means, it just loosens the curl considerably (my natural curls are corkscrew curls that range from tiny to medium size).

Alot of people don't think I am relaxed either. When I get my hair relaxed the same day and it is looking like 2a texture, people are still looking. I'm like, "It's a touch-up-duhhhh!":lachen:

I would take that as a compliment. Because from your pic, your hair looks VERY healthy and beautiful. I would take that as your hair is straight, but it's also still thick and pretty. I go through the same thing. When I perm, my hair is straight, but it's still thick.

I hear that alot too. Ever since I started relaxing at age 13 my hair has never been bone straight. No matter how long the relaxer is left on the hair my hair always retains a curl pattern. I've learned to love it cause it offers versatility for me.

i've actually seen thin, fried, full of splits and chewed-up ends in people who are natural...but i'm not really sure there is a positive or negative way to take the comment. it seems like a neutral comment like "oh i didn't know your shoes were navy blue, i thought they were black"

This happened to me in the salon. This was like 12 years ago. I am completely natural now.

Anyway the stylist had just finished styling my hair and spraying it with oil sheen. Her next client said "Wow her hair is thick! I wonder what it will look like with a fresh touch up." LOL!! My stylist said, "this child has thick hair. I just gave her touch up! HMPH!!!"

My stylist was really pissed, but the lady told me I was blessed to have thick hair like that. Mind you my hair was bone straight! This really cracked me up!

I have been told this too! And I use to think my hair was resistent and really coarse and so I would leave the relaxer in longer and ended up with overprocessed, damaged hair :wallbash:......Never again! Fortunately, it led me here to LHCF though :yep:
I now texlax on purpose and prefer my hair underprocessed.

Like other posters have said, take it as a compliment (I do now).

Actually I get the opposite. I'm natural and often times people think my hair is relaxed, especially when I have it rollerset. It use to tick me off, since I don't normally wear my hair in straight styles, but when I smooth it out in a bun, my roots often look straight). But often times my roots and crown (type 2c-3b) are straight and the edges are puffy (3c/4a texture). I'm like damn do you not see my edges, and they're like " I just thought you were due for a touch-up".

Ditto, because a natural head that is pressed is usually very pretty/shiny/thick!

No and judging from your pics it must have been meant as a compliment because your hair looks great.
I have been told that my hair looks like a weave or like I'm wearing a wig however.:lachen:

Yeah when people say things like, " I thought you had a weave"
"I thought your hair was natural" I take it as a compliment. But I can see how someone would be offended if they are going for the bone straight look.

Few people know my hair is texlaxed. Most assume I'm natural because my hair is always curly.

Same here. When I tell them it's relaxed they question whether or not I know what "relaxed" means. They say "I mean permed." *sigh* Even my husband didn't believe me until I had him help with a touch-up. :ohwell:

I take for granted that people know that I relax, but a lot don't. Usually it's people who aren't familiar with hair relaxers. I guess they just assume my hair naturally grows out straight (:lachen:funny, I know). Oh well, as long as they think my hair is healthy, they can think whatever else they want :drunk:.

P.S. Don't you just hate it when rude people have the nerves to say "your hair looks fake" or "is that all your hair?" in a snide way?

Yeah I get that alot. Once in high school I was wearing my hair curly and my "friends" came up to me and told me "you should straighten (relax) your hair" but it wasn't said as a complement. They only said it cuz my hair gets big when it's curly. It's not that I don't try to relax bone straight cuz I do but it just doesn't get that way. It takes a super strenght realxer to do that and I'm just not willing to risk it. Super relaxers and haircolor was what damaged my hair in the first place. I should have told them it's my hair back off:catfight:. lol

Yep! All of the time...I don't mind though. I went to braid a clients hair right after I washed my hair and let it airdry while I walked over(2 birds w/ one stone lol). The client's cousin, a friend of mine was like she's natural w/ hair down her back. I laughed at their reactions when I told them I was relaxed. Air-dried, my hair is really thick.

Its not a compliment to me if my hair is straight b/c it just means I didn't do a good job, but if its a wash n go or something like that I don't mind.

I get this often. It doesnt bother me. My hair is "barely" relaxed (my curl pattern is loosened a teensy bit, so it hangs down more instead of being outwardly poofy) and I get a touch-up 3-4 times per year. My hair looks kinda natural.

Anyway, PH, your hair is gorgeously thick. Maybe they think that relaxed hair has to be thin and stringy.

When my hair was relaxed I used to get that all the time. Now it's permed, I still get that, but as long as it healthy and thick, I don't mind.

People mistake me for being a natural all the time but I am relaxed..... texlaxed actually.

Especially when my hair is wet cuz it just coils up.

So yea, a lot of people think I am natural and just flat iron it straight.
