I have a mixture of my mom and dad's hair types her hair is 3 something WSL med thickness my fathers hair is super thick 3/4 mix I have the curl pattern of my mom and the superthickness of my dad's hair. But on both sides all the women have or had WSL and beyond hair and everyone is natural.

My mother has 3b/c hair and so do I. (Although, she swears her hair texture is changing over the years.) My father has straight up 4b hair. So, I obviously take after my mother, though I think maybe my hair is a little less curly than hers. I think my hair might be most like my grandfather's was. Aw, I just really missed him when I wrote that. :(

My mom used to have thick hair like me but medications and chemo thinned it out. She has never let her hair grow longer than shoulder length. It is still beautiful as she keep her regular, every other week salon visit. Her hair is shoulder length in a bob. I get my thickness from her and passed it down to my daughter.

My mother is white, has type 3a hair, babysoft hair but bouncy curls that straighten as they grow long. She used to have thick hair as a young woman, but it's very thin now (she's 58). My white sis has type 2a, very soft and fine like our mother, but only a few waves here and there. It's more like bends than waves. Maybe it's a type 1?
My other sister is biracial and we have the exact same hair, color and all. She has cut her hair short because she is a farmer in the Ukraine. I know - don't ask :)
But when she was younger her hair was long like mine, about bra strap I think before she cut it.

My hair is 3c/4a....relaxed and thick. (I underprocess on purpose, I don't like it bone straight)

My daughter's hair is .....natural 3b/c very curly and thick

My mother is 3c/4a.....relaxed and slightly thin.(bone straight)

My lovely mother probably had 4a/3c hair when she was younger, now it's mostly 4a, fine. She listens to me when i tell her about haircare and she even writes down the names of the products that i suggest...but when i visit her crib, do i see any new products??? Noooooo! lol, bless her heart. And she just recently got her hair permanantly dyed, which i totally don't understand why. and she was like well your hair is dyed red, i said uh no, my hair is a red rinse, it isn't dyed, she was like oh. oh well. LOL. anyways, she wears her hair relaxed and necklength and she is interested in growing it out to shoulder length like she used to have it, but she has alot of breakage cause she wears phony ponys alot. My big sis, she has thin fine 4a hair like our mom, she wears it permed ultra short like the newswoman chick on BET (very sharp). My big big sis, she has super thick mandingo hair like mines, she wears it barely shoulderlenght and is growing it out, it's relaxed but she self-relaxes and i keep stressing to her not to overlap and not to press it but she doesn't listen...she likes to hear me talk but then all she says is 'i know, i know...' then she end up messing her hair up. My hair is mostly 4b, some 4a very super thick and i just reached my first goal at Arm pit length!!!! Yay!!! I am soo happy, i am in love with my hair. my journey started in december when i was shoulder length so i'm doing pretty good. I relax every 12wks, every stylist that does my hair always comments on the thickness of my hair and twice my stylist underestimated my hair and had to go to the back to fetch more relaxer. so i'm hoping to retain the thickness as i strive for brastrap. I have 2 nieces (both of my sis has 1 daughter) the big sis has a daughter with very dry, hair that grows super super slow. it's 4b and she just got her first texturizer at the age of 4. she wears her hair in braids and i am proud to say that she is retaining length since i started buying her products and coaching in how to moisturize. My big big sis's daughter has a weird texture of hair (for our family), it's probably 3a or even 2, it's like a med sandy brown in color. Not a nap in sight, even her roots are straight and silky, and it is very very curly, not coily kinky curly, but like strawset curly and fluffy. very cute, she keeps her hair in ponytails...i try to tell my sis how to moisturize but i'm unsure if she listens, her hair does pretty welll regardless and grows like crazy. she's 3yrs old and when i pull her hair she'd be bra strap if she had one. Those crazy kids....... :)

:D I'm the natural-headed REBEL of the family!

Both my mom and sis have short, jacked up permed hair! Once I reach below-shoulder or longer healthy hair, THEY will not avoid my new haircare advice. Right now, they just think I'm obessed with this forum. :perplexed

Re: Your hair compared to your sister\'s or mom\'s

My mom hair is natural but she press her hair. She's pretty old fashion when it comes to hair. Her hair is very thin around the edges and I thinkher hair needs more moisture. She one of those people who uses hair grease and thats it.
My oldest sister is just like me we are always able to grow our hair but it always end up damage. She got her hair cut about a year ago (this is probably her 3rd hair cut, we both have shaved our hair in the back) and think it's shoulder length now.
My middle sister (there's 3 of us, I'm the baby) never really had the length that me and my oldest sister had but she had thick hair. I know there was an incident of her getting gum in her hair when she was younger and my mom ended up getting her hair cut really low like a boy's cut. Then when it got longer she had a jerri curl put in it. She had the jerri curl for a while and it grow some but it pretty much stayed short. Then she was introduce to weave and she haven't wore her hair since. I saw her hair a few years back and the weave had took it out some more and her was really short.
I think we all about 4a/b but I'm not sure.

Interesting thread. :)

For some reason, I am the only woman in my family today with hair like mine. My hair is wavy when natural, thick/full, and I usually keep it at waistlength, but do cut it much shorter when the mood strikes. Both of my grandmothers had long hair as well as my great-aunts and earlier relatives. But as far as I know on both sides of my family, in my parents' generation, my generation, and the next generation, I am the only one.

My sister is much older than me, and when she was a small child, her hair was very thick and waistlength, too. But she had a bad relaxer when she was little, and her hair broke off and has never grown back. That was back either the late 60s or early 70s when relaxers were much more harsh. Ever since then, her hair grows to her neck and stops, and is very dry and brittle. She has two daughters and their hair is the same way.

I don't remember my sister's hair being long because I was either too young to remember, or the bad relaxer was done before I was born -- I'm not sure which. I only know what her hair was like from pictures and from my mother telling me. My sister's hair is a different texture than mine (tightly curled and very dry with no shine) and according to my mother it was always dry and difficult to comb and style when she was little (before the relaxer). I once asked my mother about this a long time ago, so that's when she told me. It hurt my sister's scalp to have her hair combed or brushed and her daughters are the same way today, even with relaxed hair.

My mother thought she was doing something good by letting my sister get the relaxer and I can tell she still feels bad about that decision. I had relaxers when I was young and my hair never suffered, but I guess they were less harsh by that time. I think the inherent dryness of her hair must have something to do with it never growing back? Sometimes when we are visiting each other, she will look at my hair and comment on how it is so different from hers with a sad voice, which makes me feel sad as well. We come from two different marriages (different fathers with very different appearances and hair) and I know that has something to do with it. We don't think of each other as "half-sisters," we are whole. :)

Her daughters also compare their hair to mine which makes me feel bad sometimes. They have asked me a couple of times to help make their hair like mine. I have tried but I'm not sure what to do. They don't live near me, but when they visit and ask, I have tried washing, deep conditioning and styling it using the products that work for me, but they don't work the same on their hair.

I visit the hair board sometimes and read about what members are using to make their hair grow and softer, but I am nervous and afraid to recommend things I don't know about firsthand to my nieces. I don't want to do more harm than good. I really haven't seen any 'before' pictures posted here that look as dry, brittle and broken off as their hair does, so I don't know if what other ladies are using would help them. I would never describe their hair that way in 'real life' to them, and have not said any of what I'm writing about here now to them or other people, of course. My sister and nieces get weaves and braids often to make their hair long, which looks very nice on them.

My mother's hair is very soft, fine and naturally loosely curled. It has a nice shine and grows to a few inches below her shoulders. She gets a mild relaxer touch-up twice a year or less -- sometimes at the hairdressers, sometimes I apply it. It doesn't "hold a curl" for long when she uses a curling iron because it is "too soft," so that is her one constant complaint. She sometimes wears it curly by applying gel and scrunching, as do I. I can use the same products on her hair that I use on mine with good results. :)

Good gracious, I didn't realize I had written so much up there. I'm sorry.

Also, if anyone has recommendations that you think might really help my nieces' hair, please let me know via another thread or PM, if you don't mind sharing. :)

My mom's hair is the bomb compared to mine. Her hair is ALOT thicker and she has about 5 inches on me. She washes her hair w/ $1.00 shampoo...doesn't condition at all and rolls her hair with some kind of hair lotion and that's it and it comes out bouncy, shiny, frizz-free and stays in for forever. She sleeps any ol way with no scarf or anything and gets perms 2 or 3 times a year. She takes no interest in hair care, but it looks like she does it all of the time!

My mom's hair doesn't seem all that similar to mine--her hair is more tightly coiled (O shaped all over)--she says its coarser, but I think it's about the same as mine. But both her and my granny's hair is thin, soft, and fine strand(ed). My granny has a white TWA, and my mom is a first year loc'er. My dad has tightly coiled hair too (although I think he wears a texturizer now because he wants it in a ponytail :look: ), and my hair is curlier than my parents, so I dunno where it comes from. I have photos of my mom, granny, and my great granny on my dad's side in my first transitioning photo album.

My mother uses the dollar V05 shampoos, and doesn't use conditioner either, even though I've bought it for her and encouraged her to. She won't sleep with a scarf either because it makes her head "too hot." (I also bought the scarf for her) She also uses Luster's Pink Oil Lotion which is horrible on my hair and many other people's. Her hair always looks fabulous and healthy, though, like your Mom's does, so I just leave her alone. :)

I couldn't do without my conditioners and scarves, though, even though I know I did when she was caring for my hair when I was a child.

My mother has nice hair it's a little thinner than mine but it's healthy. She was attending the Dominican salon but lately she's been wearing what we call protective styles by braiding it up and wearing the latest wigs, she has also been stretching her relaxer for the past 8 months or so, she didn't realize the things she was doing was actually really good until I told her. Her hair's length is unknow for all the shrinkage but when it's out w/shrinkage it's a little past shoulder length which is where I am now w/o shrinkage. I've been getting on her about moisture while her hair is in braids and she has been trying to keep up w/that. She doesn't give me problems w/advice because I've been her stylist on and off for years (with the children and the hubby I don't have as much time as I use to). Overall her hair compared to mine I would say is about the same w/the exception that I moisturize much more and at this time she has more length than I.

My mother is a 3c/4a type that can grow her hair long but it is thin. My oldest sister is 4b with slow hair growth(or maybe she just needs to retain length) My other sister is 4a/b, really thick fast growing. I'm 4a/b really thick, fast growing as well. My sister's hair can get longer than mine more easily because her strands are not as fine as mine and she retains length better. She can grow her hair to brastrap easily.

Hm My hair is 3c/4a just below shoulders, my mom's hair is 3c and is a little longer than mine, I think it would be longer but she relaxes twice a year and puts the relaxer on all of her hair. My 3 sisters who all have thick course 4b hair, the oldest sister's hair is nice and healthy past shoulders, and my second oldest sister has my problem and loves to dye and relax her hair im not sure how long it would be because she always cuts it, and the third oldest cut all her hair off about 4 years ago and is growing it back natural, but she loves that gel too much, im sure it'd be much longer if she took better care of it.
My daddy's hair is as long as mine and still growing and he's only been growing it out for 2 years! He doesnt even do anything to it but wash it once every 2weeks and then my mom oils his scalp and braids it for him. When she comes it out once a week a lot of hair comes out, but his hair is so thick the lost hairs amount to nothing. Im so jealous! lol

My mum's hair is probably a 2b/c, she always blow dries it straight so I don't know! She used to have classic length or longer hair when she was teens-20s but cut it short and hasn't been much longer than shoulder length since.
I think my dad has 4a/b. He used to have an afro in the 70s but it's cut short now.
I don't have any sisters, but I think my brother's hair (3a/3b?) is slightly looser than mine, (I think I'm 3b/c... transitioning...). I remember being annoyed about that when I was younger.

my mom has natural type 2 hair...fine strands but alotta hair
my dad has type 4 very course hair...
my sisters...o boy..we all various types...
honeisos..who is a member and also my sister..i suppose her hair is type 3c i believe..
another sister is who is the only relaxed head in the family..i have no idea what her natural hair type is b/c it is relaxed...my youngest sister is 3a ...
me..i have type 3b-4a...my hair is just crazy with textures...kinks coils and curls..i like it alot..it is such a new adventure for me...

Mom-has beautiful salt and pepper hair.
Oldest sis-her hair okay. I never liked the texture. It doesn't grow like mine does.
Me-I have very thick coarsed hair. When I was natural, it grew like wild fires. I am relaxed now but it doesn't grow at that pace anymore. I like the texture but I want more length.
Baby sis- she doesn't take care of her hair. It has basically fallen out. But her texture is right. The back of her hair is kind of curly! When taken care of she has those naturally silky strands. Heifer makes me sick!

My hair is 4a and very easy to straighten with heat and wet sets pretty well. My momma's hair is 4b and it takes a lot more heat and elbow grease to press her hair. She has also worn extensions non-stop for the past 15 years, so I think this has made her hair a bit dryer and permanently stretched her hair out so it doesn't curl up when its wet.

My mom's hair is 4a at the crown and 3c in the other places. Her hair is very thick and I franly envy it. She keeps it at a reasonable length: shoulder or a few inches past shoulder, so that it's easier to manage. It is thick and although it's been died... NO DAMAGE! don't ask me why, i really dont know. I have the dry hair compared to her... Moisturizes daily (b/c of me) and wears a scarf sometimes, but even if she doesn't, her hair always looks smooth and nice. She even brushes her wet hair! i told her that it's not good but she continues to do it and i see no damage! i really don't get it. And her ends always look good although she blowdries and trims once in a while. She relaxes often too, but i'm trying to get her away from that... ugh dammit, why did she have to be so lucky!

My sister's hair used to be at brastrap and she has thick hair, 4a. Around 15, she started doing her hair by herself, flatironing every morning, blowdrying every week, etc... and that year, boy, both our heads of hair broke up something bad! and you can see pictures from where she started, brastrap, then eventually shoulder and struggling to grow it long. Right now it's 3" from brastrap thanx to the advice from LHCF and I just got her on a multivitamin regimen to hopefully increase her hair growth since she doesnt get the daily vitamins AT ALL, and i'm trying to get her to drink more water. She's bunning and everything. Hopefully by next summer, she'll be at her goal and more.

My hair: 3b/3c relaxed, dry for odd reasons. Hair seems to hold more moisture when rollersetted, so i will go back to that. Desperately wish I could go back to combing daily, and brushing once in a while. I'm at brastrap and I'm still nursing my scalp back to health and I wanna have smooth shiny hair. Wish I had hair as strong as my mother's hair and much more volume but that's ok. Desperately wanting more length at the moment :ohwell:

I don't have any sisters so lets compare to my my mother. My mother's hair was very fine but a bit curly (when wet) and shiny. No volume. Just wavy long jet black hair with a natural shine to it. My father's hair on the other hand is completely DIFFERENT story!

My mother is bald on top of her head. I can't remember her wearing her natural hair. When I was in high school she would go to a place in baltimore and get weaves. She now wears wigs. My sister who is now living with my mother (long story) has a thin spot and wanted to transition with braids. My mother talked about her *rough looking hair* until she got a perm. Her last perm took out so much of the hair on top of her head that she is now wearing wigs. Two years ago I had a thin spot and gave up perms. My hair has grown it alot . The top is still thinner than the rest but not as noticeable. Of all the heads in my family, I am the healthiest, not necessarily the longest.

I am not anti perm but they do not work for me or anyone else in my family.

My hair is thick when wet but kind of on the medium to thin side when dry. My mother hair is long brastrap thick natural hair. My older sister has thin hair but thick when it's dry if that makes sense. My younger sister is what you would call a 4a really thin wet or dry.

Re: Your hair compared to your sister\'s or mom\'s

My sister used to have really thick, fast growing hair. But w/ her abusing the perm(perming WAY TO OFTEN) Her hair is short, broken off, and she is getting a little spot trying to be bald. I dont' know what happened to her hair. It used to be so lovely, thick and long. I tried to tell her to stretch it, but she just won't hear me. Oh well.

Mom, is a natural. She has SEVERAL different textures in her hair. You can really tell when it's wet. Almost the whole half of her head has hair that ways, and won't fro, then the bottom half, will fro, and has curls and everything else.

I myself have a little melting pot all the way around. I have fine strands like mom, and w/ my wavy, funky sections, they don't hold a curl and it's hard for them to hold twists. I like the more "nappy" parts, if you will. They will fro, hold a curl, crimp and everything. I don't have to do much to thoes parts to get them to hold the fro style. But.....I am just happy that I have hair

My moms hair is natural medium 3b its just about BSL and healthy even though she colors it just about every month.

My hair is thick 3c/4a healthy and close to BSL.

My sister's hair is thick 4a and not so healthy it could improve if she takes better care of it of course.

Well I am mixed and my Mom is white...

Here are two recent comparison pictures. Obviously I'm the one on the left and my mom is on the right

My hair is rebellious and mean. It's 4a/4b and when natural you need to set the hot comb on fire to get it straight! My younger sister, on the other hand has hair that if you whisper near it it straightens out! Both sides of the family have length mid back to BSL, but mine requires more care to get to that length relaxed. I had to be braided and wigged to get to that length, and I only got to see it for about 10 seconds before the "stylist" started cutting~~~

My mum is mixed with black and white, and my father is black. My mum used to have naturally frizzy hair, very long and fine. shes permed n relaxed and dyed it to the end of its life! its now relaxed and permanently dyed GOD KNOWS how many times and now her hair is beginning to dry and and break. i warned her!!!!
