Re: Your hair compared to your sister\'s or mom\'s

My hair is not the same as my mother and sisters we all have different hair types. My hair is the longest, and probably the healthiest, but I can't be too sure.

My mom is natural like me, but she also takes a lot of medication (and won't take the vitamins I bought her

) so that's why her hair is not as long or as thick as mine.

My oldest sister wears phony ponies all the time so I really am not sure how long her hair is, I just assume mine is longer b/c it was longer before.

My second oldest sister had put a relaxer in her hair and it broke it off badly. I told her she should have come to me when it started breaking off. Oh well. Well my hair is longer than hers and definitely healthier since hers is breaking.

I actually see more Black women w/great hair than those w/jacked up hair.

Re: Your hair compared to your sister\'s or mom\'s

1,000,000% better looking and healthy compared to my mother's. She could care less about her hair.

Re: Your hair compared to your sister\'s or mom\'s

My hair is thicker and healthier, than my moms, but my grandma's is longer than mines.

Re: Your hair compared to your sister\'s or mom\'s

Well we have different hair types. My mother and sisters have 3 hair types and I'm a 4a (I got more of my father's hairtype). My mother's hair was waistlength in the past, my older sister was practically close to it, and my younger sister's hair is still natural (i hope she keeps it that way) wavy and thick and shoulderlength, but i am sure if she hot combs or presses it, it would be bra strap, because when you pull or braids she has a great length. They all have healthy hair. My mom wears her hair natural now, and her hair is absolutely pretty, very curly.

Anyway, my hair is the most damaged now, that's why I came to this hairboard. It's shoulderlength. My goal is bra strap, I was close to it before. I don't think I could achieve waistlength like my mom or sisters. I really just want bra strap and I think i am going to get there this time without any more disasters.

Re: Your hair compared to your sister\'s or mom\'s

Total opposites. My mom had thick, strong hair. It grew really fast, too. She had her haircut 2x a month. At an Air Force base barber shop.

She had long hair as a child, but kept it short after she left home for college (My grandmother wouldn't let her cut it). She probably could have set her hair on fire and not suffered any damage. My hair, otoh, broke off if anyone even thought about trying to style it. My mom treated my hair the way she treated her own. I'm surprised I had any hair at all!

Re: Your hair compared to your sister\'s or mom\'s

My mom's hair is healthy, she is what I call a 2C. She is a natural, she relaxed her hair once and hated the way it felt so she never did it again. It looked great though. It had that shine that naturally straight hair does. Our hair is probably about the same length.
She keeps it covered like me and I haven't seen it in a few months, so I can't be sure.
My sis is a 3C, relaxed. Last time I saw it it was in a bob I think. It looked fine. She is a grease user though so it had that petroleum sheen.

Re: Your hair compared to your sister\'s or mom\'s

My mom and half-sister's hair is completely different than mine. Both of them have 4b hair, very tightly curled. My mom is natural so she has to keep her hair moisterized since it is so dry. I share with her any tips that I find on this board. When I was a teenager she used to constantly relax and dye her hair and wear a fake ponytail. It looked absolutely awful. Her hair looks better and healthier now that she doesn't use any more chemicals. As for my little sister, her hair is short and she mostly wears braids.

On my dad's side of the family most of the people have type 3 hair. I haven't seen any jacked up hair, just mainly boring ponytails. That's how I mainly wear my hair.

Re: Your hair compared to your sister\'s or mom\'s

I dont know hair types but my mom wears her hair short and it's very curly her hair is very healthy and grows extemely fast, since she has worn it short my whole life I have no idea how long it could get...
my sister and I just have the same dad so its hard to compare hair types and she has worn every hairstyle known to man so im shocked her hair still grows lol
my hair has all my ancestors in lol... it I'm natural and have straight sections, wavy, curly, and a few kinky parts

Re: Your hair compared to your sister\'s or mom\'s

My mom has always kept her hair short and it is in good condition (she is a 4B). My sister (in my avatar) is my hair twin. She is a 2C. She is 100% natural and she is two steps ahead of me since I am transitioning. Her hair is in excellent condition. It is shiny and strong. I hope to follow in her hairsteps.

hmm . . .
scratchchin.gif
my mom wears her hair in a short, relaxed style. she roller sets at night, then finger combs in the morning. her hair is about 3-4 inches, which is how she prefers to wear her hair. she keeps the sides and back natural and relaxes the top of her hair. don't ask me why.
confused.gif

i wear my hair 100% natural, and my hair which has been at the bottom of my neck is beginning to make its way down my back
drunk.gif
. . . and this is after a recent trim.
smile.gif

the only other woman i have to compare my hair to is my hair sister (who is half german = white). she wears her hair 100% natural and girlfriend has diana ross big hair.
bdance.gif
she refuses to cut it, which i admire her for. the last time i saw her a few years ago, her hair was past bra strap, going toward her behind.

she was one of my main inspirations for becoming natural.

Re: Your hair compared to your sister\'s or mom\'s

My mother's hair is much longer than mine. She gets it relaxed and she has been my inspiration for stretching out the relaxers. That's what we did when I was younger - at least 8 weeks between. She doesn't comb her new growth, doesn't own a brush, does hot oil treatments for a couple of days sometimes - literally. She brags that her hair is never dry. She takes very good care of her hair and when she started to do the days-long hot oil treatment, her hair really started to grow. She is still my inspiration. She has always had a good length hair but her hair just took off a couple of years ago and she is in her 50s. Her hair has never been longer. So, even if my hair doesn't start growing down my back now, I know when I get to 50, I'm going to have a head full of hair. LOL.

Re: Your hair compared to your sister\'s or mom\'s

My Mom is 40, former bra strap length natural now almost bra strap length relaxed. She got it relaxed right before Halloween and had a hair cut because she could not handle it all. She will maybe relax 2-3 times a year. She shampoos like once a month, blow drys, and then just wears it in a bun all of the time. Her hair grows like a weed. Her only regular products are oil sheen spray and Africa's Best Organics Hair Mayonaisse.

My sister is 6 3/4, her hair is completely natural now she had 3 relaxers her entire life and one vigorol. She gets her hair washed and pressed every two weeks. She wears braided pony tail buns. My Mom uses some Tea Tree Oil hair grease for maintenance and my aunt uses TCB hair grease to press. When I do it, I wash with Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo (detangling) condition with either lekair cholesterol or Motions CPR, blow dry with Fantasia IC hair polisher and some kind of moisturizer (currently Elasta QP mango butter), I also cornrow her hair when I am at home. If she had to wear a bra, her hair would bra strap length

My hair is exactly like my Mom's except that it is just under chin length and the ends are a bit thin because of some old bleached highlites. My hair has really revived thanks to this board and the one at ezboard. The information and tips I have received are helping my hair to grow in longer and stronger and by this time next year I will be beyond bra strap length hopefully.

Re: Your hair compared to your sister\'s or mom\'s

My hair is exactly like my mom's at the front of my hair line (I think). She has cottony, dreamy-soft, coily hair that makes a nicely-shaped afro and has transitioned into sisterlocs with ease. Her hair grows faster than mine.
cry3.gif
Compared to my mom, my hair growth seems stagnant! She has a very simple routine of moisturizing shampoo, conditioner, and then spritz her hair daily with a distilled water/jojoba oil or distilled water/EVOO combo. Except for covering her hair with a silk scarf and sleeping on a satin pillowcase, that's it! I think she is almost at brastrap. She hasn't straightened her hair in roughly 50 years.

My dad's hair isn't even on Andre's chart, I don't think. It's also very, very soft with coils so small you can barely see them. My brother's hair is like this. Rather than growing outward or upward, it grows inward. What looks like a compact afro turns out to be inches and inches of tightly coiled hair.

I guess my hair is mixture of mom's and her mom's, who had wavy, loosely-curled hair. I can't fit it conveniently into any chart I've seen so far. I think my hair is bi-polar.

Re: Your hair compared to your sister\'s or mom\'s

Ma - Very fine, long 2c/3a hair
Robin - very thick, soft, wavy 4a hair (keeps it short)
Lisa - avg thickness, drier and more coarse (but she doesn't take as good of care as she could)
Me- very thick, soft, wavy 4a hair (keep it long)

Re: Your hair compared to your sister\'s or mom\'s

I am an only child, so no sisters to compare my hair with but my mother has 3c type I think. It has also been fine and she never needed a relaxer but over the years stylists have messed with her hair and put chemicals in it when they were not needed.

To make matters worse, she had breast cancer five years ago and had to go through chemotherapy which took all of her hair out. Her hair is taking it's time to grow back. I noticed one day how she has just apply oil and doo gro grease to her hair and asked her how many times does she wash her hair.

SHe said twice a month and no no no you must do it everyday and we made a trip to the local BSS and now she is washing everyday and has everything she needs to get her hair growing again.

Re: Your hair compared to your sister\'s or mom\'s

I'm a "singleton" so I can only compare to my mom. She has fine, 2b-3a and use to be very long back in her 20s.. then she started experiementing and had it short (frizzy) while I was growing up. But, now, everything I've learned I pass on to her and her hair has turned around! her hair is touching and below shoulder length.
She usually keeps her hair up so when she had it down the other day I was like" wow"!!! Lookin'good...

KATHYMAY....God bless you mom..........my mom's hair sounds similar to yours, she didn't need a relaxer but did it anyway...then a stylist jacked it up so since then she does it herself and not regularly...( I 'm usually like" you need a relaxer????!!! , I can't even tell)
oh and mine is thick, wavy 4a and recently went longer than I've ever been...growing up I had hair to my shoulders, then I experiemented.......etc,etc...you know the rest.

Re: Your hair compared to your sister\'s or mom\'s

Well, I have no sisters (or brothers for that matter, lol), but my mom is a 3b natural who keeps her hair very short and curly. It's quite healthy and always looks good, I think mainly because she is sooo darn healthy. Because my hair is relaxed, I ofcourse have to work harder to keep my hair in great condition, and I love my job
grin.gif
I would say over all that both of us take good care of our hair.

Re: Your hair compared to your sister\'s or mom\'s

My mother has hair like peachtree/Hairlove... don't know how to classify it tho she's natural and brastrap. If she would straighten it it would probably be waist length. Unfortunately it's thinned out alot since she had an operation
cry3.gif

Babysis - Thick, shiny, healthy relaxed and LONGGGG. About 1" longer than bra strap. She does absolutely nothing special to her hair other than washing it and putting it in either a ponytail or those bantu knots. She usually comes to me for relaxers. I should point out that her hair grows like ragweeds, she has to get at least 6" a year and that's with trims and all. She's my hair idol
smile.gif

Bigsis - Hair similar to my mothers but a little longer than shoulder length. She's a natural as well but when she presses her hair it's almost bra strap. (She hasn't done that in a while.
Me - 2b/c (from what i can tell). Healthy and relaxed. A few inches (probably 3) shy of bra strap but i'm hanging in there
smile.gif
. My new growth pattern is not tightly coiled but more wavy and soft.

Re: Your hair compared to your sister\'s or mom\'s

My mother has beautiful hair, however it has been longer but it is very, very thick and healthy. My three sisters all have different hair types than mine. My oldest sister and my baby sister have hair that is similar. Probably 2C, easy to manage, but my baby sister's hair is thin and has never been very long. My middle sister also has beautiful, thick, and long hair like my mother's.

My hair is the only hair that has really been jacked-up. All of us have had some hair problems but definately, mine has been the worse. We are all careful with our hair, yet we still have had problems.

Re: Your hair compared to your sister\'s or mom\'s

my mom and i are the only ones with chemicals in our hair. she has a Wave Nouveau, which is growing like weeds. she's almost at bra strap length without really trying.

all four of my nieces and my sister-in-law are natural. my nieces wear individuals or cornrows most of the time. they don't make much progress though because they don't moisturize the braids or wash their hair enough. a couple of them go 2-3 months (yes, months) without washing their hair. when they say they want it to grow, that's the first thing i ask them.. "when's the last time you washed your hair?" when they tell me two months ago, i tell them "call me when you're serious about caring for your hair."

i'm not wasting anymore time trying to convince them to take care of their hair, and that braids are low maintenance, not no maintenance. we've been having the same conversations for almost three years...

lol,

you can tell me more about taking care of my hair

Re: Your hair compared to your sister\'s or mom\'s

I am jealous of my Mom's hair. The only reason it's not long is because she likes to keep it just brushing her shoulders. But it is soft and shiny. Plus her hair is naturally straight. Humidity does nothing to her hair. In all my life I have NEVER seen her hair frizzy. And when it's wet it doesn't curl up. The only bad thing is that she is a huge salon advocate and won't wash her own hair. On the rare occasions that she does, she ends up with a sink full of hair.

She says she wants my hair. Mine is long but it frizzes up and NEVER stays straight. I take better care of my hair then she does.

Re: Your hair compared to your sister\'s or mom\'s

Yeah, I hope. My hair is growin incredibly slow and all, lol,

Re: Your hair compared to your sister\'s or mom\'s

Well my hair is mostly 4b with 4a and all the 3's thrown in the mix from my dad, i'm trying to keep it long now, its a little below shoulder length. My mom's hair is all 4b, she accepts some of what i tell her from this site, but she's very destructive to her hair, it grows fast though, right now its like at the bottom of her neck but i think it has been bra strap...pretty soon she'll go through one of her not caring phases and destroy it with the curlers and drying products.I have three half sisters. My oldest half-sisters hair has never been long, its always dry and about 0-3 inches long. she has an extremely sensitive scalp. she rarely gets it done and i can count on one hand how many times its looked nice in my lifetime. my other sister gets her hair done weekly, but the styles are always spritzed to death and weaved so i don't really know the length. I think the oldest is 4b, the other is 4b too but she's always lied about her hair type as if people don't have eyes....she'd prolly say she is a 1b. the third sister...i don't know she's in the navy, i never see her and when i do i don't pay much attention to her hair....maybe its shoulder length 4a/b? my little brother is like a 3 with some 2, he's trying to grow it out.....sigh he doesn't take care of his hair either.....i'm desperately seeking some hair inspiration besides girls in videos with weave.

Re: Your hair compared to your sister\'s or mom\'s

My mom has always had very thick 4 hair. I'm not sure if 4A for 4b but she will not miss a perm. It's been growing very long since she's been going to her current hairdresser. It's absolutely gorgeous. My hair is thin and I'm not sure what type it is. It's not like my mom's texture. She said she never had any hair her whole life until after she had my brother. He's 2 years younger than me. Her sister always had all this long gorgeous hair and they used to tease my mom about being short and nappy headed.

I'm not totally sure what my hair looks like without a relaxer but after about 3 or 4 months of new growth It looks like my grandma's and aunt's hair. They have very thick wavy hair like most of my mom's family. Most of them perm to cut down on bulk and get rid of the waves. They say its just too much hair to deal with and the the waves mess up your hairstyles. I guess I'm a mixture between the two textures. I used to have a lot of length as a child and I was relaxed. I kept braids a lot. But since I got in high school my hairs been damaged and cut numerous times. The perms were eating my hair up and on top of that I wasn't taking care of it like I should have. You know how it is when you get a little grown and think you know what you're doing. Tore my hair up. It's now on the road to recovery though since I've slowed down the relaxers and have been wearing protective styles. Hoping to meet my goal of shoulder length by December. I'm not even totally sure what it looks like now. Haven't had it down since June and I'm 7 weeks post relaxer right now. I think I'm gonna go get it blown out this weekend if we don't get all this rain. We'll see...

My mom has very fine but thick 3bc,4a hair in the nape. My moms hair is probably APL, her hair is texturized. My hair is coarse heavy and dense 4a hair with 3b at the nape definite spirals and coils/curls. My sister's hair is much like my mother's as far as its fineness she's 4a very coily. I haven't seen my sister's hair since she was a pre-teen she keeps it in sew ins . So as far as length I couldn't even say. My hair is the most coarse of us 3. My hair can take the most though it very strong .
