Hey everybody!I have been a lurker for about a year and have to first thanks all yall wonderful ladies for all the tips and information that i have gained from this board! :) As of july my hair was the longest it has ever been thanks to this hair care board. It went from sl to apl and i was so excited. But Now i am angry and frustrated!! I have just taken out my month and a half old braids and went to my hair stylist to get washed and blowdried. From the moment she put the small comb in my THICK 4A/B all natural hair i wanted to cry. I even bought my wide tooth combs but she said they were for white girls hair and to trash them! As she began to blowdry my hair without a heat protectant i could see my hair falling all around me. Then she proceeded to comb my hair witha bone comb!Knowing that i didn't have a trim the last time i asked her for a SLIGHT trim!(i even showed her with my fingers).

Her slight trim was a 3-4 inch cut which put me back at shoulder length!
A WHOLE year of good hair practices and growing down the drain. Now she wants me to come back every few weeks for a press in curl HA!
Being kinda young i a feel like i couldn't stop her because ,"i'm young and what do i know!" Now i am back at the beginning and i feel discouraged and i feel that maybe i can't grow and maintain long hair!

ladies please help me!

Girl you are going to have to learn how to open your mouth! OPEN YOUR MOUTH!!! Easier said than done for some I know. Or, as soon as you felt it going south you probably should have left. Trust me when I say, stylists DO NOT know everything. Hell, most don't know anything (worthy of our heads anyway). I am sorry you have lost your progress. Your hair will grow again. In the meantime are you natural/permed? I would start looking into learning how to do my own hair if I were you. Also, before you go to a stylist get some feedback from your friends/family on stylists that they trust. From there, meet them before the appointment and talk and see where there head is.

I'm so sorry that something like this happened to you :(. But don't be discouraged, just make sure that it doesn't happen again! I know your hair is important to you (as all of us here) and the stylist you went to had no sense whatsoever! As soon as I saw her coming with a small tooth comb, I would've got up and left! Please don't be frightened to voice your opinion of what your needs are for your hair and to stop them immediately if they ignore you.

The fact that you went from SL to APL proves that your hair is growing and will become that length again. HTH

thanx Everyone for the encouragement! I will definitly be speaking up more and if she doesn't listen i will just get up out of her chair. She one of the older stylist who have been doing hair forever and knows EVERYTHING ABOUT HAIR! I would love to do my own hair(it is all natural) and i could but i am real faultly about going to get trims now.And i don' know how to trim my own hair.

But you did handle long hair. That is not your fault that your hair dresser cut your progress off. I would say that until you are comfortable enough to assert your wants and needs on someone that you are paying, that maybe you should stay away from hair dressers for a while. Believe me, I know. My hair dresser did my hair for my wedding when she had not seen me in 6 months. She commented on my great growth and then proceeded to burn the hell out of my hair...I wasn't strong enough, even still, to tell her what she needed to do to my hair. So I realized that I still can not go to hair stylists. I have since cut my hair off so its not that big of a deal but since its my natural hair I am going to MAKE SURE THEY DO WHAT I pay them to....

Im so sorry about this but its going to grow back, just you wait and see!

That right there shows you her mentality. But don't be too discouraged. You've learned great things from LHCF (glad to see that you joined) and you can definitely grow back the hair that you lost and have it be healthier than before. Being a member means that you can now search and see inspirational fotki's that were before off limit to you. There's a wealth of knowledge here.

As to feeling like you couldn't say anything: I've been in those shoes before. My mom would leave me at the salon alone when I was younger and some of those stylist will run rough shod over you. My advice: always be in the position to get up and leave if you don't like the treatment you're getting. Drive yourself, ask your ride to stay at the salon with you, or whatever it takes. Also, don't let them turn you away from the mirror while they do your hair (that's a favorite trick of some stylists).

Again, welcome to the board :D!! We're here to help each other reach our goals, and you'll be back on track in no time.

I think you should find a new stylist. They're not all bad but what she did was just wrong. Talk to some friends or stop someone on the street with beautiful hair and get their stylists info. Dont give up. You will have long hair.

Thanx again for the encouragement! I will being washing and blowdrying my own hair this time. Does anyone have any tips on trimming and what kind of scissors to buy?

I agree. In the past I would let people do what they wanted with my head, even trims that I did not ask for or need. Now I always say something if I don't like it. If the stylist doesn't like it, I'll leave before I get my hair jacked up.

I think so, too. Sounds like you may have outgrown this one.
