You look UGLY with a bun

I've had a string of un-compliments since I've been bunning. The one that broke me just happened a few minutes ago when Mom turned to me (out of the blue) and basically said "buns make you look ugly." Okay, so there were other words in there like "matronly" and it wasn't so blunt, but you get the gist.

I'm wearing a bun daily TRYING to avoid heat in an attempt to gain 3+ inches of growth, but even I know...buns aren't my look! (and now, add my mom to a list that agrees buns don't work on my round/full face. others who have "un-complimented" me: boyfriend, best friend, father.)

SO...what are some other PROTECTIVE STYLES i can wear and hopefully look good in? as i attempt to avoid heat? I'm truly thinking about wearing a wig (because apparently i need hair around my face to counteract the roundness...mom even suggested 'tendrills!' - can i puke now?)

Suggestions PLEASE - the self confidence is shrinking with every un-compliment. :(

Thanks

3b/C, bra-strap length, natural

well u can do a braid out.I wouldnt call it protective but atleast u can forgo the heat.Depending on your hair length it should curl nicely around your face.

Goldensugar you're hair is gorgeous! is it natural or do you get it relaxed? I've tried braid-outs and twist-outs which give me good curl pattern, the only problem is i get frizz/pouf at the root. if i could figure a way to combat that....then i'd be in business! ;)

by the way Goldensugar - do you use a flat iron? if so, which one? you're hair is so beautifully straight!

oh thank you!!My hair is currently self relaxed. To get my hair straight I do two things. If i'm going to the salon i have them wet set, blow out the roots and wrap it.
If i do it myself I wet wrap it and flat iron it with conair glass flat iron(i love that thing..makes your hair so smooth with little damage)

Right now i'm really into my braid-outs its just way to hot and humid for straight hair and heat.

Girl I have the same problem, we must have the same face shape. I avoid ALL updos like the plague. The only style I can wear to comaflouge my huge face is my hair out or an instaweave (same thing as a fall, or half-wig). I prefer the instaweave so I can keep my hair in protective single braid pinned up under the instaweave. So my hair is being protected and I have the style that I want.

My suggestions:

1. I've completely eliminated heat in the last year and I wear my relaxed 4b hair stright and out most of time. I rollerset once a week with magnetic rollers and dry on cool setting under hood dryer, takes about 3 hours, heat free and my hair comes smooth and bouncy every time, same as if I used heat. At night, I put 2-3 magnetic rollers in middle of head (like a mohawk) tie with scarf and in the morning, hair has enough body and curl so no need for heat or products.

2. When I occasionally, bun, I accessorize with decorated hairsticks, hairforks, chopsticks, etc. to avoid the *bordom of bunning* and add a little excitement and elegance to my hair. It makes bunning almost an event for me . . .

Wyldcurlz,

That's horrible that you've received those comments, but believe me, you are in good company! I've gotten everything from "You look like a school teacher or librarian," to "Buns make you look stuck-up and prudish!" I've gotten it from co-workers in the past, as well as boyfriends.

It really got me down and was not at all encouraging because of my goals. I just began to experiment with different updos that protected my ends (many in my album) that were very flattering and not so "boring." Then I started receiving almost as many compliments when I wore my hair back as down!!!

That's also why I purchased that wig. I figured I'd have the option flowing hair without taking down my bun. I haven't sported protective styles consistently for a while because I didn't have any growth goals this year. Now that I've decide to grow about 6 more inches, I need to get back to bunning it up (summer) and I'll break out my wig again when it starts getting cooler in the fall.

Above all else, just remember your goal and stay focused. You'll achieve the length you want one day, and all those people that are teasing you will start asking for your secrets :)!

My mom always compared to one of the elderly deaconesses in my church who wears a bun in her hair all the time. As a transitioner that's all I wear for now because it's retaining so much length and growing faster. I'm getting very bored with it but I know I'm reaping the benefits in the process. I agree that accessorizing with chopsticks or even hairpins with rhinestone decorations helps out.

I notice that the only people who complained about my bun had shorter hair than I did

Wear your bun proudly, it will pay off :yep:

My favorite protective style it to gather into a pony and twist then pin my hair to my head with a claw clip and let the ends be free. The ends are exposed to the air, but at least they aren't rubbing against your clothes or getting caught in things. This looks really good if you have curly hair.

I used to feel self conscious with a bun when I first started wearing them. One thing that made a huge difference for me was making a side part, instead of brushing my hair just straight back. Also there is always the good phony pony , that always works

I hope you find a way to wear a bun and feel comfortable. I love my buns but it took my some time, my daughter went through hating hers for a while too , now she loves them. maybe people just have to get used to them on you. if not girl throw some hair on there!!

Co-signing with all those who said wear your bun proudly. My boyfriend always asks me if I am wearing "The Bun" again. I don't care because my hair is thriving and it takes no time at all to style my hair.

Thank you all SO VERY MUCH for all your suggestions, re-assuring words, votes of confidence and for all your beautiful hair albums & pictures with other updo options. I won't get out much this weekend because i'll be here checking out LCHF! ;)

I know this has been asked, but I'd like to re-visit this question - ARE PROTECTIVE STYLES NECESSARY FOR GROWTH? or can i retain length (on natural hair) wearing my hair out? (not necessarily pressed...but maybe twist outs or braid outs?) Keeping in mind, my hair is natural and my ends tend to get a bit...dry.

Again, thank you. You've all been very helpful!

About the bun thing: If you have a fuller face, try two low buns instead of just one. That way the hair looks wide at the base of the neck.

No, protective styling is not mandatory. BUT, if you want longer hair faster, then it won't hurt to do the bun(s) thing.

P.S. Shealoe along the length of the hair before twisting will help with the moisture problem.
