Since I came into this forum, all I hear is "They cut my hair. A few inches were cut. They are jealous."
IF there are so many sylists doing improper things to your head, then learn how to cut it your self, or get a relative, or a really really really trusted professional.
I hate to put it like this, but when you go to a franchise like master cuts, great clips or something like that( white stylists)they actually TRIM you hair!!! I go to Master Cuts all the time.
It's not that easy. I can do everything myself, I have in the past but I thought the proper way to take care of my hair is to let the professional do the relaxer.
I tried to be so careful. She did my braids first and I watched her do the hair of others. I saw that she was careful not to overlap. I saw that she insisted on conditioning & that she even turned down clients that did not want conditioner.
The first 2 times she did my relaxer and trimmed were perfect and then the 3rd time, she jacked me up.
She was my stylist for a year and a half with no mis-haps, I trusted her and then she jacked me after much progress
I know it is not easy. But there are so many posts on what the stylists do. Maybe someone should make a video, if there is not one available already to show us how to cut our hair. Shoo, I cut my own hair, and it grew back to where it was, and I am happy. I don't know how, but I got a pair of shears, and cut evenly, and my hair is beautiful.

I agree!! When I need a trim, I go to Supercuts. $10 and they trim the ends ONLY. I've gotten good results by going to a barber too.
All I care about is relaxing. My overlapping fiasco has me breaking. I'll say ONE thing for the stylist. I had few to no split ends and she didn't even mention a trim.
'course my hair is breaking so i guess its a moot point anyway.

I would certainly like to be stylist free. Still, it would be nice to have someone I could trust to trim my ends and keep my hair in a nice shape as I grow out my relaxer. I have considered super cuts - straighten my hair myself and then go in for a trim.
I trust my stylist to trim and relax. He's consistant, but he overcharges me for EVERYTHING, from a bottle of conditioner that I could get cheaper at Trade Secret to a chemical treatment that I could try to do at home. (At least he's just money hungry and not hair jealous.)
I thought either Grey or Howse went into detail about having super sharp scissors on hand to trim split ends in that book about retaining 6 inches of hair in 1 year. She wasn't talking cutting hair into a style, just dusting the ends.
I do my own hair, relaxing, trimming, etc. I do wish that I could find a really good stylist to go to, just for relaxers and some styling (updos, etc.). I just don't have the patience to wait all day to get my hair done or to break in a new stylist.
Well, I think I've offically given up on stylists. I went to the hairdresser yesterday to get a relaxer from a shop that was recommended on this board, and let's just say that there's a portion of my hair that is very underprocessed. I didn't discover it until the rollers came out. The embarrassing part is that I paid $90 to have this done, yes, $90. The way I see it is if I want to under/over process my hair, I can do it myself for free. I've relaxed my hair in the past better or achieved the same results doing my hair myself, so why I am giving my money away to these stylists? I moved to Maryland 6 months ago, and have been to 3 different hairdressers, and you would think at least one of them would've done a decent job, but to no avail. So I definitely understand why people choose to do their own hair.
I only go to the hairdresser to get a good press & curl. I bought a split ender and it is working for me so no more hair trims from them. If I knew how to press my hair myself, I would be do that also.

Karonica I was thinking the same thing. I'm very interested in trying this also.

I do my own hair. When I'm not wearing human hair braids (which I do myself) I press it after washing conditioning and drying. If my hair needs to be even or if I just want to get rid of split ends-I trim it myself or my mother does it.
i really liek this idea but last time i trimes my hair 4 the big chop it was the wonkiest chop ever lol and i had to get my mum to even it out later on so i'm out of the question!!
I agree with sillygurl18. The white stylists at the chain shops seem to do a very good job at just trimming the ends. I've been a couple of times and it really looked fresh!
My mother has a friend that goes to a white salon. She says they do a great job and don't weigh her hair down with a lot of chemicals. Her hair is always bouncy and pretty!
