Working out and keeping that fresh hair look

Alright girls, I've got sort of a problem. So at the beginning of the year I started back on my exercise routine. The only problem is that I get to sweating so much I have drops of sweat coming off my hair ends. I hurry home and wrap my hair back up. But after a couple days of doing this routine, and I go to the gym everyday except the weekend, my hair is getting puffy and dry around the edges.

So I wash every thursday with Nexxus Botanoil Shampoo, and deep condition every other week with Nexxus Humectress, I also have a leave in cond of Elasta Qp (Recovery Oil Moisturizer) or either the Giovanni leave in (still new, havnt tried it yet).

My question is, since I'm a newbie, am I washing good enough or do I need to wash maybe twice a week? Or are there any kind of products that can help out during the week, or need to be added to my wash to help? I'm really just worried about over washing.

So ladies, excuse my ignorance on this, but I'm learning. :D

I have had to be very creative.

I work out 6 days a week. I shampoo my hair on heavy workout days which I limit to 2 or 3 times a week. On the other days I do lighter workouts that don't make me sweat as much like 1 hour 3.5 mph walks on the treadmill or Pilates.

My mother told me that she wraps her hair before working out and that helps.

I'm just getting into working out too, I was wondering if it would be okay to slap on some deep conditioner under a plastic cap (obviously under a hat or scarf) and a do my workouts? My theory is, that way I would get some deep treatments activated by my body heat, and then just do a fusion wash after my workout? On other days I would just do co-washes, let me know what ya think!

alli77 this is what a lady use to do at the gym that I went to(haven't been in a while) she would go in the sauna room(can't remember for how long though). I plan on getting back into to exercise mode within the next two week-I have TOO many papers due this week/beginning of next week- but when I go back I plan on using the sauna room for 15 minutes(30 if I can stand it) to deep co.

I normally wrap my hair, I don't care how I look, lol. All that matters is that my hair ends up ok!

Oh yeah, I can't wait to sit in those steam rooms to get my DC on! Always thinking about the hair!

My hair is in a weird place right now.. I only wear half wigs, phonytails or wear my hair curly. So working out definitely makes me sweat a lot and I plan to be on the 5 times a week work out.

I Guess I am just going to have to commit to a stricter hair regimen everyday. I just dont like the whole scarf at the gym look. So I figure I might have to do that when I leaving.. or in the sauna, when I am bold enough to go sit in there

I DC my hair in the sauna all the time...just slap on some condish before you go in, don't even need a plastic cap.
It's a great way to relax after the workout and pamper your skin and hair at the same time. :)

Thanks a lot ladies for your responses. I've heard from a few people before, that I should just wrap my hair before going and wear the scarf. I just found this to be kinda funny looking, and also thought that it would make my head sweat even more with it being covered. But I guess I'll try it due to the fact that we dont have a sauna, at least at this one. But it would be a great way to DC and workout.

yes, you should considering shampooing twice a week.
or at least, a shampoo/dc one day and a co wash d-c another day. that's what i'm striving to do on my two heavy sweat workout days.

Since I shampoo on the same daysas my heavy workouts, I deep condition while working out.

I shampoo, apply the DC, cover with a cap (sit under the dryer for about 15 min sometimes while I drink a protein shake), and workout.

I rinse and shower after that.

Single parenting, school, work all while trying to stay cute and healthy calls for creative time management!

Sometimes I feel that wearing a head scarf would hold more heat on your head. Wouldn't that be bad.

i think the important thing is jsut keeping you ends from getting wet. has anyone tried pin curls and then working out? That way you do not have to put a scarf on. The hairs are not laying on top of each other like when you wrap it. That is, if you don't mind wearing pin curls outside.

Man, last year this problem resulted in my working out only when I had braids in my head. I used to read of women on these boards who worked out all the time with no braids and I never got it. Now that I barely wear braids anymore, I actually work out in a way where I won't sweat as much! I either try to work out on the track when the weather is cool and there's a breeze--I'll barely sweat. Or if I'm at the gym I'll make sure that I'm near the fans. But there are those days where none of these are possible, so I resort to gellin' my hairline in the morning.

That's what I'm talking about! The scarf thing was a little scary but I've found cute ways to wrap it (african style-with the bun in back) with my conditioner on and my plastic cap underneath. It works to my advantage because it looks stylish and chic and I'm doing something healthy for my hair! When I finish working out I slap on some more, sit in the sauna (sans plastic cap) for 20 minutes and my hair would be okay!

I started a thread on this last year and people had tips here too. My solution was wrapping my hair as you stated. I still sweated but it kept my hair from breaking off with just putting a bandana on it and I waited until I cooled off to take it off and my hair was still the same. I was washing my hair like every other day but I kept getting too much water in my ears which caused ear infections. :( So I would say wrap your hair.

Thanks for that, I tried doing a search but got nothing. Maybe I'm doing it wrong. But I guess the wrapping would be best, with some moisturizer.

I would rinse my hair after every workout and just use a conditioner as a leave in. Since you're relaxed, you can wrap it and let it airdry.
I used to get my hair washed and pressed every 3 weeks and run on the treadmill every day. My hair shed so much back then.

I work out a couple of days a week and I'll wash once during that period. I'm too lazy to worry too much and make a fuss over my hair. Since I usually wear it pinned up it isn't a problem. I just wear a scarf on it at night to keep the edges smooth.

No sweat.:)

For those who wrap their hair during workouts, how worried are you about the sweat staying in your hair? Would I be okay washing my hair once a week and working out 3x a week?

On a sort-of-related topic... has anyone seen a "how to" for wrapping a scarf this way? It would be perfect for an at-the-gym pre-poo or DC.

Hmmm... maybe I'll post the question on the main board, too? Thanks!

hi! i would suggest washing twice a week. i used to do high intensity training every day of the week for 2 years, i skipped washing and my hair would constantly break after a while. sweat contains salt, so this can seriously dry your hair out, and also when u add more moisturizors it builds up and salt is trapped underneath.

I'm not worried about sweat staying in my hair b/c I oil my scalp/hair prior to working out to combat the drying effects of the salt in the sweat. Works wonders.

I work out every other day, and I wash my hair 1 or 2 times a week with no problems. I do have a moisture mix that I spray every day for freshness though.

Thanks DI. I'll try this method when I take my hair out of braids

When do you workout?
If it's after work, you could condition wash afterwards and set your hair in bantu knots. In the morning you could finger fluff the knots and wear your hair curly.

There is no way I would be able to salvage my hair after a workout. I am able to maintain my hair afte, sayr a Friday workout because I know the weekend is coming up. But during the week I have to wash it out after every workout because my hair is drenched.

Wear a plastic cap and DC'ing is a great idea.
