How do you feel about members who have "show stopping hair," but they refuse to reveal their hair care products?

Re: Witholding Information

I don't care, i try not to follow others reggi's i take bits and pieces. Even though im a pj:look: alot of products don't work for me. I would rather know techniques than what products are used.

I don't mind.
After being a PJ for the past 3 years and trying everything everybody raved about I've discovered that chances are the products won't work for me the same way anyway.

But it does still seem suspect. They're either mean and shady or possibly even embarrassed....like some people who don't want to admit they use horse products....or monistat, etc.

I don't care either, but in the back of my mind I thinking they may only be here to brag or sell something.

I can't stand it. Especially when folks come posting progress pics and posters inquire about their regimens/products and they give vague *** answers. I'm like well keep your stupid pics to yaself then if you're not gonna share! :lachen:

What's the big deal? I don't understand why products should be a secret, unless you are mixing up your own concoctions that you are planning to get a patent on (which is unlikely in most cases).

It sucks because I'm super curious, but oh well....

Not much you can do about it I guess, just don't understand why they are on the board then.

It depends. If it's something that I'm really interested in, I'd be mad.
For example, my current battle with my hair is keeping it moist. So if someone came in talking about how moist their hair is but refused to share what they use to moisturize, I'd be mad. I mean...why bring it up if you really aren't trying to share?

But if it's not something that I'm really interested in, I'd just pity them and I'd kind of laugh too, because to me, they'd come off as one of those crazy people who are always competing with everyone else for no reason.
I always feel sorry for folks like that, because it's unnecessary stress for them. Ain't nobody checking for you like that. :nono:

Oh, that's a good one! But if that were the case they could just say so....then they'd have some really interested prospective customers for the future.

hahahaha funny ^^^^^^^^

Yea and the end of the day I dont care if they share or not....but when I see ppl ask for reggies b/c they are the same hair type and the OP dont respond Im always kinda like "how rude!" lol.... they lucky I like the hair porn cuz half the time I dont wanna even open the " OMG look how long my hair is na na na booo booo on you threads" hahahaha but thats only cuz im hatin till my hair is long lmao....but if I ever achieve great lengths I would share my reggie if asked :)

You can't take anything people say as gospel.

Some folks will give you a breakdown of their regi, only to find out they may have left out something important, such as 'rinse immediately', or 'apply very little of it.'

It could be intentional on their part, or not.

I do think its crap if folks do not want to share, though.

I've recently come across a youtube channel where the lady will tell you what kind of product she's using, but refuses to mention brand names. Like she'll say what kind of oil she uses and how she uses it, but she won't tell you the actual brand. I can understand that. She has a very logical way of thinking about hair care and instead just wants you to use whatever brand works for you.

I don't mind people mentioning brands at all. I'm just saying I can understand her point of view. Now if you're not giving up any info at all ... :nono:

Le sigh when the super long haired members DO (and many have) share their reggie, they find themselves bombarded and answering the same question 8 mil times. People refuse to search and tend to grill others for minute details. This ain't a court of law! :giggle:

At the end of the day, nobody's reggie is going to work exactly as it does for them for another person.

People have a right to share and withhold any info they see fit. It's a
"take it or leave it" kinda thing here and on other sites. If some members choose to hold out, others have 50-11 new products they're raving about. It balances out. Nobody's entitled to anymore than this, IMHO.

OK as a mixologist, I can answer this. Proportions/concentrations are VERY important when making a product as well as knowing the potential for allergic reactions . For random strangers that I know nothing about healthwise, this has major negative potential. I'm VERY careful about what I say on these subjects because I know people here have a tendency to think if 1 oz works well 10oz will work 10x well. People have a tendency to abuse natural products and that's their choice, but not on my recommendations. It's an issue of intergrity for me. I know these things can seriously hurt somneone if used w/o responsibility.

BTW, just because someone hasn't patented something now, doesn't mean they won't do it later.

I agree with this - each head of hair is different. But if someone is trying to create or tweak a regimen for themselves, and want to try something that has worked for someone else, why not? Withholding that information doesn't even give them a chance to try.

I feel like whenever people stress, "do what works for YOU," it's not because they're genuinely concerned about the other person's head, it's because they want to keep what they're using exclusive/their little secret/etc, which is selfish.

We've all heard vague responses before:

"What mascara is that?"
"Just some generic stuff in a pink tube."

"What flat iron do you use?"
"I don't remember - any old thing."

In a place like this, where we're here to help one another, why wouldn't you share information? I understand people will share what they want at will, but 9 times out of 10, it's out of selfishness. I'm not saying everyone does this, but it's just my two cents.

You take information from everyone else on here to help yourself, but when someone asks you something, you want to get all dodgy and nonchalant (and not you, Jamaraa, but the general you). I hate stuff like that.

Well as I said...it's the net, a very mixed bag. For every one person that won't share, most are posting 50-11 prods/ideas. This balances out. There are very few mystery prods out there....sometimes you just gott go out and try something! I'll betcha this, nobody who is holding out isn't using stuff that hasn't been mentioned here at least once.

Actually some people are here simply for themselves and not to give info. Those folks help keep the ball rolling by paying their fees. There are plenty of members who have never posted 1 time and others who did and now lurk.

Maybe they're like me and don't have a "regimen" to speak of? :ohwell:

Speaking of which, I'd like to write one up, can anyone give me a list or outline of what should be included?

I really don't mind. Sometimes people just like to show their hair without getting into what all they put in it. Most of the time it's not the products but how they take care of their hair that helps it grow. Personally, I'm a big enough PJ so I really don't need to hear of anyone else reggie because I would be tempted to try it lol. But when I get to my goal length and I post pics I wouldn't have a problem sharing any information.

Depending on the levl of vagueness it can be very frustrating.

When I was trying to put together a regi and someone would just say they used an oil before rollersetting. Of course people would ask which oil. The response would be 'some kinda african oil from wm'.

Mmmm there are about 5 different brands with african in the name at walmart.

No for those who just don't want to endorse certain BRANDS, but will tell you the product- that doesn't bother me. ( Coconut Oil vs. XYZ Coconut oil)

Bene I don't have a reggie either. No joke.

If you wanna write one up, you put what you use, how often useage is for each prod, and if you choose to use it alone or mixed w/ other prods. If you use tools or styling prods of any sort, add that and at what point you use it in your routine.

The best reg I've seen in terms of presentation is FlowerHair's. It's on point! :yep:

yup there also comes a level of responsibility on certain things depending on what is shared

Mainly just day to day (week, month etc. ) hair routine I think:

How often do you wash your hair and what technique you use
How often you DC and how so (i.e. sit under dryer for 30 minutes)
Mention if you use hot oil treatments
How often do you moisturize and seal your hair etc.
And of course-
What products you use

Exactly. When it comes to natural products you must give the most basic and safe info/techniques you know and let people experiment on their own past that, at their own risk. Not so much for most commericial prods...they have a far bigger margin for error than herbals/vits/minerals/etc.

One more thing...this site is both lurkable and searchable on the interwebz even w/o paying. People do it all the time. At least the vague non sharers are actually paying their membership fees so the rest have a place to PJ to infinity! :yep:

There are also people who withhold info on the negative side effects of products because they're too intimidated to run the gauntlet of 'tude naysayers frequently get. This bothers me...if something gave you weeping sores and it's the big thing many are using or going to use, people should be warned.

It's not a huge deal for me. The majority here have fotki's, so if their regimen isn't in their siggy, it might be in their fotki. Or on their profile profile. Or somewhere posted to answer some other inquiring mind. Or on their blog. Or on their website. ETC ETC. It's not excruciatingly difficult most of the time finding information about a person's products and regimen because I know the appropriate and common places to look for them. But that's only when I'm curious, which honestly is rare.

If someone posts their regimen/products I'm like "that's cool, maybe I'll go look up the ingredients on that and see if it has potential for my hair" or "I've never heard of that method, lemme go research the success rate on that". :scratchch I ain't tryin' to change my routine all around if it's giving me good results, but I might have some new considerations.

If not there's 50-11 others out there. Oh well. :look: There's too many successful women on this board to be preoccupied with or affected by just one who won't spill the beans.

Well mixed feelings. I've tried enough things to know there is no miracle product, its a combination of product and technique. But in principle, this is a hair care forum.

We are here mainly to discuss things we do to care our hair i.e. products and techniques. So at least if your gonna rave about a result, then it would be nice to share how you got it :yep:

As wonderful as it sounds to find a "miracle product" there really isn't anyone available out there to my knowledge.

In my opinion, healthy hair is at least to 90% due to how you handle it, as in being careful with it and keeping damage to a minimum.

Even if someone has found a miracle product, it might not work for my hair anyway...

Guess I'm not too observant but I haven't really noticed the not sharing of products. Mostly I'm more interested in techniques, youtube is wonderful for that.

IMO It would be a sad person indeed that would feel the need to hide products/techniques on a hair forum post:rolleyes: but I honestly haven't noticed that here, it may just be that the OP didn't see the request, I know I'm a fotki nightmare- I'm constantly tweaking techniques with no updates and I hardly check my messages...
