Especially for the relaxed heads that dont necessarily plan on going natural....Now this may be thinking way ahead of time for most ladies here , but I'm just curious about everyones thoughts.

How long do you think you will continue to put chemicals, specifically relaxers in your hair? Do you think there is an age at which you should no longer be putting relaxers in your hair??

I feel there will be many breakthroughs in hair health in the very near future where these relaxers would be the thing of the past (and I'm not talking about that pill). We would have different choices for our hair.

I remember beyondcute started a topic like this awhile back-- it got lots of good responses so you might wanna check that out: :D http://www.longhaircareforum.com/showthread.php?t=82687

Once I reach my hair goal and maintain it for a few years, I plan on getting reacquainted with my natural hair. I will be natural when they shove me in the casket and send me on to glory. Or bust! :lachen:

Isis...that is a very interesting perspective. You are probably right. I wonder what it would be. Some miracle product that straightens hair without damaging it?

Sistaslick....and you know I did a search too? I always manage to miss something. That was recently too. Hmph. :ohwell:

It might be something natural, some vegetation we've all eaten but never thought about using it to straighten our hair!

REALLY Great question, and here's my answer....HECK NO!!!!:lachen: I just cant see myself burnin and sweating with a relaxer on my head tryna hustle my old self over to the shampoo bowl with my walker in tow. :lachen: Thats just too much, I'm sorry!!! :(

I plan on going natural after I settle down and get married. That way I can do the transition and not have to worry about looking cute b/c I done already snatched a man. :lachen: Okay I'm just playing...but in all seriousness I plan on beginning my transition during my first pregnancy since I dont plan on relaxing during this time anway:D

I want to say no, 'cause I'm planning on just relaxing and hugging my grandkids and not worring about nothing but what fatty item I feel like eating next....
But knowing me, I'll be out there watching my weight and spending time relaxing, combing and curling my long, grey mane....
We'll see if my vain genes are stronger than my lazy ones.....;)

NOOOOOO! I will not relax my hair when I reach this age because I have seen what chemicals have done to my Mom and her sisters (they are almost 70 but don't like look it but that's another story). I think when you reach a certain age your hair becomes fragile than ever so it requires much more TLC.

I hope not...in fact I hope I can go natural and have a huge thick mane in the next 10 years or so. I just want to grow my hair relaxed hair long first and see how I like it.

And anyway since I'm in transition to texlaxed...my texlaxed hair is very can look natural at times when there is no product in it.

Either way I will not have bone straight hair when I'm old and grew. In fact I hope when I'm that age I have that beautiful silver throughout (one of my grandmother's has it...so I hope I inherit her genes). I think it looks gorgeous...when it's healthy:)

I honestly don't know. It all depends on where I am in that stage of my life. Hopefully I will have reached my hair and other goals and will be comfortable enough with my self to cut off all of the relaxed hair. I do know that I won't be coloring my hair. In my family we don't go grey, we go white and I plan on being one of those ladies with beautiful snow white natural hair.

:lachen: Girl you got me crackin up...Thats the truth though! Get the man first...give him a few years to get comfortable....then do the transition

How interesting that this came up.... me and my BF were just having this discussion! I absolutely do not plan to continue relaxing my hair as a senior citizen. When Im a "golden girl" I hope to be basking in my beautiful, natural kinks and curls........ far less damaging, and so much more liberating! I want to be free to be ME, and I dont feel like im free as long as Im addicted to this 8-week creamy crack! I'll probably have locs, because they are just so beautiful to me, and also allow some of the same versatility that "relaxed hair" allows, once they've reached a certain length.

Many of my aunts and other matriarchs in my family have gone natural at this age.... It just seems to make sense in so many ways. :)

I don't know. InshaAllaah, (God willing) I will be still living at that age, and if so the only thing I'll be worrying about is retaining, moisturizing, and having one of grandchildren put two nice platts in my hair. Relaxing and/or pressing maybe far from my thoughts.

I just find that sooo beautiful!!! Camille Cosby, one of my sheroes, first came to mind when I read that! :)

Nope. I see myself with a TWA at that age mostly because relaxing and coloring would be too much stress on the hair. I loved having a TWA, but wanted to experience long hair before I got "too old".

This was one the the reasons why I stopped relaxing. I didn't want to be a old woman who had been relaxing her hair for 40 years. That's crazy to me. I see too many old women with thinning relaxed hair...or a wig.

Exactly!!!! *sigh* That brings back such fond memories....... me and my older sister used to alternate days, and we had to put those "two nice plaits" (or sometimes 4) in my great grandmothers natural hair, which was a healthy, albeit thinning, armpit length. Relaxing her hair was the FARTHEST thing from her mind, although she had been relaxed in "her day."

Most of her contemporaries were wearing wigs by this time..... go figure! *YIKES* Makes me wanna go natural even earlier, so I can begin to salvage my hair before i do permanent damage messing with these chemicals.

my grandma stopped relaxing her hair at around 65(she stopped coloring too). She is at the age now where she is like "accept me as I am!" I love it! Her hair is soo soft and healthy and its grey. I am sooo proud of her! Now all we have to do is convert my mom lol.

Also she will take her plaits down, flick her hair, tilt he head back and be like (in her snooty voice)"ugh what am I going to do with all this hair" LOLOL

very true. I mean if we relaxed bi-monthly (8weeks) until lets say age 55....and we started at age 15, thats still 40 years of relaxing! We would have put chemicals (not including color, etc) on our hair/scalp 346 times.

I kinda believe that your hair texture changes when you get to be this age. I probably won't relax, I plan on transitioning after this year. I am not going to relax for years when my natural hair gets to SL or APL i'll cut the relaxed ends off. The way I see it for as long as Dominican hairshops are around I have nothing to worry about....they can always blowdry it straight. Also I plan to have short (APL or SL) hair when I get old which will be easier to manage in its natural state.

I'm just taking it one day at a time but I would love to just let my hair grow out my head one day.
