lay down when its get really long because i really dont like the up in the air afro look. My friends hair is kind of finer and really long and when he takes his braids down his hair just falls down instead of the afro.

Have you considered a texturizer/relaxer?

With long hair after a braid out it should lay down

Hi Dejuan. I'm sure glad you posted this question. I was wondering the same thing. My hair is also thick and coarse, but I don't want to put any more chemicals in my hair, and as you, my hair is just starting to recover.

Re: will an afro with a thick coarse texture......

I'm thinkin that this just comes along with length. My boyfriend has long hair also and he hates the fro and after awhile his thick coarse hair just started laying down from the weight of it all. Most guys I know with long hair can't get it to stick up cause it's so long. And my hair (even though texturized now this was very very recently that I did this and I was natural for the longest) never really stood up I think cause it was long (I actually tried to get it to fro a little but nothing would help short of teasing it). So yeah, it may just be waiting til its longer.

Mine doesn't stick up anymore unless I wait until it dries and pick it out. Even then it doesn't do a good job of sticking up and my hair is THICK! I like the afro thing tho. esp on guys

If your doctor says to stay away from relaxer please do so. I ignored a dermatologist's advice once before about relaxing my hair. I applied that relaxer to my damaged, flaky, dermatitis scalp and I ended up with oozing scabs everywhere. I woke up the next morning to see my freshly relaxed hair stuck to my head. It took months for my scalp to fully recover.

Dejuan, my hair is very nappy and does not lie down unless it's incredibly long. In general my hair grows outward but after it becomes very long it starts to get heavy. The longer my hair the more it starts to grow downward.

There is a chance that your hair will not lay down even after you acquire a very long length. Everyone's natural hair is different. Since relaxing is not an option, I think you should learn to be happy with your hair however it grows out of your head.

I have had this question on my mind. I guess we just have to wait for it to grow out.

interesting... i wonder once my hair gets longer if it will still grow outward or lay down... either way, i'll still be satisfied.

Mybe you could leave in a fav conditioner and some aloe vera gel once you get more length.
