Wig shopping ettiquete?

So I am about fed up with twists as a PS and I am thinking about wigging up for the rest of the winter. There is a BSS across from my apartment and I want to go try on some wigs there, but I wanted to first ask about etiquette. I know my hair should be clean and all but what else should I know when buying a wig from a store?

I think it depends on the BSS that you go to.

Some BSS owners are pretty cool and don't mind how many wigs you try on. Others tend to have a limit as to how many wigs you can try on (2 or 3). Also, most MAKE you buy a stocking cap to try on the wigs, even if you already have one on (for sanitary reasons).

Sometimes, I have to go to more than one BSS because not all of them sell the same type of wigs. If you can find a BSS that has a really large selection of wigs, most of the time, they're more accommodating to their customers.

Bring your own wig cap. The only time I had to buy one is when I didn't have one.

2 out of the 3 shops I've been to let me try on as many as I wanted. I've only been to one that came back and told me 'ok 3 more' I didn't like that, so I havent been back.

Just handle them carefully and things should be fine.

Now though, I really buy my wigs online

Yeah this one may as well be a wig/weave shop. They barely even have hair care products! But they have decent prices so they get to be my first stop.

The next I'm going to have to get over is other people and the "You're wearing a wig now?" thing. People really feel like they have the right to say/dictate anything about my hair sometimes and I just get tired of having to tell the same people the same thing over and over but sigh...I guess I have to deal with it if I do this.

@Ladysaraii I would love to buy my wigs online, but I want to get a feel for what I like first. The last thing I want to have is a bunch of wigs that I rodered and can't send back that I hate! LOL

^^ I think you should absolutely start with a store so you can get a feel and scope for the styles that suite you.

But a lot of online wig shops let you return, so don't let that deter you once you feel comfortable.

Please buy a new wig cap. I have seen women, although the signs are clearly posted to buy a new/clean wig cap, trying on wigs with nothing covering their greasy looking hair. Imagine getting some kind of head lice from a wig?!?!

As noted above, most shops do limit wigs to trying on 3; however, if you buy a wig they do tend to let you try on more the next time you come in. My shop of choice allows me to try on a ton of wigs. I even took my mom and sister to the shop and they were allowed to try on more than 3 (mom bought 1 and sister bought 1).

If you do purchase a wig, please wash it before you wear it. I am convinced that even though they claim returns are not an option on used hair, shops and on-line stores to sell their returns wigs w/o inspecting them for wear. I received a greasy, synthetic lace top wig from an on-line vendor.
