Why take Amino/protein pills when it's only 1g?

okay this is my last post for the day...i promise! (Yay, this is fun!) I just need to understand this. If a typical person needs about 70grams of protein per day. And the Amino fuel and/or protein pills (L-cysteine, etc) only supply about 1gram per tablet, may i ask why are you guys taking these pills? they are only giving you about 3-5gs daily. Why not just drink a glass of milk or nibble on some cheese, or even a protein candybar or shake? Basically what im asking is, if these pills are somehow better than eating food with protein in it.... then please explain.

I can't speak for others but I think it is beneficial because I have horrible eating habits. Plus you want to start off low to monitor how your body reacts to certain products. I don't know about others but I don't like milk all that much nor do I like eating eggs (makes me bubbly and not in a good way). Cheese I only eat when I desire it. But honestly, if you don't feel comfortable in taking some of these supplements, hold off and consult with a doctor.

Amino acids are protein, broken down into a simpler form. Therefore it's easier for the body to absorb and use in this form.

I also take them because I don't always eat healthy like Champagne said.:)

OK thanks for the posts...I'm not a healthy eater either and i don't eat that much throughout the day. So i've decided to start reading ingredients so i can count my protein intake. And also started eating a protein candybar (Balance Bar which has 15gs protein) daily or every other day. I love milk cheese etc, but i'm not the type that eat veggies or a variety of stuff. I just was curious if there was a good reason to take those HUGE protein pills when they are only 1g of protein each.....
But i do take Vitol Hair vites and GNC biotin and maybe one day i'll add MSM and Flaxseed oil/EPO.

I cannot for the life of me imagine taking all those pills to meet my protein requirment! I'm not saying anything is wrong with it at all...it's just not for me!! :nono:

I skip meals here and there, and also miss my protein requirements sometimes so I'll supplement with Twin Labs Amino Fuel...3 tablespoons yields 100 calories, 15 grams of protein.

There's a much better chance of me doing that (mixed w/water) than swallowing 15 pills....ain't gonna happen!! Especially when I consider who many vitamins I'm already taking....oh lawd!

this is exactly how I felt when I realized the actual amount of grams of protein were in each pill. I drink a protein shake per day and it gets the job done :D

Dee,

What protein shake do you drink? And is it powdery?

I have a protein shake (strawbery flavoured) in my kitchen cupboard with all the aminos in it but I just got tired of drinking it. Too powdery. I prefer the pills (which I'm not consistent with).

However, I do recall Den1 saying in one of her posts that she takes liquid aminos.

ok good it sounds like we are all on the same page....those pills are tooooo darn big to be poppin if they are only 1g of protein each. ;-) i thought maybe they knew something that i didn't know. one day i'll try a protein shake, but as of now I snack on protein candybars and I enjoy them. balance bars are very yummy.

I feel the same way...although I do plan on supplementing with some NAC Cysteine.

Also - What brand of digestive enzyme do you take?

the protein shake that I take is called : GNC Pro Performance Elite Mega Mass... it has 50g of protein in one shake. It's chocolate flavored but I have to add more chocolate syrup (3 teaspoons) to make it taste better. I also blend it with 1 cup of milk. It's not powdery at all when you blend it. HTH

I take: multi-enzyme formula from GNC , it says to take two but I only take one when I have a protein shake

This sounds good. Now, I'm not a big fan of chocolate flavored shakes and stuff so do they have Strawberry or Vanilla?

BC , do you have to blend it with a blender or is it blendable with a shaker or spoon?

CurlyCrly,

Sometimes I blend it with a spoon/fork (if I'm in a hurry) or on occasion I would put the powder in a blender with semi skimmed milk. It's ok, but it was very powdery.:yep:

Maybe I'll get some strawberry syrup like *Dee* suggested. :yep:

Thanks. That's a thought. I am thinking of powdered skim milk and water because due to "guests" in our house, milk doesn't last. I cannot afford to be buying a gallon of milk everyday. :) That's why I'm taking these big horse pills (3-6) of amino acid now. Actually, I didn't know they were this big until I opened it. It's only one bottle. Once it's gone, I'm done with that.

Why not just buy more milk and put in the deep freezer? (if you have one).
I use semi skimmed milk. Full fat milk may separate when frozen but I guess you could always shake it up before using it. I usually freeze on the day of purchase and then a night before it's needed I bring it out of the freezer and defrost it in the fridge so it doesn't get too warm.

When milk is frozen it expands and this can rupture the plastic. If you do decide to freeze, check that the packaging is intact before you defrost it. If it has ruptured it’s better not to use the milk (contamination).

But generally, I don't really have time to keep going shopping so freezing the milk works out to be very convenient. :yep:

About the pills, I find it easier to take them when I lay them lengthways on my tongue then swallow so it goes down lengthways. This way is a little more encouraging for me. Also, I find taking them with warm water helps them glide down easier....(the tricks)
