why is thio-perm hair...?

Considered more fragile than relaxed hair? A thio/curly perm only rearranges things (right?) While a relaxer breaks down bonds and proteins.
So why does curly permed hair have to be moisturized every 5 seconds, while relaxed hair can skip a day? Permed hair can rarely be flat ironed, but relaxed hair can somewhat handle weekly heat?

In my research about curly perms,I have thought abought getting one when my TWA grows out since I cut all my hair off again after severe relaxer damage, they can be more damaging because the hair has to be straightened, then curled. You are talking about a 2- step process for a Wave Nouveau, Wave by Design or Ferm Perm and all the so called" Dry Curls". The moisture is required for the curly perm to keep the curls defined and frizz free. If you moisturized relaxed hair this much it could cause damage. Relaxed hair needs more protein. If you were to use sprays containing water and glycerine on relaxed hair everyday, it would interfere with the straightness of the hair and cause more frizz which you don't want. It is interesting to note that the Dry curls should only be worn straight once every 8 weeks at most, otherwise breakage can occur.
If you find a stylist who is really good at Curly perms and have good home care you can keep the hair healthy. HTH

**some AA women use the thio product that straightens to texturize hair as well. For info about regular perms used by Caucasian women to curl Afro-textured hair, research the"Gina Curl"**

I used to get rusk anti-curl. Its a thio relaxer. Its the same chemical u r talking abiut but not applied like a curly perm using rollers. Its applied like a regular relaxer. I really liked it. I got it professionally done & touched up every 4-6 months. I used it for 4 years. Then I transitioned to natural.

I used weekly heat & I didnt have to do any extraordinary moisturizing. It was just like normal relaxed or texturized hair. Im naturally a 3c & I used the thio relaxer to loosen it to a 3a. In the summer I'd wear it curly & in winter I'd wear it straight.

I've used the Rusk also. I really liked it, I also treated my hair no different than I would have with a regular relaxer.

From my experience (I had a curly perm for years and when I first found LHCF), my hair was porous and could get very dry and snap easily when I slacked on moisturising. I usually moisturised every other day or two though and that was fine when it was shorter. When it reached MBL and WL, I was moisturising more frequently. healthyhair2 gave a good overview of the 2 step curly perm process and maintenance.

hol' up! you were able to reach these lengths witha curly perm? But you BC'd--did it cause damage? HoneyA

When you moisturized, what did you do/products? I'm considering this option of curly perms!

DarkJoy Yep, the moisture helped me to retain length well. I stopped curly perming and started texlaxing because I moved to another country and couldn't find anyone I trusted to do it properly and ended up having to texlax myself (just the roots). I only allowed one stylist to do my curly perm. So if she couldn't do it, it wasn't going to get done. By that time I was WL anyway. I transitioned to natural after moving back home because by that time I was sick of texlaxing and chemicals generally. I started cutting it gradually and transitioned for about 15 months.

I had the Wave by Design curly perm and used Wave by Design, Wave Nouveau or Soft n Free activators. At shorter lengths the WN or Soft n Free worked fine. They seemed lighter to me but WbD was a heavier moisturiser and worked well at longer lengths.

Ohhh theeese! yes, I remember I had one back in the 90s. My hair grew almost to APL in short order very quickly but I chopped it cuz I couldnt afford the TUs anymore (college student).

hmmm....

Ok extremely curious now....do you think you could thio or non-thio the roots only like if you had 4 inches of new growth and protected the relaxed (lye) ends? I thought I saw something about using a "softener" to protect the ends.

caliscurls I remember when I wanted to get a curly perm with WbD initially. I had a few inches of natural hair and straightened ends and I was advised to cut the ends off so I just opted to grow it all the way out and chop off the straight ends and then get the perm. This was back in 2002 I think. The rearranger won't penetrate the relaxed ends and it won't curl so the style won't look right at all. In the end, you'd have to chop the relaxed ends off. It's best to start with virgin hair. You can texlax or relax a curly perm (roots and the length although not advised but I did and it was fine) but you can't do the reverse.

Thanks HoneyA, it would probably be really hard to do anyway, trying to do part of the hair and leave the rest somehow sticking out and protected :look:

Nope. If thio touches any of the other hair at all. It will all break off. I wouldnt risk.

Isn't the Gina curl a thio free perm with amino

Most people are going Amino based everything

Even BKT is now Amino based to get rid of harmful fumes

Based on Adel10's post I googled and found this

Before I texlaxed I'd tried the Liquid Keratin Treatment...it was just okay. It sounds like this may be similar. Results are based on the product and application though.... It would be nice if there was a curly version of this like the thio...off to google...

There is a thread called BKT alternative
Look there to see the results of Amino based BKTs
