Why Is It So Hard To Retain Length?

i wash twice a month. m&s whenever i can, i wear protective styles but i always have this habit of undoing them and checking my length

Are you relaxed, texlaxed, transitioning or natural?

What do you use to wash with?

Do you deep condition? What with?

What do you use to moisturize? Seal?

How often do you moisturize?

What kind of protective styles do you do, and what do you use to hold them in place?

Answering these questions will help us in trying to find the issues. :yep:

Personally for me, I think the easiest way to gain length is with braids or weaves until you get to APL.

While in them, make sure you oil your scalp and edges and practice proper take down and care post take down and keep your protein/moisture level in check. Buns and all that didn't really help me retain length at all what so ever.

I guess it's also a trial and error, if you keep doing the same thing for six months and nothing has changed then it's time to try something else.

i'm relaxed and keep my hair braided

Probably needs more moisture. The LOC method (or some variation, such as LCO) might work for you. After I wash, I put in my leave-in, which also happens to be creamy. I apply while it's still wet/damp. Then I add an oil, focusing on the ends. I don't know how you style your hair, but I often use thick or creamy sealants because I wear up-dos and want to hold in as much moisture as possible over several days. That said, if I feel it still needs a boost in the middle of the week, I'll spritz with water and reseal with oil. I like to use coconut or argan oil.

ETA: Oops. I see you're relaxed. I don't know if my methods would work as well since I'm natural, but it may still be worth a try. :yep: Some relaxed (and natural) women on here also do a light protein treatment. Be sure to follow up with heavy moisture if you do this.

You may need to wash and deep condition once a week, since you only moisturize 1-2 a week. Since you wear braids, can you use a braid spray?

It ain't. Lol. Wear braids for a year straight. Any kind. Make sure they're not done tight. Crochet braids, Cornrows, Box, Senegalese, Braids Under A Wig, Braids Under A Weave, Etc. 4-6 weeks. Maybe 8 if you get some of the bits redone. And leave em alone. Make sure you detangle, clarify and DC your hair everytime you take them down and spritz with moisture daily when you have them in. All I wore was braids in college, I had a ton o' hair by senior year. I got it flat ironed one day and everyone just got real silent. Lol.

I probably would have had more hair but I didn't really do so well with the whole DCing thing during takedowns and daily moisture. Black hair thrives when you leave it alone.

And while you're at it, take a hair vitamin and drink lots of water. I would have done the vitamin thing had I known. You'll probably see 8-12 inches in a year's time with the vitamin.

How long is your relaxed hair?

Were you taking biotin? If so, that can cause breakouts; I get horrible cystic acne from it. Maybe try other supplements that doesn't contain it.

all i get is breakage and split ends. what do you guys do to retain length?

I keep my hair blow dried. All I do is shampoo, condition, grease, and blow dry. To retain length I grease my ends and my scalp every other day and bun it. Also wrap my hair at night.

Re: Bolded

This is probably why I have not seen a significant increase in hair length this past year and a half. And I don't do too much to my hair.
Although I have a tendency to pull my hair out when it's down.
I moved to a new town and I am told the water is hard also.
I have severely slacked off on my vitamins and my hair has been at a stand sill like it has never been since I started this journey.
Before my journey my hair was retaining length easily.
Could be age too though.

I'm natural and SL. I grew my my hair from a TWA to this length by this regime. I don't moisture and seal in the traditional sense. After washing out the conditioner, I mainly lock in the moisture by just greasing. Sometimes I add conditioner to the mix. But that's about it.
