I don't know if it's only because the manufacturers wont sell to black businesses.

There is an African BSS in my neighborhood and nan a black person wants to shop there. The prices are the same. We have been socialized to believe that a product coming from us isn't as good.

They're also good at knocking off products. there's a iron that most hair stylists used I think it's called Kizure, well they started having problems with some Asian companies knocking off their iron tools and selling it as their products. You could tell the difference in the quality of the irons though. Also, some black-owned weave hair companies were complaining how they would knock off the hair too.

I am so proud to say that LITERALLY around the corner from my apartment, an AA owned beauty supply store opened a few months back...I went in to check it out and the service was A+, the store was so well stocked, neat and great price points. I plan on doing a feature on it on my blog so people in my area can know about this new beauty supply store. That is so funny how just a week ago I couldn't tell you where there is one around my area; I'm not big on labeling a business as "black" or supporting them just because they're black owned because I feel that they deserve good business and inflow regardless of them being AA or not....they work hard and give the same service as everyone else and it's my pleasure to come in and support them by purchasing my haircare goods from them. Regardless, it was very nice and inspiring to see this for a change instead of the monopoly of Asian or Indian owned BS stores in my area especially given that this industry is so highly consumed by AA and Caribbean buyers. For anyone who lives in South Florida, the name of the BSS is D&G Beauty Supply in Miramar, Fl.

Madame CJ Walker is rolling over in her grave at what we've allowed to happen in our communities and to the hair care industry. And WE have allowed it. All it takes is a few of us getting together and deciding to open up a BSS. It really is simple. We are a brilliant, talented bunch of women. But the kicker is - can a group of AA women work together successfully without allowing ego to take over? That's really what it all boils down to. Too many of us are not opening businesses due to fear, ego, and limiting beliefs. Time for us to let that stuff go. I look forward to the many AA BSS that will be springing up in the near future.
