Why Does My Hair Hurt?

I may have posted about this before, can't remember but I noticed after removing my braids, doing conditioings and even mosturising, that, combing my newgrowth, is really painful, why? is because my hair is very coily, or What?. I even used Mango butter by Elasta to define my coils and it dried out my hair even more. Any suggestions

I haven't applied any product yet in this pic

are you transitioning? if so, the problem could be scab hair. i experienced this when i went natural. it was completely different from my hair now. i mistook it for a type 4a/b when in fact my natural hair turned out to be a 3b/c. the scab hair was extremely dry and hard to manage. combing my hair was very painful. the hair went away after i did my bc.

This used to happen to me when I was relaxed, it doesn't happen now though. When that would happen, that's when I knew I need a good moisturizing deep treatment then I would have to keep it moisturized after that until my next touch-up. After doing a deep conditioner, I used to use Africa's best hair mayo. to moisturize my new growth daily, it was the only product that worked for me during that time before my touch-up.

Yes, I'm currently transitioning without the BC, i've heard about scab hair, but i've only been relaxing for 1 year out of my 26 years of my entire life and i never did it often so i didn't know it could still penetrate beneath my scalp. I don't have the courage for a BC i have a lot of length.

thats completely understandable that you dont want to BC...i wasn't sure about it either because i had a lot of length as well...

when i BC'd it was literally overnight that my hair changed. the hair was still dry and all that when my mom cut the relaxed ends off but the next day when i washed it it was very soft and curly

so all i can tell you is to continue on with you routine...make sure you are clarifying and deep conditioning...never skip on moisturizing your hair daily...keep up with your protective styles...even though its frustrating you must remember to be gentle with the new growth...when you decide to chop off the relaxed hair your natural hair will be healthy and thank you for it!

Thanks for your suggestions, i've have to get a good moisturzing conditioner, the only one i've been using is lekair cholesterol, after braids, i don't deep condition much either i just use VO5 for conditioner washes.

Thanks for the encouragement!I have to be honest with you, even though i wear protective styles, i've been slacking off I don't moisturise daily, I'm not deep conditioning often, i have clarified but not with shampoo. when i remove my plaits I always comb my hair in sections but its still in a pain in the backside, its kills my scalp and the dryness it terrible.

I am going through the same thing... I have been thinking its a dry scalp. I don't really have dandruff... but I noticed that I don't really have this issue for the first couple of days after I deep condition... then my scalp starts itching...and gets tender. It doesn't seem to excessively tender while I'm washing either... its just when the scalp is really dry...strangly, adding oil only stops the itching but not the tenderness. I'm not sure what's causing it. It has me concerned though.... I don't really believe that... "my scalp itches and hurts when my hair is growing" stuff. Let me know if you figure out what it is or how to stop it.

Hi Den 1" For the dryness, have you tried doing an overnight salt free butter treatment? Just put it on your hair like you were doing a shea butter treatment, go under a plastic bag. In the morning rinse out with warm water and then do a shampoo and a good AVC rinse that has honey in it. Then do the honey conditioner thing for about a week if you are cwashing. Hope this helps. If it doesn't let me know and we will figure this thing out. Bonjour.

Its very strange indeed, i know i don't have flaky scalp, it does tickle and itch a bit daily, i'm not sure whether its growth though. I usually feel the scalp tenderness if my hair is out when i try to comb or detangle the newgrowth, i'm not rough at all with my hair. Maybe i'm just more tenderheaded now, as for the dryness its usually problem when my hair is out. In braids my hair feels quite moisturised. I hope i do work out whats going on with this scalp and newgrowth of mine, i'll let you know when i'm unveiled the secret lol.

Where would i purchase the salt free butter from? What is the hair supposed to feel like after performing this treatment? Wouldn't the shampoo remove the treatment from hair thus limiting its effects? What is the ingredients of the honey conditioner and how long should i leave it on the hair for? Thanks for your help!!!!

I am relaxed and I have this same problem. My scalp is very tender and itchy. I have a dermatologist appointment on tomorrow. I will fill you in on what information I obtain from the dermatologist!

I have to say that I am very tender headed.....But my hair hurts when I start getting new growth...Weird, but that is the only time.

i'd really appreciate reading the information by your dermatologist could you also mention whether the use of chemicals has this effect on the scalp too? Thanks

No problem DEN1. If by chance I forget, send me a pm. You are welcome to the information!

Hello Den1,

I am just getting in from the Dermatologist. I was told my problems are from the oils that put on my scalp. He said it is not good for the scalp. Also, if I have to use oil put it on the ends of my hair. He gave me some medicated drops to massage my scalp with twice a day. He said that this should solve my problem with a week. He also recommended that I not use conditioning shampoos. They are not good for the scalp. I also have flaky and itch scalp. He said that my scalp was not dry, but I just have flaky scalp. I was told to purchase shampoo for just that. I had been buying shampoo for dry and itchy scalp. Of course, it wasn't working. He gave me samples of Neutrogena T/Gel Daily control Dandruff shampoo and Neutrogena Therapeutic T/Gel Extra Strength shampoo. I am going to try these shampoos and I will let you know how it works for me. I hope this information helps!

Den 1 you can buy salt free butter in the dairy section at the supermarket. This is what some Ethiopian ladies use. It leaves your hair quite soft. I have tried it a few times myself. Butter overnight in a baggie plastic cap. then shampoo out in the morning. The shampoo does not undo the process, it helps it because you could not leave the butter in. It would go rancid. A couple of nights of this made an impressionable difference for me when I was going through a snap crackle and pop period. It is so dry here!!!! HTH

Oh I forgot to add about the "honey conditioner" thing. I just add liquid honey to my conditioners for moisture. Bonjour.

I've been doing this a few times/wk for the past month. It has worked really well. I use ghee.

I'm certain that my scalp aches when it is oily. :yep: Mine gets like that w/in a day of washing it, if I'm eating flaxseed regularly. I will usually brush the roots when it feels that way. I will be trying what you guys suggested w/the rinses too.

Wait, does your scalp hurt only after taking out your braids or does it hurt al the time? If it hurts only when taking out braids, then that is understandable since you're constantly pulling at the roots to get the braids off. My scalp hurts a lot after taking out my braids even when I was completely natural for xyrs, and I have never had scalp problems.
