when airdrying and co-only washing I have so much more hair come out than when I shampoo/condition and blowdry?
Isn't airdrying and co-only supposed to be better for my hair? I lose so much hair. Since I've stopped, about a month (my already thick hair) seems even thicker and the amount of hair loss is the least I've ever seen.
Somebody explain the phenomenon.

I can't explain it, but my relaxed hair hated air-drying too. Even now, I can only air-dry in twists or braids.

The same thing happens to me as well! When I shampoo/condition/blowdry, I have less hair come out and my hair is much thicker. I can't explain it though! :perplexed

i notice the same thing too... i've been airdrying for months now and i'm realizing that i'm losing much more hair than back when i used to rollerset every single week, so as soon as i get my touch-up, i'm going back to that. With airdrying, not only do i shed more, and then when i have to ATTEMPT to comb my hair when needed, insane shedding, more breakage too... and I see that my hair absorbs more moisture better when the cuticle is smoothed, i.e when rollerset... in 2006, that's all i plan to do, except occasion airdrying, for braidouts and stuff

I experience the same thing whenever I airdry my hair too. The only thing that I can do to my hair so that is doesn't break is rollerset. I wish I had another alternative because I hate rollersetting my hair and my head is way too big for me to even think about pulling my hair back in some sort of bun.

I noticed this when I CO wash and blow dry. I thought it was just me tho.
LOL... the funny thing is that my Dominican hair dresser told me that I should dry my hair in rollers b/c airdrying is not good for the roots, but I figured that she didnt know what she was talking about. LOL

I think hair whether its relaxed or not, tangles when left to air dry..... Unless it is blow dried, braided, twisted, roller set, bantu knotted, ponytailed or whatever. When you force the hair strands to conform to a certain shape while drying, it eliminates/reduces the chance of getting tanglees therefore less breakage.

I thought it was just me..lol. Now I know. I'll either roller set now (kind of lazy about that) or blowdry on very low.

I was just going to post this same question. When I cowash my hair and put in the leave in I comb and I have no breakage I rollerset it and it was slightly wet at the ends this morning and I had lots of shedding every time I just touched my ends . WTF. I also get shedding when I work out and my hair is damp when I try to comb it  all this shedding. Any suggestions girls??? I know someone out there has some ideas. ;)

I share this problem too... I suggest we all rollerset or blow dry like we use to for a month or so, and see what difference it makes with our hair...

The air drying is killing my hair... I tried to hang with this air drying thang....

But honey..."it's gots to go"

Good question. I've been airdrying for a few mos now and I jus try to manipulate it less as possible to get from shedding like a dog.....

Ladies, you should try Rusk Smoother...when I airdry now i use it on my hair and i tie it with a satin scarf and all the hair that is exposed feels really soft... but the problem is always the roots  they act a little crazy...

i need to buy a blowdrier then... and i wanna treat myself to some nice rollers, all sizes, etc for when I get my touch-up,and that's what I'll do from then on :) i'm actually thinking of going to the salon during the weekend to get a rollerset, even though i'm 10 weeks post... i haven't had a rollerst in FOUR months and i need to see how my hair is, when straight :look:

Interesting indeed. I air dried my hair last night, for the first time last night in a very long time. For my leave-ins I used Salerm 21 and Rivas Silicon Mix Leave-in. Combed out this morning using my Jibere comb... oh was I  .

Shedding, madd shedding.

Rusk Smoother, Salerm 21, Silicon Mix, I have spent a fortune on leave-ins and NONE of them have worked for me. My hair when airdries comes out dry and crispy and shedds without my even really touching it. At this rate, all of my hair will fall out!

My hair is very fragile and I went to airdrying because rollersetting was really making my hair break, but I think that I am going to try doing pincurls and sitting under the dryer at low heat and see how that works. I will do that once a week. I have to was my hair twice a week or my scalp starts itching

I also believe that MTG has made the situation even worse.

ITA I didint want to think that mtg might also be part of the problem . but if it is I might have to give it up :( anyone else experiencing the same thing excess shedding ?

I don't know ladies but I don't think you should comb air dried hair with out rewetting it. This could be the reason you are seeing so much hair in the comb. If I air dry I don't comb again until I wash, when its wet and full of conditioner.

I have 4a relaxed hair that I've been air drying for years.

I never have any problems that this board associates with hair drying : frizz, shedding, inability to look polished and professional.

Perhaps it's the degree to which my hair is relaxed or my particular chemsitry.

But I condition wash with Kenra and air dry my hair every morning before work. I don't put any products on it because daily COs keep my hair moist and supple enough.

I part my hair in the middle comb it through to detangle after I get out of the shower and towel dry. I rarely have hair in the comb (since I started using Kenra. My hair loves it).

Then I just put on a silky robe and get on the computer or have breakfast while it air dries. I sling it periodically to shake water out ...if it's not drying fast enough I might sit in front of a fan for a few minutes. It's takes about an hour for my hair to get 90 percent dry (I have past shoulder length hair that it a couple of inches from armpit...so for longer hair maybe it will take you longer) ...but I can work with nearly dry hair. I don't need my roots dry to curl it.

My hair dries straight. It's not super smooth. When my hair is 90 percent dry, I spritz with Kenra's leave in and comb through. That smooths my hair even more.

Then I put in Caruso's and the steam rolling actually smooths my hair (I've read bad things about Caruso too on this board ..I think people put too many rollers in, steam the rollers too much, and leave them in too long.)

I put only 3 or 4 rollers in my hair. One on each side and 2 in the back...with long hair you don't need a whole but of rollers. (And I wear my hair loose and parted down the middle anyway ...a classic style that doesn't require much manipulation).

I steam my rollers for about 3 seconds then comb through the sections and smooth my hair over the rollers and put the caps on and pins to hold the rollers in place.

I take them out after 1 or 2 minutes. I then comb throught the whole head get a loose, bouncy comb out that lasts all day.

I can get up at 7 a.m. and leave for work (as a journalist) by like 8:45 a.m. -- and I look well pulled together.

P.S. ...Also if smoohness is a big concern, after air drying I wrap my dry hair under a scarf for just a few minutes while I apply make up and dress. I've had people ask "How'd you get your hair so straight" after I've done this ...and with no blowdryer or iron.

I know this is a thread mostly about shedding ...but I just had some airdrying thoughts I wanted to share ...because it seems air drying is always getting a bad name and I don't understand why. I don't get shedding or frizz or a low-class style.

Also, I've noticed people think when they air dry that have to do a 'wash and go' as opposed to styling their hair as they would after a blow dry. I don't understand this.

My mom and I have hair that responds to different products ..and hers is thicker than mine and even likes grease:eek: which would sabotage my hair. But she's had excellent results from air drying as well.

I always air dry unless it gets so unmanageable when I am in that last weeks of my stretch. The key for me is to use some WGHO on my hair while its damp (towel dried) and on my scalp. It sheds less and I add a little more when its dry to give it shine and make it pliable. I use Nexxus, and those products have made a tremendous difference in my hair. Hot oil treatments and my products have increased the elasticity by about 40%-I did a strand test.

I've just started doing this and totally agree. airdryed hair is best combed just before u rewash or as Simplycee says, when its wet. may as well leave it curly/wavy otherwise its more prone to breakage

I'll ad: my hair HATTTEES co-washing

Yeah, I agree I dont try to comb airdried hair. I put it in a bun and then re wett one or 2 days later. I have stopped airdrying because I was getting tangles during conditioning washes....I couldnt take the hair in the comb

I think if you airdry for a number of days...your hair is accumulating normal shedding and when you finally run the comb thru you are seeing alot of hair....either way, I havent ADed in a while.....

WOW i could never do this

When I rewet my hair in between washes, it just gets EVEN MORE FRIZZIER... if there are no products and since i hate detangling, it's extra work for me. I'd rather have hair that the comb can glide through whenever combing is needed.

Sometime, I take the no-manipulation to the extreme and dont attempt to comb my hair until the next wash, but BAM, the minute i undo my hair, i have strands hanging at my ends, knotted hair and all that stuff...

for some odd reason, airdrying worked a little better at the beginning of my journey.... it may be because my hair is longer now or something, but I really want to stop it, unless it's necessary. I need to buy a blowdrier and some rollers. I will mostly do rollersets starting mid-December.

CCD-- Yes you could. Ends don't take long to dry. And with long hair you can curl the ends under and be good to go at 90 percent dry. If you have no products on, the hair dries fast.

PrettyBrownEyes-- You're welcome. If you try it, I would love to hear if this works for you. Let me say that I believe when I first started, my hair had to become accustomed. Maybe that took a couple weeks. Now, it's trained. And it dries straight because it's so used to daily conditioning and air drying.

Now, I did start off by using a very small dab of a leave in creme on damp hair until my hair started retaining moisture from the daily co's. I held off all wet leave-ins until the end, because that will just take your hair longer to dry. And if you're conditioning your hair every day in the shower and not shampooing ... you really don't need any product ... my hair stays VERY moisturized with this system (especially since I do a nightly oil bath under a head scarf. [I like to get my moisture from overnight treatments and rinse-out conditioning as opposed to caking my hair with stuff during the day time. I like fresh, raw hair. )

With no products the hair has a lot of bounce and body after drying. And the Caruso rollers are great. At first I used to leave them in for like 10 mintues ...like with hot rollers ...then I had a bunch of frizzy mess. But steam evaporates fast. And I take those suckers out after 2 minutes and love the results.
