Why do you think weaves are more acceptable than wigs...

just wondering why in society it's easier to tell somebody that it's a weave rather than say it's a wig...

because it's semi-permanent...Just like I'd prefer a permanent bridge or implants to dentures (should I ever lose my teeth, God forbid)....maybe that's just me.

In my area wigs are the preserve of the elderly.Or cancer victims. Thats why i'm like wow when people on board wear wigs- but they look good! If i ever wore a wig my friends ( no matter how good it looks) would take the mickey all day.

Well IMO wigs look BAD, terrible even..looking like something just floating on your head. The obvious exception to the rule is the lacefront wig, however even that have to be the RIGHT ONE, and i don't really favor them to tough. However if you got a great weave artist it can look so good and real.

Where I live, most of the young women wear wigs so I fit right in. My mom gets the best wigs and everyone loves them. Some wigs do look terrible but you have to pick the right ones and the most "realistic" looking ones. I wear a wig as a protective style daily and it never bothers me because I know that underneath that wig is a healthy head of hair. Sometimes I do feel like weaves are more accepted so I do know what you mean. Back home (Long Island, NY) I didn't see many wearing them but they rock them hard in the South. Accepted or not, I continue wearing them because it has really paid off and my "real" hair has thanked me:lol:

I think because you can make the weave look more natural. Most of the wigs i see do look like they are floating on top of your head and looking unnatural. I also wouldnt want it to fall off and me look a fool

This is interesting. I've been thinking about ordering a half-wig.
I've also been thinking about getting a half wig. I see people wear them and they seem pretty natural considering part of your hair is out to blend it. I want the flexibility of being able to wash my own hair and rebraid it without the constant fear of matting. I do agree with what most have said about whole wigs though. The floating look isn't for me :look:

Heck I love bridges and implants but I hate the dentist so I look forward to dentures in my late 60's to 70's:ohwell:

Vanessa Williams was rocking a hawt wig at the Globes. She got it from that wig site that sells vanessa wigs. They have some really pretty natural wigs on there.

I always thought the wigs I see looked funny but I didn't know why. I do agree the that most look like there floating. I received a magazine/catalog yestday and they had wigs with the front portion cut out and you would use your own hair there, it was interesting looking. Where will you be purchasing your half wig or will you order it on line? Also my hair has about 8 different shades, I have no idea how I would blend this.

Bmoreflygirl's hair always looks nice and she wears wigs and weaves and it looks natural. So maybe she can chime in and share some of her knowledge about this.

I'm wearing a wig as a protective style now and some people are surprised when I tell them it's a wig. I don't think weaves are more acceptable because IMO if they're not done right or are in too long then it will look terrible and more noticable. On the other hand wigs are just as good as weaves since both of them require maintenance. The are some wigs that look natural you just have to find the one that's right for your face.

I have a lot of different shades in my hair also so I don't think I will get away with ordering anything online. I want to try on a few at a local BSS to make sure that I can get them to match and blend. I was considering either rinsing my hair black or using indigo because black is much easier to match than this stuff I have going on.

I put a black rinse in my hair Oct. 2005 and shedding like a dog. Rinses are not for me.

I used to believe the taboo but now I have a wavy wig and the older it get the more natural it's looking like some naps. I don't mind since I am natural. I even found a way to leave a little bit of hair out in the front. I am going to rock this wig until it falls apart I already ordered a back up. I am going to wear it so long people are going to forget what my hair ever looked like.

P.S. I love wigs thanks zailless

it seems like half wigs are becoming acceptable because i see them a lot now...but ppl just go crazy of they find out that u have on a full wig...i always tell ppl its weave...cuz technically it is

Another thing is with a wig i can wash my hair as often as i like...not use heat and keep up with my hair better.

This is what I love so much about wearing mine also. Everything that you have mentioned! When I get to my goal, it will have all been worth it!

A weave is more acceptable because to wear one you must have some hair, whether its enough to cornrow or enough to blend with the weave, people know you have some. A wig requires no hair whatsoever to wear, so they will first think that the wearer is bald.

I started recently experimenting with Lacefront wigs and now half wigs over the summer up until now. I wish i would have found them much sooner.

I'm with you on this. I haven't tried a lacefront yet but I rock the half wigs all the time. I was weaved out for years and I wish I knew about the half wigs earlier. I'm going to look into the lacefronts next but I hear you have to be careful with where you get them from. PM me if you have any lf info please.

Because the idea of taking your hair off and keeping it in a box is scary. I still wear them though. But you're right people do get all up in arms about wigs but weaves are accepted.

I guess because people feel that if it's a weave then at least you have hair to "attach something to", whereas if it's a wig, they assume your hair must be real short, so short that you don't even have enough hair to attach tracks to. (i.e. "that you're bald") I've been on both sides of the fence, and I got less weird looks and pity when I was weaved up versus wearing a wig.
