"Honestly, Truly"
Relaxers? I've always heard of the 'six week' rule, is this not true then? I'm due my re touch this week (I have curly perm) and I have to say, my hair has taken well to the new products in this last week, my re growth is getting annoying, but i'm wondering if I should hold out? My aunt also told me, if I don't touch it up on time, it will break.

xx

in my opinion because relaxers are such strong chemicals i want to limit the amount of times it's actually on my hair. thats why i've started to space out my relaxers. i relax every 16-20 weeks now with the help of braids/weaves. also i like to see how much my hair has grown. the longer i wait the more the new growth coils up resulting in shrinkage. so it's a nice suprise to see how much it's grown when i do retouch

One reason to stretch touch ups for relaxers or texturizers is to help avoid overprocessing. It's much easier to overprocess a 1/2 of new growth than it is to overprocess 3 inches of new growth.
It's an individual thing. Some people can't extend their touch ups w/o breakage while other ones can.
I just find that I like to only use chemicals when I have to and I can go awhile before I have to texturize it again.

I agree with Alliyah4eva203 & Tai

I extend my touch-ups. I have noticed more growth and have not experienced breakage. A good way of extending is to wear braids, cornrows etc. But this is not for everyone. If you feel that you 'need' a touch-up then go for it.

LOL, I just saw the thread, I clicked on the forum by accident, but it's on my daughters birthday, so naturally, I'll be caught up all day

Has anyone ever experience breakage during these stretch outs?

Only if I wait too long. As was mentioned before, this is an individual thing. I know after 13 weeks that I must relax or the shedding will start. I used to relax every 8 weeks. I like extending so I can see the new growth better and somehow my hair seems to like it.

When I had a curly perm I only got retouches once every 3 to 4 months on advice of my stylists. So I definitely don't think that 6 weeks is a hard and fast rule especially since my hair was very coarse then (mostly 4b).

Wow! You learn something new every day!! I'm going to definitely hold out and see what happens, like I said, my hair isn't too too bad right now, and seems to be responding to WGO, doo grow and surge, so I'm going to see how I feel at 8 weeks, and use that as a guideline! thanx as usual

Bolly hair I have a wave nouveau, I'm glad you like my hair, you are the only one who does!

Hi babe, I used to extend my relaxers in the past and for me personally it did more harm than good. Im 4a/b and I would suffer severe breakage especially on wash days

. I now relax every 8 weeks as i feel like every 6 weeks is too soon, each to their own...

Thanx ladies, I have no choice but to get it done next week (week 7) my aunt is going to Jamaica! thanx for all the replies.

It depends on your hair. I have very thick 4a hair. I must relax ever 4 weeks or I will have breakage. My hair grows fairly fast, so overprocessing has never been an issue.

JMO..."every six weeks" rule was something concocted by the hairdressers and relaxer companies to keep us in their chairs and dependent on their products. I am mostly 4b with some 4a and a patch of 3c in the back and I used to believe that if I did not get that relaxer every 6 weeks, all of my hair would start popping off at the line of demarcation. I think I believed it to the point that I self-fulfilled my own prophecy...(ergo I believed it so strongly, I sub-consciously made it happen). It didn't happen over night but I went on a mission to make my hair less dependent on relaxers through the use of other products that help me manage the new growth, increase moisture, and help add elasticity. Anyway, that's just my opinion....I'll step off of my soap box now.

Why does breakage and shedding occur as a result of stretching out a relaxer?

...on week 6 myself and growing nervous now.
