Who still does this: Oil sheen for scalp prep before relaxing?

I stopped by Sephora yesterday to pick up a PhytoRelaxer for my retouch.

The hair product specialist--seeing that I had my hair in a frizzy, poofy wash n' go--suggested that I move from an Index 1 to a 2 to combat my frizz and constant reversion issues without completely losing my curl pattern.

She qualified herself to be a longtime licensed hairstylist and had long beautiful hair to prove it. (I'm 6-1, so I can see the top of most women's heads.)

She added that I should prep/base my scalp with Finisheen (I still have some) oil so I won't burn and it will improve my hair's moisture level. I was surprised to hear that because I haven't had my scalp based with oil sheen since the 1990s! LOL!

So, does anyone still follows that practice? I want to try it, but I'm afraid that it would interfere with the straightening process. She assured me that it wouldn't.

Funny how I now trust LHCFers' judgment before a licensed stylist! LOL!

Thanks in advance,

Wow I was working in the salons at that time and we never did that. This is the first I've ever heard of it. I know some people spray if they start to tingle but we always used real base. (Some people use Vasaline) Shrugs. Learned something new today!

Yeah, I remember the stylists used to take several minutes to carefully part and spray down each each area of the scalp.

But this during the era of those crazy-strong Bantu, Optimum, Revlon and Precise relaxers that were guaranteed to leave second- and third-degree burns on patrons' scalps!

I remember getting sprayed before getting Dudley relaxers, but those didn't burn though.

okay I HATED BANTU I HATED BANTU I DID and Revlon too! LOL

Sorry ladies anyone who used them; But I didn't not like those relaxer and those were the ones the salon was pushing on TUesdays and Wednesday specials.
WOW, I am not even joking I have never heard of it until you mentioned it just now. I am going to be on the look out now. LOL

Nah, bring your own base if they must use spray; or go some where else. If you are taking short cuts on my scalp then what else. Neutralizing Shampoo, DC using regular Conditioner :nono:

RUn gal Run LOL

I remember someone trying this on me back when I was a teenager and I still burnt to hell and back. The oil sheen was not heavy enough to provide the necessary layer of protection that my poor scalp needed. Maybe that works for some, but back in the day when I was relaxing I didn't wash often enough and would often scratch a day or two before my relaxer. Petroleum based products were the only things that prevented burns for me, and hey .... burns are nothing to play with so if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Guilty as charged, I have been spraying Isoplus Oil sheen on my scalp as my base for years. I started back in the 1990's when I had the "Toni Braxton" hair cut. My hair stylist used that every time I got a touch up and I have never stopped. I would not consider using anything else no time soon.

I did use EVOO but not an oil sheen when I relaxed with Phyto. My hair is coloured and fine and I used Phyto 1 it relaxed my hair bone straight so not sure if Phyto II is not too strong, I'd rather be underprocessed than over if that makes sense cause at least I can correct it.

I've never heard of this but you've brought back memories with the Precise perm :yep:. That was my first perm and I loved it!! Do they still make it?

I use to do this years ago because I could never get the hair grease or vaseline to spread on my scalp good enough....lol... I did this for my last texlax out of pure laziness, my scalp was fine

Ooh!!! Now that you mentioned old-school, CHEAP relaxers, my sorority sister and I went to this ginormous BSS Saturday. We went up and down every aisle, reminiscing and laughing at old school products we saw, most notably, Raveen and GENTILLE relaxer! LMAO!!! I'm quite sure those products were expired and the price tags were yellowed and repriced!

Yeah, me runnin' gyal. I self-relax now!

I've seen it a LOT recently! They still make it!

Girl, that Precise ain't no joke! Back in the late '80s when I was in undergrad, I recall taking out my hair, my dorm mate's hair, and going home to South Florida on break and taking out my dear Mom's! :lachen:
