Who relaxes every 4 to 5 weeks?

I use too and my hair NEVER grew past shoulder lenght and one side was always much longer than the other due to breakage. I use to think it was normal to look at my shirt and see little pieces of hair but now I know that's breakage and I cringe at the sight of any broken hairs.

LULU relaxes every 5 weeks and she has some thick healthy gorgoeous mane. i couldn't do this, i would be bald, i will never wait any longer than 12-13 weeks, i learnt my lesson when i saw all the flyaway hairs.

I used to do this before this board(4 weeks). I didn't get breakage from it, but my hair could be so much thicker. My crown, nape and temple areas were suffering too because they are so delicate. They really needed a break.

I use to be one of those people. I think that is why my hair looked thin. I am at 6 weeks going on seven and it is killing me. As a matter of fact, I am afraid to wash my hair tonight. It feels like a matted mess underneath. I think I may have to break down and get it relaxed, but I still have to wait a week, cause I have been surging! /images/graemlins/frown.gif /images/graemlins/ohwell.gif

Den1,did you only notice all the flyaways after your touchup?
I'm strtching out to 12 weeks for the 1st time(usually go 8) and so far so good at week 9.I haven't been seeing any flyaways.Your comment scared me though. /images/graemlins/crazy.gif
Im wondering if any damage will only be visible after my touchup.

I didn't notice them as much after the touch-up because they have grown out, but i think the flyaways was mainly due to me coping with diffrent textures for the last 8-9 months, i don't think i should have anything to worry about, now my hair has been corrected. however i did wait too long to relax the growth 5 months, i don't think it caused me major damage though, because i wore braids/twists most of the time.

My problem is that by week 6 i have to start doing conditioner washes every day in order to be able to comb thru my new growth. But, you have to wait atleast a week after the last time you washed before you get a retouch. I can't get a retouch on a tangly mess or I will lose hair adn I can't get a retouch on a clean scalp or else I will get burns.

I do.

I am a 'five weeker' though. I don't see breakage but I do see a lot of shedding and matted hair if I try to go longer than 5-6 weeks. I'm most comfortable relaxing within this time frame unless there's not a lot of new growth, then I wait. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I use to relaxe my hair every 4 week before I came to theboard with motions oil relaxer, myhair was breaking off something terrible. That's actually the reason why I cut it all of and went natural. I recieved the best growth and the healthiest hair in high school when I used Cathy howse suggestion to stretch relaxers to every 10 -12 weeks.

Now I'm about week 7, trying to make it until 12. I think it just depends on your new growth how often you need to relax. I have abit of new growth, I found diluting my shampoos and only rollersetting under hood dryer has soften my new growth tremendously.

The front sides of my hair (in front of my ears) has been steadily thinning due to 1.5 years of rough touchups. The new growth there is more tightly coiled than in the back, and the growth rate is SLOWER. Or does it just seem so because it's more tightly coiled?

Anyway, when my stylist applies relaxer and starts to comb through the new growth, some of it rips at the roots. My stylist really just inserts the teeth of the comb against the scalp and tugs outward shortly after the relaxer has been applied.

I don't know if the frequency of my touchups (every 7-9 weeks) is aggravating the problem, but this is my motivation to relax at home.

I do. Stretching relaxers broke my hair off some kinda terrible. I had to go back to my regular regimine. Five to six weeks tops.

BTW, you have a lot of pretty hair. I love looking at your updates. Do you ever wear it straight or flat ironed?

Yep Me too /images/graemlins/up.gif

Not me....I get my chemical service every 8-10 weeks or longer if I can....I wear it in a wet bun, roller wrap, or gel it down while I have to wait.

I do. /images/graemlins/wave.gif I relax every 5 weeks or I shed horribly. My hair grows fast. I get 1/2 - 3/4" a month. If I didn't my hair would break off. I have gained 3 1/2" inches of hair since June. I use the baggie method 100% of the time with only my bangs out.....The longest I may go is 6 weeks.

Oh Gosh, I would NEVER do that again. Before this board I would relax every 6 weeks. All I can remember is lot's of breakage and shedding, a one inch nape and a thinning hairline. Relaxing every 16 weeks has my hair thriving much better now.

I relax every 12 weeks on schedule unless I'm wearing braids. I find that my hair does better on this schedule.

At week six I stop trying to comb root to tip on dry hair. I condition wash every other day or once between shampoos ( I shampoo every Wed and Sat). Once I put my hair into a bun I take it down to moisturize, baggie at night and put it back up.

Lately I have been getting so much new growth I wear cornrows at week 8 to get me through the last 4 weeks.

Thank-you, yes i have worn my hair straight a few times, this year, when i had my trims, their in my "growth progress" album, i haven't updated it since September though. I'm currently following the no measuring challenge, so i won't have it straightened until April when the challenge ends.

I used to get a relaxer every six weeks and my hair was fine. I can stretch to 8 wks, but any longer without the help of braids, and there is a hair shower every time I comb. Sometimes stretching relaxers defeats its purpose. I just play it by ear. You have to judge by your new growth and texture.

Ditto, I relax about every month and I don't see any adverse effects...now if I wait, my hair gets matted, I can't comb it without hairs breaking off, that's why I do it...
