I'm wondering if I should switch salons.

I currently relax every 12 weeks with plans to start stretching every 16 weeks.

My hairdresser (who is also the salon owner) gets on my nerves. I dread going in there because she complains about how long I take to get my relaxers and feels led to make sarcastic comments about how "nappy" my hair is and what a transformation it's going to be once she relaxes.

She also burns the hell out of my hair everytime she relaxes and charges me $75 because she really has to "work" the chemical through my hair.

Think I should try to self relax?

Please share your thoughts!

If you feel like you can self relax, go for it:grin:, If not, I would seriously consider finding a new stylist. I was going to a salon and even though I was 12 weeks post, I was still charged $50, but I always gave a $5 or $10 tip.

If you decide to stick with her, make sure you keep you new growth moisturised and soft, so that she would have to so call "work" the chemical through your hair.

But if it was me, I would drop her!

I don't know if self-relaxing is the answer, but I think a new stylist may be. She is not doing you a good service (burning the ish out of your hair)...she's charging you a lot (because she's working "harder") AND she's making jokes/having tones about your hair? Sounds like its time for someone new.... you guys don't have the same hair goals.

Alternatively you can have a talk with her and tell her that her comments-unless they are truely beneficial to the health of your hair-are not necessary. I would also be kinda worried about her burning you. That isn't good for your scalp. She should be avoiding getting the chemical there.

Girl, find yourself a new stylist. You dont have to put up with that crap, especially after paying $75 for someone to tear your scalp up. I dont know about self-relaxing, though. I always let a trusted stylist do mine because Im not comfortable relaxing my own hair.

If you've never self-relaxed before, and feel comfortable enough to try it, be sure to get all the self-relaxing tips possible that's on this board. Or definitely, get a new stylist! Either way, I would never go to that ignorant stylist again. The nerve of her!

Get a new sylist!!! This is a 'hair disaster' waiting to happen. You have a beautiful head of hair and she sounds VERY spiteful and disrespectful. I'd bet money that she burns you ON PURPOSE:sekret:

Think about this....how will you feel when (not if) she causes a major setback? You already know that she is not attentive to YOUR needs and you are spending YOUR money with her:mad:

Please don't go back!!! Your intuition (God's voice) has already warned you!!

I would get a new stylist. She is blatantly rude and unless her price sheet states that relaxer prices vary according to the amount of new growth she is dishonest and lazy for charging you extra.

Definitely get a new stylist and for heaven's sake trust your instincts!!! Girl if I had gotten up out of that chair when that gut feeling hit my hair would be soooooo much healthier, thicker, and longer. If you're uncomfortable with self relaxing, interview more stylists and pick one that has knowledge, respect, and loves your hair. Hope it goes well. (Did I mention get a new stylist???) ;)

ITA with all the other ladies. You should not have to pay your hard earned money to be insulted by an uneducated stylist. Either find another stylist or try self relaxing if you feel comfortable enought to do so. I had terrible experiences with salons once I became educated about hair care and started stretching relaxers. My new stylist is actually my old one...my mother!:D

I tried self-relaxing years ago and I know I can't do it. Anytime I have a problem with a stylist I just start asking around to try and find a new one. I finally have one that I trust that doesn't complain about me going 12 weeks. If you just got a relaxer, now's the best time to start looking. Have the new person just start with a wash-n-set and see how it goes from there. I hope you're able to find someone you can trust.

Your "stylist" has shown a total lack of respect and professionalism:mad: She will eventually sabotage your hard work and claim it's your fault because you didn't get your hair relaxed every 4-6 weeks:eek:
If you don't feel up to self relaxing, then start the search for a new stylist now. Once you find this person, state your goals. You may have to repeat yourself the first few times, but your hair is worth it!

I also think the burning is deliberate!!!

Yep, move on.

DITTO! It's not gonna do anything but get worse. Your hair is gonna be long AND thicker after a while, how is she gonna handle that? She gonna charge you more?!

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm torn. Yeah, she's a pain sometimes but for some reason I feel like I shouldn't just leave. She's been doing my hair a LONG time. I know, I know, so what, right?

I do believe there's a little hateration going on which is crazy because my hair's only average length. It is really hard for me to believe that she is burning the ish outta my hair on purpose....

I'm going to take your suggestions and ask around for other stylists....just in case we can't resolve our 'issues.'

We're going to have a talk asap and if she does it again.....I'm most definitely out!

And who am I kidding? I'm not going to self relax....:perplexed

Yes, I would fire here. My friend did my last relaxer and everything came out nicely.

This is exactly the Thread I needed to read. I'm having the same exact conflict after getting my hair relaxed today. First of all, I brought my own relaxer (phyto which I will be using again!!). She and the owner proceeded to tell me how Phyto is the same as Affirm Sesitive, Dry and Itch Scalp, and that they have used Phyto before but that it was under a different name. I found this interesting because when I told her I was going to try it, she said she had never heard of it before.

While putting the relaxer in she made alot of comments about how she didn't know if she liked the way it was going on and how it would leave calcium deposits on my hair. She too said that I shouldn't have waited so long for my relaxer. This was my first stretch and only stretched to 8 weeks. Anyway, after hours of waiting she finished it and it looked good, but then she had the nerve to charge me $65 and I had brought my own relaxer!! This was after she attempted to charge me $85 but I reminder her that I had brought my own product.

Sorry to hijack your thread, but I'm ticked off too. I think that you need to definitely get a new stylist! I know it feels bad because they work the psychological aspect on us, by making us feel as though they're our friends and that we're all in this together....but we're NOT!! They each got $65 of our money and we are walking away with doubt. We need to have a breaking up w/ our stylist support group. Good luck and keep us posted w/ your decision.

you need to get a friend to apply your relaxers at home for you and then take it from there. that hairstylist is wrong for making all those comments and then charging you extra on top of it.

Hey girlie, girlie.

My solution, go natural :lachen: (j/k)

You have gorgeous hair. I think you need to ask around and find a stylist that understands true haircare.

Hey DG
You should either try self-relaxing or changing your hairdresser!!!

What's up Pammy? I'm actually considering going natural but not if I have to chop my hair off... We'll see. I didn't realize you were natural.

Dang, did I miss Z turning 1 or was that a while ago? Thanks for the hair compliment. I'm doing a weight loss challenge w/ Jai so I won't have a phat ***....

Oh no, she didn't leave it on for hours. But I waited about 45 min just ti sit in her chair and then it took about 1hr 30 min for her to base my scalp and then I waited some more for her to actualy apply the relaxer. Let's just say my appt was at 12:30 and I got out of there it was 6:oopm. I hate spending my Sat's in the salon.

Sounds like it may get worse for you there. She may even ruin your hair. She sounds like she is trying to call attention to herself by loud talking how she "TRANSFORMS" your hair with her relaxer. If she is taking too long working it through she may even overprocess you.

If you do decide to self relax there are great tips here. Many of us self relaxers have tips posted. Southerngirlz has one, I have one, there are so many ladies here with great techniques that you would need to tailor one to suit yourself.

Personally I think its a good idea everyone learns to care for their own hair , including relaxing. That way one can avoid the sarcastic and sometimes rude comments from the hairstylists. I truly dislike going into a salon. In fact I havent been to one in at least 4 or 5 years. I cant take the long waits and nonstop gossip.

My last relaxer was for my wedding in Nov 03. My stylist is trying to get me to texturize and I'm so tempted when the weather's warm and I want to wear my hair straight. But I'm going to try to hold out.

Girl, Z's bday was in August. But mine is Sunday.

You and Jai are going to be doing the darn thing. I need to join you guys.

NEW STYLIST PERIOD! :D Whether it's you or another one... But if you really feel like you can do a self relaxer, I guess it's an okay idea. :ohwell:

DG, girl I am going to send you a compass..........................................

SO YOU CAN FIND A NEW STYLIST:lol:

She has some nerve to charge you all that money (even after you brought your own product) and then try to put you on blast about YOUR hair. If you paying her your hard earned money, you shouldn't have to take that. I know you have been going to her for a while and may feel some loyalty to her, but it seems as she doesn't have your best interest at heart. And the fact that you asked us what to do def. means that you are bothered by it.......if she sabotages your progress and hard work you will be more bothered, so I think you should follow your first mind......
