Is there anyone here who does there own highlites? I was inspired by curlysbun's hair

I don't know if I'd try it myself (probably not), but I still want to know how it's done. And how do you retouch? The whole head again or pick the already highlited strands? How?

My stylist does my highlights about every 6 to 8 months or so. Now that I have many of them, I probably will wait longer. He retouches the already-highlighted strands and adds more if I want because with time, they darken up a bit and become less noticeable. HTH!!

Hey there... I have my highlights done at the salon. For the chunkier highlights they highlighted the hair in larger sections with foil. I dont think that I could trust myself to highlight my own hair

For the retouch, I am not sure how it can be achieved since I have two different colors in there but I think there is a way...i was just gonna grow the color out but now i am curious too! (about the retouch)

I do my own at home. I've been doing them myself for the past several years. I use the same frosting cap that I used the first time I did it. For me, it's really simple. I use the same holes to pull hair thru. This enables me to remain consistent in placing my highlights.

HTH.

TsAngel, could you give me more details? What does the cap look like? How do you go about putting the hair through? How do you mix the color? How do you do the lifting process?

Is there any way to only highlite the already highlited strands. If I wanted to grow my hair really long, but keep the same color highlites, if my stylist kept adding more, wouldn't I eventually have like...too many? Or is it even practical to grow your hair from short to long keeping the same highlites?

ahh......so it does seem possible that you could basically just get the already highlited strands. I was confused because I read in sophisticate's that because it is very difficult to just highlite the already highlited strands, usually the whole head is done over. Thanks for clearing that up.

lunalight, if you're not getting extremely frustrated with me, can I ask you a few more questions

If your hair is curly, do you come in with it straightened for highlite application? Or when you come, do they shampoo your hair for you and straighten if they need to? Also, how much did your application cost? (I know it would differ, but I just want an idea) and do you think that the same method for highilting only the previous highlited strands could be applied if I had more than 1 color in my hair? Also, what shampoo/condition do you use to keep up the color?

My hair is relaxed and pretty straight when Icome in but I know that folks w/ curly hair get highlights when their hair is curly. My stylist charges $35 dollars for them but he is cheap cause he's in the 'hood! Not sure about highlight touchups cause Ive always added new ones when I go...

I forgot to add...I dont use products to keep up my color although I should because they darken rather quickly. When my hair is freshly washed and/or after a touch up (relaxer), they are very light blonde and pop out....when I have a lot of leave-in or oils on my hair, they are almost auburn...

I could never be frustrated w/you mama...this board has been a lifesaver for me...Im glad to return the favor to those who can benefit from my little bit of knowledge....

Sorry for the delay....

It is a frosting cap. Most BSS cary them for like $1-$2. It comes with a little tool that looks like a crochet needle. (Scary but I take my time). The cap has small holes that allow you to pull hair thru (very carefully). I use the same cap, using the same holes and 98% of the time I can pull thru the same pre highlighted strands. My hair is longer than what the cap will hold so I wrap the hair that I don't want colored (the hair that hanging down below the cap) w/saran wrap and tuck another layer of saran wrap just underneath the cap around the nape and over ears kind of looks like a drape.

I use Karizma. But I'm thinking of switching to T&T next time, if they have a blonde shade.

I follow the directions in the box. When I go to rinse. I with cap still on 2x and shampoo 1x. Then remove cap and wash 2x and then proceed with my normal routine.

I am very blessed that it always turns out on point.

HTH
