Who cuts their own hair?

I need a cut, but I am always scared when I get a cut because
1. All the use of heat - the stylists don't seem to know how to do a simple trim unless the hair is straight.
2. All the hair I lose laying on the ground. I lose hair from the blowdryer and hair from the trim, and it seems to gather in a huge hairy halo on the ground.

So I'm wondering, who trims their own hair without the split ender? How do you know what to remove? Do you get it bone straight before you trim? Any of you a 4 and don't need to straighten to trim?

But if you do that, how do you know if you are cutting split ends or not? I don't want to cut my ends if they aren't split?

split ends are usually the unruly ends that stick up, and they seem to be a little bit lighter than the rest of your hair. plus its really hard to dectect them when they're all over your head. i just have my mom help when its time to trim the back of my head.

You could try "dusting," trimming individual hairs that are split. It takes longer but it's worth it if you don't want to snip *all* of your ends off. Or you could wait longer inbetween trims. I usually wait around 3 months. I started using hair grease on the ends of my hair and they feel soft. If my ends don't feel like crap when March comes up, then I'll hold off of the trim as long as I can. Do you use Vaseline on your ends like the other members do?

The problem is that I don't know how to tell what split ends are. My family has no clue either. My hair during the summer tends to look as if it has been highlighted with mixes of brown and black all over the hair. Now, it looks all black, because it is very moisturized so I don't have "lighter" strands. I can't tell what sticks up and what doesn't, because a lot of my hair is natural (i'm transitioning), and my products make my hair stay down.

I got my last trim around July, and I think I am due for one now. It's just that I don't want to worry about a scissors happy stylist or possibly have my hair heat damaged to get a trim.

I started the vaseline challenge about two weeks ago, and I really like it even though I haven't done it every single day.

A split end is Literally split. You will see the hair shaft (single strand) split in 2 or 3 times. Together split ends tend to look real dry and straggly whatever do. You should notice a slight difference in strand health at the ends as opposed to the entire shaft.
