Maybe you should try a hot oil treatment with the olive oil instead of leaving it on your dry hair and stop using the grease on your scalp for a few days and see what happens

try to add some tea trea oil when you wash. or try washing more often...but the tea tree oil should help:)

Keiron,

Can you please list the products that you use and your hair regimen. You might be using a product that doesn't agree with your scalp.

Wash your hair regularly (dandruff shampoo w/zinc or coal tar)
Massage your scalp 1-2 a times a day
Oil your scalp as often as you need

Hi Keiron

On consulting my "bible of remedies", Prescription for Nutritional Healing I see that Balch and Balch (authors) explain that...

"Dandruff is caused by dysfunctional sebaceous glands in the scalp. When these glands secrete abnormally, the scalp may form scales that may itch and burn."

They suggest you consult your doctor for dandruff treatment and warn against over-the-counter ointments saying they can do more harm than good. Then as usual, they recommend supplements that can help. Again imagine what follows below to be a three-column table with the "-" being the dividing lines. The column headings are Supplement, Suggested Dosage, Comments respectively.

NUTRIENTS
Very Important

Kelp tablets - 5 tablets daily - Supplies needed minerals especially iodine for better hair growth and healing of scalp

Unsaturated fatty acids - As directed on label - Primrose oil and salmon oil help to relieve pain and inflammation

Vitamin B complex plus extra Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) - 100 mg twice daily with meals - Use high stress formula

Vitamin E - 400 IU and up - For improved circulation

Zinc lozenges - 5 tablets dissolved in mouth daily for 1 week - Protein metabolism depends on zinc. The scalp is mainly protein

Important
Vitamin A and beta carotene - Up to 20,000 IE daily - Helps prevent dry skin. Aids in healing of tissue.

Helpful
Lecithin - 3 times daily - Protects the scalp and strengthens cell membranes of the scalp and hair."

I agree with Zoya about not using grease on the scalp for a few days. The myth that "if you didn't put grease on the scalp you'd get dandruff" was preached to me as a kid till it became gospel. Then someone out of the blue told me the opposite. Disbelieving such a "ridiculous" theory, I tried it, just to prove the theory wrong. Took a while to get get used to having no grease on my scalp. But a few days later, I was doing OK. I even washed my hair and resisted the temptation to put grease on my scalp, and to my surprise I didn't itch or get dandruff. It's as if my sebaceous glands took over to show me they can do well without any help from me. And I have never gone back. That was about 15 years ago and I'm pleased to say I'm still going strong with no dandruff to report.

I have had dry scalp for years, and the only thing that I have found that works for me is this stuff called top brass. you have to get the kind in the blue and white tube cause it has some kind of medicine in it. It is cooling to the scalp it doesn't smell and it doesn't weigh the hair down. This has been a God send cause for years even when I wash my hair after I dry it I still have flakes and I have tried all types of products and diet changes. Hope this helps.

thanks to all and this is my hair regimen that i use for whoever asked me! lol

i wash my hair with la keir shampoo and condtionor set.
i grease scalp with olive oil
i use africa`s best hair mayonaise and the shea butter/ta tree moisurizer and then i use water and the ORS lock and twist gel that contains nothink but cocconut milk and thats it.

I had a dandruff problem also for years

I started to rinse my hair daily and I wash it more often
The dandruff problem can be caused by a dry scalp so try to rinse it with water daily

i saw that some nody else said sulfur 8 which i am currently using. it works but the smell is HORRIBLE! try the braid spray. it works just as good but you don't have to worry about the smell as much

Vinegar rinses should help. It always calm, refresh and balance my scalp.

According to a book about natural remedies tea tree (as mentioned) and rosemary should be good.

It also mention using apple juice (or lemon juice). Massage into scalp- leave 10 minutes and wash the hair. Repeat 2-3 times a week.

I had this horrible problem a while back. What I need you to do is look at the ingredients of your products...I'll wait...Does it list Urea? Urea causes dandruff. It's highly toxic at certain tempertures. Alot of "our" hair products contain Urea because it gives the products a looong shelf life.

My personal story... I had huge flakes of dandruf that just wouldn't go away....I was mad as hell...I was like "what's causing this madness?". So, I decided to do a little research on "our" hair products...Guess what I found out? My favorite afro comb out spray was giving me dandruff! So I stopped using it and started using plain water for my comb outs. I shampooed with a dandruff shampoo and started using olive oil. After a while I got over it. My scalp is as fresh and clean as a new born babys'. I don't need to "grease" my scalp neither. I just do my weekly hot oil and I'm good to go for a whole week! Try to use all natural products, you may be allergic to the chemicals that your hair products contain... Just because a product says Organic in the title doesn't mean it's organic...

If it is a reocurring problem and if it like moves on to the forehead or ears, it might be psorias. My cousin and my grandmother are both afflicted with this pain. A dermatologist might be required.

I think you are having your FLAKE problems due to the oils and hair grease on your scalp. Don't put anytihng on your scalp. That is what causing it. You scalp produce enough oil to maintain. Its the ends of our hair that needs the oils not the scalp. Try for a week by not putting anything on your scalp..and see.

I agree, I have an itchy scalp (no flakes). My doctor said not to put anything on an itchy scalp, the best thing is to wash regularly with shampoos with zinc pyrithone or coal tar eg Keracare dry itchy scalp shampoo, although I sometimes follow it up with a moisturising shampoo because they can be harsh.

I find that sometimes if I don't rinse the conditioner off of my daughters scalp really good she get flakes on her scalp.

I heard ACV rinses will nip this in the bud. Do it everyday for a week and you should be flake free.

Hey, since now I think, dream, talk and live for hair 24/7

, I seem to be stumbling on hair-related sites all the time. Anyway, I came across Ecco Bella Hair and Scalp Therapy which seems to address the problem of itchy scalp and dandruff. I assume it'd be gentle on sensitive skin. (They also have a Shampoo and Conditioner.) Perhaps that might help? (I'm gravitating towards natural products now, thanks to Mindymouse and Sithembile.

I have used all sorts of shampoos and home remedies. What has finally helped was:
1) shampooing twice a week, no ifs, ands, or buts

2) Using a pre-shampoo treatment. I vary these.
The 'milk' treatment, discussed in another thread has been very helpful.

Also, I've been using the cayenne pepper and vodka treatment. That really took care of it for a while.
(Be careful not to scratch before using this one. It stings!)
