Which relaxer to choose

I had my first consultation with Komaza at the end of August and it seems the reason for my breakage is severely under-processed hair from my relaxer. I tried to transition but its just not for me. So I am looking for a new relaxer and this is were I need your help. I'll give you some info about my hair, I have a mix of fine and very thick 4 a/b hair and it is normal to high porosity. TIA

A lot of people have had success with Linange relaxers on this board. If you do a search, you can find several threads on this brand. If you live in New York or Miami, you can find it in the stores (if you know where to look), otherwise you can find it on Amazon.

ETA: I myself use Paul Mitchell relaxer, which I love, but may be problematic for people to try because:

  1. You cannot find it for purchase online from any reputable source to DIY (believe me, I have tried!)
  2. Since you cannot DIY, you have to find a salon where the service is offered and done by people of color (the last time I had a white person do my relaxer was 20 years ago--and I am still traumatized by the experience :nono:). The girl that does me now is Puerto Rican with a family like mine (full of mutts with a whole range of hair textures), so she does a good job.
  3. Because of the above two, the service is expensive (about $150, including blowdry, flatiron and tip), which gives me even more incentive to stretch my relaxers to every three months or more.
So yeah, I thought I would mention what I use, but I know not very many folks go for it, but you never know. :ohwell:

How about NAKED divachyk used this a few days ago and should be able to give her review of this. I'm not sure is there is a thread on it but i have no expertise with relaxers and so responses to your question will surely help me too.

I have fine hair, i used DE conditioning relaxer two weeks ago and i think it may be too strong for my hair type so i may switch to the one for sensitive scalp.

I use Mizani butter blends..the newest one claims to have better straightening abilities. I like it.

PureSilver be careful with sensitive scalp relaxers. They are gentler on the scalp/skin but they are harsher on the hair. Sensitive scalp relaxers use a different chemical than regular relaxers.

I use the cheapie optimum relaxer in the red box and love it. I'm bout to try the Elasta QP one though.

Can you suggest a better one for me please. My relaxer came out bone straight with the DE conditioning relaxer, also it was a virgin relaxer, seems kinda strange to me. I was not under processed for my first relaxer and thats one of the reasons i'm thinking the relaxer is too strong for me. Also my hair feels very fragile. ManeStreet soonergirl JudithO

I have coarse resistant hair and I relaxed with Nairobi regular relaxer and it got my 3 inches of new growth bone straight. I took it down a tad bit further and it corrected some under processing I had from last year. This is my new favorite relaxer.

loveafterwar how does it treat your scalp and where can i purchase Nairobi for the best price. I'm a 4b. Also is it ok to switch from the DE conditioning relaxer to Nairobi, i read that switching relaxers can be dangerous because they are made up of different chemicals and compounds.

I have been salon relaxed with many variations of Design Essentials. Most recently, Design Essentials Time Released. My hair was not performing well, thus I changed salons. The stylist suggested NAKED by Essations because Design Essentials is very strong. So far, I'm loving the way my hair is performing. The change has been good thus far. I hope I'm still singing this song in the weeks and months to come.

I have to base my scalp really well because I'm sensitive. I used their comfort zone gel and I didn't burn at all. I bought the introductory kit from ensley beauty supply online which came with the relaxer, shampoos, conditioners, hairdress, and foam wrap for $47. If u want just the relaxer the 15oz was only 9.99 I did buy an extra tub because I wanted to ensure I had enough

Linange Shea Butter Relaxer or Mizani Butter Blends HG System. Both are lye relaxers

Sent from my iPhone using LHCF

I just use ORS relaxer in regular. I can't use lye relaxers. They burn me and leave my hair under processed. I don't base my scalp when I use ORS and I have never burned. I've been using this relaxer for at least 6 years.

I felt like this relaxer was expensive, lol, 7.99, but jeez you ladies pay a ton to relax. I stretch my relaxer about 3 to 5 months just out of laziness. I have never had a relaxer at the salon.

heirloom what relaxer were you using? Was your hair under processed because you were texlaxing or adding oil to it? Is your goal to be bone straight? I don't think you can get suggestions from others on line you need to have someone look at your hair and give you specific options that will line up with whatever else is going on with your hair. Can you ask Komazza for suggestions?

I used to roll with ORS but either my hair or the formula changed. I went from regular to super and after a while it still wasn't laying my hair right. A lot of people on here and you tube swear by it but I realized that many are not trying to relax it straight so the change didn't bother them.

I use silk element mild in the jar. It gets my hair really straight I have coarse 4b hair. My sister uses linnage. She gets a lot of texture but not quite texlax.

bklynbornNbred I was using the dark and lovely super, I didn't add anything to it and yes the goal is bone straight hair

I used to swear by ORS no lye, but every time I switch to it (the only no-lye I use) if I fear my scalp may burn from scratching leading up to relaxing, my hair feels like straight straw-- even after clarifying.

But, it offers me a good relaxing process. I just hate the way my hair behaves and feels after washing it out.
Linage has been the best, doesn't always get me bone straight, but it doesn't smell, and burns only after a looong time. My hair always feels straight, SOFT, and with body. I love it.

Hawaiian silky is good too. Gets my hair bone straight and soft. Smells like relaxer though and burns a little faster than Linage. It's my second fave, just base well when using it.

I have 4b hair, BSL, sensitive scalp.

No one ever talks about this brand any more but vitales life and body relaxer gave me beautiful results and it doesn't burn. Hawaiian silky mild burned me. If I ever go back to relaxers I would use vitale's relaxer.

I think your best bet is to do a long stretch - like get some braids or twists for the winter until the springtime and in the meantime try to find a stylist you can talk to before you get to point of doing your hair. There are threads on here about how to take care of your hair in braids/twists.

You definitely need to switch brands but I also want you to make sure you actually have enough new growth to justify a chemical treatment (every 6 weeks is too much). If pieces of your hair are underprocessed you may also need to work on your technique. Let someone else that can see the back do your next touch up and corrective to the parts that need it. Then you can practice applying your conditioner as if it was relaxer for at least 10 weeks so that by the time you need another touch up you can self apply.

I used Motions (super) this last time because I didn't want to use ORS again and I didn't like the other options in the store at the time. So far my hair has been great and the relaxer definitely came out better than it has been for a while with the ORS.

Before you make a decision evaluate the other products/steps you are using and see what changes you need to make. Do you need to add moisturizing conditioner? a protein treatment? more deep conditioners? Use indirect heat instead of air drying (my hair hates air drying)? Everyone's hair is different but you can't stick to what you've been doing and what's popular on here isn't always what's best for each individual. I try not to be a product junkie but products changing formulas doesn't help. Once you figure out your holy grail just stick to it for a while. Good luck!

PureSilver loveafterwar. I use the Nairobi "Pamper line" for sensitive scalps, and also use the comfort gel, no scalp problems... I stretch between 18-20 weeks, and it gets me straight. I have fine hair as well...Love this line, will continue to use.

Love, love, love, love Hawaiian Silky with Vitale Revitalizer hard protein as second step. My hair has never looked this good and felt this healthy!!!

I've been in braids since the start of the summer so have lots of new growth to relax. I've watched lots of youtube videos and I'm going to incorporate a protein conditioner before I neutralise now instead of the after I was doing before. I decided to go with lineage
