Which is worst: mineral oil or cones?

the_UnPrettiest_pretty

Beauty IS skin deep.
I was looking at replacing some of my leave-ins and things, and I saw that some of the best leave-ins I have encountered contain mineral oil or cones or both. So, which do you ladies say is worse: mineral oil or cones?

OMIGOSH CONES!!! I'm psycho about cones now, especially since my $$$DR didn't work after about a month or so. I will never do cones again....even so-called organic ones. All of the conditioners I have that have mineral oil work great in my hair and do not keep my oils and other leave-ins from penetrating. My hair stays healthy and silky....think emergencia in my after pic below.:drunk:

Wow. I'm glad I never had the urge to jump on the Aveda bandwagon. I want to try their Anti-humectant cream for flat-ironing, but I think that's about the only thing I will purchase from them. Their just too expensive for me to try out like that.

However, I thought mineral oil would be worse than cones. I think I read somewhere that some cones weren't all that bad. The reason why I am asking is because I looked at the ingredients for my silicon mix, lacio lacio and my NTM silk touch leave-in, and all of them had both. Are they damaging to my hair? I really like lacio lacio and NTM leave-in, but I don't want to purchase them anymore if they may not be really beneficial because of the mineral oil and cones. Anyone else have any input?

thats a tuffy:ohwell:!: I hear cones are bad but mineral oil is dangerous: but I have used products that had either or and worked great: also, I think my heat protecter has a cone & the vaseline I use has mineral oil in it: so I would have to say: i rather have a cone in my hair then mineral oil i think:

I have silicon mix. I looked at the ingredients again, and it has both!! But silicon mix does sooooo good!! How can this be? Do you or would you use it? The next time I get ready to order some Dominican products (which mostly all of them seem to have one, the other, or both), I think I will try Salerm 21 this time around.

I can't get over this. Some of the best products my hair loves has these ingredients in them. How can you stop using something that your hair loves, but you feel it can be damaging to your hair overall?

In all honesty I believe that only your hair can tell you that. I know that it has been said that both is bad but in moderation I can use both wit no problems. I do clarify often though so that may help, I am also going with the last is more theory so I don't use alot of either.

Ok. Thanks ladies. This is a dilemma for me. I love those products, but I really don't know how they can be affecting my hair. But I will contine to use them as before until my hair tells me that it's time for a change. I've often said that your hair will talk to you when it needs to tell you something. So, I think I will just go with the flow for now until it starts talking to me.

Ditto! I use both cones and mineral oil, not my my scalp though just my ends. I love my Silicon mix (cones) and Amla Oil (mineral oil). Just use it in moderation and make sure to lightly clarify every now and then.

I think your hair should probably be the judge of that. Mineral oil is a no no for my hair. relaxers have a little bit, but in a leave in...:nono: My hair will break right on off.

Cones can add buildup on my hair so I just take care not to use much of them.

Some people can use both and grow hair down to their butts*lucky ducks*

Only conditioners with mineral oil or cones work best in my hair. Ive been using KeraCare for several months or so and we know that they're full of both. But, my hair likes it and has no problem.:ohwell:

I don't think either one is necessarily bad. It's an individual thing. You have to see how they work on your hair. For a long time, I avoided cones entirely. But now I will use certain types of cones occasionally and it's okay. Occasionally being the important word there. Mineral oil is a no-no for me right now, though. But I know it works well in some folk's hair. So again, you just gotta let your hair tell you what works and what doesn't.

cichelle, what types of leave-in conditioners are you using that contains cones? Your hair is beautiful and I simply adore it.

I say use what your hair loves! You say that your hair loves the products w/mineral oil & cones, so why stop?

For years I didn't use conditioners w/mineral oil, (I rarely used leave in cond/moisturizers - only mousse & a cone). Last year I gave up cones for a while & my hair revolted....I started using a deep cond w/a cone in the winter...not so much now- to pacify my hair:spinning: & started using condish w/mineral oil after reading some hits on this site - ie. Emergencia, silicon mix, Le Kair. My hair seems happy. I only use leave ins w/cones if I am going to heat style, which is rare.

cones - plastics, generally better heat protectant
Mineral oil - petroleum product, generally a better lubricant

Just my $.02

I agree with all the ladies who've said listen to your hair. My hair says no mineral oil though! So I don't mess with it...It tends to slow my growth. One of my stable brands, Pureology, uses cones. But my hair loves it and it loves my hair right back. I still try to limit heavy cone usage to days when I'm flat-ironing. That's when I need them the most because it helps get my hair straighter. But the molecular weight of that mineral oil is a no-no for me.:naughty:

Mineral Oil is the worst. It strips my hair and leaves it dry.

Cones...it depends. I like some cones. All they really do is coat your hair cuticle. Overtime, you can get build up if you use it too often.

I use products with cones. My hair dislikes mineral oil ANYTHING.

Thanks. I think I am going to do what my hair says I can do. I got paranoid about using those products with those ingredients in them and thought I might have been doing harm to my hair by continuing to use them. They're actually products I can use that my hair has no problem with, and I think my hair actually likes them. So, since my hair hasn't given me any warning signals yet, I think I will continue to keep using them. That is, until my hair starts complaining to stop using them.
