I posted this in response to the other thread about BSS's I want everyone to know how Sally Beauty Supply does business. This is why I am no longer shopping there.

I usally go to Asian beauty supply stores. Lucky for me it isn't too much of a hike to Fordham Road in the Bronx where they are two big ones.

I have never really liked Sally's and I am swearing off of them officially after Saturday. They always try to push a particular product on you and it isn't based on whether it is good for your hair or not. It is usually a certain brand that is popular that month that they have been told to push by their managers. And they are not experts. The people at the Sally's on Fordham approach you, follow you around and give you unsolicted advice. I hate Sally's.

You know after typing out that episode I actually went to the website to look for a place to complain but I couldn't find any.

Right now the big thing at Sally's is the crap from the Ion anti frizz line. When I went there in March The sales guy convinced me that this was the best conditioner for my 4a/4b hair and since I had yet to discover LHCF and I had only an idea that a product containig alcohol was bad for my hair, I let that fool who by the way was hispanic with type 1 hair, convince me that I could use this line and he swore up and down that the alcohol in the product was neccessary for my hair type and that people in his family had hair similair to mine ( I doubted it even then but with latino's you never know) and used the ION line with great success.

Needless to say my hair looked like garbage and was even drier after I used it. When I went there again just last Saturday they tried the same line and I was like "Uh huh...not trying to hear it" and I bounced! I hate Sally's

I think the company manufacturs this line or gets a kickback for it. In any event it isn't right to try to sell some thing that might damage someones hair just to make a profit. Especially when they try to represent themselves as "hair experts" when they ARE NOT! I can't remember who posted it but someone said they use to work for the corporate office and that all you needed was to be older than 16. Yet, they make it seem like they are so knowledgeable and they are not. I think it is false advertising to do this. A lot of people take their advice seriously because they do not know any better. I know I use to believe the things they said cuz I didn't know too much about AA hair care. It is one thing to ask for advice and get it...but they actively try to give you unsolicted bad advice and that makes it worse! Buyer's beware!

http://www.sallybeauty.com/shop/product.asp?pf%5Fid=302266&dept%5Fid=1225ION I think the company makes it.

I don't know where you all live. But I've never gotten any assistance from anyone at Sally's. They don't make suggestions or anything. They just stand there, jabbering amongst themselves and wait for you to bring your purchases up to the counter. Then they ask if you found everything okay. That's the extent of my involvement with a salesperson.

That's y i don't shop there.

My complaint with them is that they try to get out of their policies. I've never received advice from them. I have never beento the one on Fordham road though. I usually don't go up that far.

I was thinking the exact same thing. All I get is, can I help you? and usually I know what I want so I dont need any suggestions anyway.

I don't ask for advice for anyone at Sally's. I get product reviews off of this and other sites and know exactly what I want when I go in there.

My only complaints are
1. They do not carry a lot of black hair care products
2. Their prices are higher than some of the Asian BSS.

I try to support black businesses, but why is it that everytime I go into one, they have fewer products--meaning very few choices of styling tools, fewer appliances, higher prices, and the selection of products is scarce or outdated. One store in particular STILL has the original 'Classy Curl' boxes on the shelf! Dust and all.....

Wow, I guess I am one of the fortunte ones. I have no problems with my Sally's down here. Yes they talk amongst themselves, but when you walk in they will greet you and ask if you need help. I also never had a problem with returning supplies or products. They always adhere to their policy and they will even tape the receipt to the supply box so that you don't lose it and can return it. I have even returned things that I have used and just didn't like as long as it was in the 90 days limit.

Me too. I don't shop at Sally's anymore. I go to Beauty Lane. It's this HUGE Asian beauty supply store near my house. They have EVERYTHIING. It's almost as big as a grocery store. I can stay in there for hours!

You should write a letter of complaint to that particular store's management or the corporate office and at least get your money back.

I don't like a pushy sales person no matter where I'm shopping and I would never just take the advice of a sales person with nothing to back up their claims. I'm just naturally suspicious though

I've usually been able to find a lot of higher quality shampoos at grocery stores than at BSS. Now, when I need to get some hair to weave in or for braids, then I usually go to BSS.

This is my usual experience at Sally's.

Except they are usually in the back room jabbering. I could rob them blind if I wanted to... When I'm ready to check out, I normally stand at the end of the aisle, establish eye contact with someone and shriek,
orders.gif
"I'm ready!!!!!"

I feel sorry for the people who come in and ask for advice. I've heard those clerks say some crazy things. "Setting lotion needs alcohol because it makes the hair dry faster." And "Proclaim Coconut Oil will keep your baby's hair from turning (as in turning nappy)."

I think it has a lot to do with the neighborhood. The stores in the Fordham section of the Bronx are plauged by shoplifting and credit card fraud. I don't even know why I go around there period. They treat you like a thief. I mean you have to show I.D to use your Credit card. I hate Fordhmam it is Sooooooo...ghetto but they have the large BSS's. So I put up with it when I want things I can't find around my way.
