So today I went to get my touch up and I was at a new stylist. I havent gotten a touch up since August so there was a lot of new growth. So, I'm sitting in the chair and she's like "wow you have a lot of hair but the curls are so webbed together" and so eventually she asked me what I did with my hair and when I said that I didnt blowdry it she was shocked. She then advised me to blowdry my hair everytime I wash and I'm saying yeah right in my head. Then . . . she tells me to relax every six weeks and I'm thinking "no way!" So nows shes really fustrated with me and before she put in the rollers to do my roller set shes like "do you want me to trim your hair?" I was like no and I lied and told her that my friend was going to do it for me when in actuallity my hair is just uneven and is not split. Finally she says to me "You need to learn how to trust stylists" I was like /images/graemlins/shocked.gifhow am I supposed to trust you when 1. I dont know you and 2. you think everything I do is wrong!
Wow that was longer than I thought it would be but I needed to vent. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Are you going to go to her again?

I hate it when stylists try to pull that BS on people. I wouldnt trust her either after all that she said.

See the thing is that my hair turned out really nice so I might go back, but, not in 6 weeks.

It takes time to trust anyone. /images/graemlins/ohwell.gif For me anyway. I began to trust my stylist after a few months. I do have issues with stylists that want to cut or perm all the time. Also have issues with stylists that dont make suggestions about products and at home regimines.

What did she mean by webbed together? Did you comb out your new growth before going to the hair stylist? Just curious.

Ummm? She tells you to do all of the wrong things and you ARE suppose to trust her? Please that's like having a cheating bf who is perplexed as to why you don't trust him!

Its hard finding a good stylist that you can trust. I know when I found mine I knew I had a good one she even advised me to stop the heat all together and stop playin in my hair so it would grow! when I do go in, she always let me know that I'm doing a great job on my hair, ask me what I'm doing & regimen and tell me to keep doing just that! SHE IS THE ONLY ONE THAT I WILL LET TOUCH & TRIM (SHE ONLY DUST THE HAIR IF I ASK) MY HAIR !!!!!!!!!!

The last really good stylist I had was one my mother found for me when I was a child. My mother told her exactly what to do and how to do it. I thought I found a stylist I could trust this last year but the last time she touched me up I had horrendous breakage so now I am texturizing my own hair. I am tired of having my hair fall out because of a stylist's carelessness.

I started trusting my stylist after a few months, after building a friendship with her. She was the one who advised ne to stop perming my hair every six weeks, and she taught me that I didn't need to trim my hair everytime I got a touch-up. Also, after being on here for I while, I learned about the correct way to do perms and to detangle and stuff. I noticed that my stylist was doing all of that stuff all along.

I like and trust my stylist although she can't style worth diddly/images/graemlins/ohwell.gif, her press is normally done the way I like it and she is not scissor happy. I did let her know what my goals were for my hair from the beginning. So I have been going to since I first grew out my relaxer. I have only let two other people press my hair.

Ehj:

I would not trust this stylist. There are other stylist who are understanding and not money hungry like she is.

I do not like the fact that she was telling you the wrong things to do to your hair. It was all down hill once she noticed that you had alot of hair. She may be a bit jealous (no matter what her hair looks like). Stylists do not like to see you once every few months. They want you in that chair every week for wash/sets and six weeks for touch up. That is totally unnecessary and we all know that. I would not go back to her if I was you. She sounds like a hater. Did she once give you a complement when you were in the salon? I am glad that you did not have her trim your hair. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

NEVER!

I'm with cha on that one. I would eventually stop going to this stylist because she's going to get on your nerve. I know from experience. I now do my own hair.

Never ever ever in life! All the stylists I've been to on a fairly regular basis (years ago) has cut or otherwise damaged my hair. With the exception of the occasional Dominican blowout, I will not set foot into a hair salon again /images/graemlins/frown.gif

Hugs,
Crys

I don't trust any stylist. I do know that I would prefer a male or a long haired female to do my hair though.

My guess is that her newgrowth was entwined together. My new growth does that, if I wait too long to relax, the hairs in the coils twist into each other making it hard to detangle.

yeah, exactly.

It takes me a very long time to trust any stylist. They have to demonstrate their trustworthiness by:
1. treating me with respect and not talking down to me
2. asking me if I want a treatment or trim instead of forcing it on me
3. respecting my opinion when I give them an answer
4. answering my questions honestly (i.e. don't mind sharing techniques and product information with me)
5. NOT TRIMMING TOO MUCH!!!

I had a one to two hour long consultation with my present stylist before choosing her. We had a really good conversation about hair, haircare, products, her beliefs as far as styling and caring for hair and running her salon. I even got to see her do someone else's hair. She was impressed with what I knew, but she did let me know that I would have to trust her on some things. From that conversation, I felt that I could trust her. After my first chemical service, it was confirmed. I love the atmosphere of her shop as well as the way she does my hair. She will have to really do something extreme or leave the city for me to stop going to her. I wish I could afford to start going back every two weeks. I go every six weeks now.

When I was relaxed, I must have tried close to 30 different stylists, and only 1 of them didn't jack up my hair. That's why I became a do-it-yourselfer. Now that I wear my hair natural, I trust stylist even less since Beauty school does NOT teach them how to care for natural hair. The only way I would trust a stylist is if:

2 or 3 other women with long, beautiful and healthy natural hair would recommend her.

I don't blame you for being cautious, ehj. She didn't seem to care as much about your hair's health as she did about what would make it easier for her.

I can relate. I just got my touch-up Monday (I cheated and got it done a week before the end of my first trimester). She gave me a "trim" that now has my hair shorter than it was at the end of summer. She says her own hair is 2" long. She is trying to grow it out. The fact that I've gone to her twice should tell you how difficult it is to find a competent, professional stylist out here.

To answer the question of your thread, I will begin to trust a stylist who is professional and competent. S/He doesn't have to be nice, talkative, trendy, whatever. S/He will have to be health-oriented, on-time, and not prone to jealousy.

you should have told her "I will trust you when I understand the words comming out of your mouth cause what i just heard was nonsense!!!"

Since she is a new stylist and you liked your results maybe you need to LAY DOWN THE PLAN & THE LAW b4 she does your hair next time.

I agree. Go by your gut instinct. Find someone who can help you achieve your goal which is to have strong, healthy long hair. If you don't agree with the stylist then say what's on your mind. If she says you should get a relaxer every 6 weeks then explain to her that you are trying to grow out your hair and you don't feel you can achieve that by doing it that way. It's your hair and if she can't respect your hair wishes then find someone else because she's not worth giving your hard-earned money.

I view a stylist the same as anyone else. I give them my trust once they have earned it. With regard to my hair, that means once they have demonstrated that the health, appearance, and growth of my hair are their priorities (as opposed to their car payment). When they are willing to work with me to help me achieve my goals and not continue to insist that they do things like relax and trim every 6-8 weeks...then I trust them.

Well all of the styles that I am interested in at this point do not require trimming or straightening so I can trust them when it comes to doing that. But for anyother services, no /images/graemlins/nono.gif

NEVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i'm getting my hair cornrowed tomorrow and i'm going to be VERY picky on what she does!
