Hi everybody!
I just recently joined as a member, rather than a guest, and I am actually happy I did. I have one question. After you wash, whether regular shampoo or Co-Wash, when do you comb: before the shower, during the shower, after the shower while wet, or after shower when c :perplexed ompletely dry? How much breakage do you have if you comb while wet or in the shower? :perplexed
TIA

i personally comb while in the shower with the conditioner in my hair.....easier to comb thru....just make sure your hair is well coated w/ conditioner.....

hope this helps

It is so much easier for me to comb in the shower after I have conditioned, but I also comb once I get out, but only after I put a detangler or a leave in on my hair. If I try to comb (out of the shower) with nothing on my hair, I get a lot of shedding.

I would also comb my hair while in the shower with conditioner all over... or sometimes I'll just let the water from the shower pour down on my head and start combing from there.

How much breakage? No breakage at all when i'm combing under running water....but with conditioner it's just a few strands

I GENTLY comb just before I wash, just to remove any tangles. I also comb after I've rinsed the conditioner and after apply my leave-in/detangler. I've tried comb under running water and I've tried combing with conditioner in, but I've found that my hair is most cooperative when it's damp (not soaking) and full of leave-in.

I comb my hair when I apply the conditioner so I can distribute it evenly through the hair. Yes, i do see hair in the comb. Yesterday, I did a C.W. with motions cpr and I didn't get much hair in my comb this time. It pretty much goes up and down for me. I am in the process of trying to get my shedding/breakage under control. Also, after I put the leave-in condition I comb through my hair.

I just recently started washing and conditioning my hair in 6 loose braids. After applying conditioner to each section, I comb thru. With this method, there are like 10 strands of hair in the tub as opposed to a handful.

I comb the conditioner thru in the shower if I have a great deal of new growth. Then, I comb my leave-in products thru after applying them to towel dried hair. Then, I may comb my hair again later after its air dried to keep it from being crunchy/stringy looking before putting it up. I voted for a combination of the methods.

sometimes I comb in the shower, but I always comb after applying my leave-ins and then again to put into a bun.

I usually comb after I wash out the conditioner and put in my leave-ins. I use a wide tooth comb and gently start at the bottom and work my way up. I usually air dry in a bun, so this makes sure my roots dry straight.

I tried to comb in the shower once, but it didn't work for me.

Well, typically I got into the practice of combing my hair while it's wet after washing/conditioning. But I used to do it while the conditioner was in my hair so I may go back to this as I've had a really hard time finding a good detangler.

I am so slow when it comes to combing so while the conditioner is in may give me a jump because I still really like combing it afterwards.

Thank you ladies for your responses. Bumping for more responses; I am always eager to pick up on more advice.

I answered "combination"... I gently detangle from the roots with fingers before washing, then IF my hair can tolerate it, I will comb in the shower with running water and conditioner. I usually need even more detangling after the wash, so I spray on my detangling leave-in (EQP H-two :), wait until my hair is about 70% dry before I comb again. And ALWAYS with a wide tooth comb (Jilbere shower comb :). For some reason, my hair does not tolerate wet combing too well. But I am still working on building strength, so one day I'll get there!

Welcome to the board :) .

I voted Combination of 2: during cond. wash/rinse and when hair is dry. I hardly have any breakage in the shower, but all the tangles are not out with my wide shower comb. And my hair breaks the most when it is just wet because that is when it is weakest. So, after is has dried some I complete my detangling.

i comb ususally just after washing out the conditioner cuz my hair likes get tangled at that point (no matter what the conditioner is). If I ever comb it dry, it's after adding moisturizer

I comb before washing and after all the conditioner is rinsed out. I could never comb through my hair with conditioner in it and not have A WHOLE LOT of hair loss :ohwell:

I had major breakage during my transition due to dry combing and trying to detangle before a wash...so now I only comb during the wash with condish on, and after my leave-ins/creams have been applied to detangle and style.

I let the conditioner soak a little and then I gently comb while it's still in. I used to rinse the conditioner out and comb under the water but my strands are too fine to handle the weight of the water.

I go for months w/o using a comb because my hair is in twists and braids for months on end. But when I'm wearing my hair out, I comb it all the time. I always comb it to style; I comb it during the wash (I wash in braids and undo, comb, rebraid during each step of the wash), and then once I'm done, I either airdry in the braids and comb later after it dries into a style after drenching it with S Curl, or I apply S Curl to the towel dried hair immediately after a wash and comb it into a style. I braid at night and baggy and use the moisture from baggying to comb in the AM.

So yes, my choice was "combination" and my hair is usually drenched with a product when I comb: shampoo, conditioner, running water, or S Curl.

During conditioner or after while still wet (towel dried) works best for me, since there's a lot of slip.

I comb my hair before applying oil. Then shampoo, deep condition, and airdry. Then I won't comb my hair until it is completely dry. I don't think my hair is strong enough to be combed while wet, just thinking of it almost makes me cringe.

Then my hair stays up in a bun or clip all week. I finger comb during the week until I'm ready to wash again.

I attempted the no comb method but my hair was getting too tangled. I can go longer between combings when freshly TUd, like now.

I attempted the wet combing method but my hair doesn't like being combed while wet unless it's TU day. I go to the salon for my TUs so they comb while wet but my hair seems okay by that because it's easier to comb through at that time.

Typically speaking, I'll shampoo...condition...apply leave-in...air dry...then comb when completely dry. I detangle with the fabulous tangle teezer! Then I'll seal.

I will comb maybe 1x or 2x mid-week with a wide tooth comb to keep the tangles down. With mid-week combing, I comb after I have moisturized and sealed. I start from the ends and work to the roots and I'm very gentle.
