I am guilty of this from time to time...but I am going to say it. How many oils are we going to add to our hair. Didn't we discover that too much is harmful. Especially if your are not a frequent washer.I remember once I did MTG, w/WGO, with EVOO at one point in one day (when I first started). The sad part about it is that I know I am not the only one because I read it before. I am a frequent washer and never really thought about it, but after reading someone's post I thought about that very question. When is too much too much for the hair?

It can be one oil or 3, but when my hair is all greasy, shiny, and slick feeling, i know I have overdone it! I remember the very first time I used WGO, I didn't know how powerful that stuff was. I had done a rollerset and I just kept squirting it in my hands, then rubbed it all in my hair. Yeah my hair was VERY shiny, but greasy and slick feeling. (think there is a pic in my album). It was already curly from the rollerset, but then it ended up being toooo curly. Had to go and wash it all out and start over again.

But I usually only use 1 at a time since I know how heavy even 1 can be if overused...

When your hair feels greasy and weighed down thats when your using too much oil.

I mainly use coconut oil which is enough for me, I started using it late last year, I was using way too much, through trial and error I learned that less is definitely more when it comes to certain oils.

Oils are very rich, so I really dont see the point when some people use more than one oil at a time, isnt one enough???

I don't use any other oils when I'm using MTG, but I was just curious, how exactly are oils harmful? I'm asking b/c I thought that mineral oil was the harmful one since it can clog pores and over time make hair dry, and that essential oils were good and wouldn't build-up. TIA.

When it is weighed down and greasy (as was mentioned), sometimes changing color (not in a good way), looks funny, strands clump together, hair doesn't move like it should, grease spots are left on clothes and furniture, hair is picking up lint, bugs and whatnot, it's too much.

Yeah, like the other ladies said when your hair is weighed down and heavy or sticky feeling. When I first started using castor oil, I was heavy handed, I had no idea how strong this stuff was! It was heavy on my hair for 2 days! But then after that my hair was so so soft and tangle free I learned to gauge how much to put on my hair and it has since been a product staple for me.

Re: When is too much oil....Too much oil?

Good question. When I went to the salon this weekend, the stylist told me I am using too much oil on my hair. She said that oil can get heavy and won't always wash out. After my wash and deep condition, she said she could still see traces of oil in my hair. I thought that was odd, but now I'm wondering, is there a such thing as too much oil? I wear my hair in buns (mostly), so it's very hard to tell if my hair is weighed down, but I usually only put the oil on my scalp and ends.
