When do you get worried about the breakage/shedding?

Every time I come away with a strand of hair on my hand, I'm thinking "well no wonder I'm not seeing any growth, my hair keeps coming out." And every time I get more and more convinced that after I stretch and keep cowashing and moisturizing and not using heat and doing all this no manipulation walking around in a ponytail all damn day, by the time I'm ready to straighten my hair again it's STILL going to be the same length. And then I cry and eat a half gallon of ice cream

:bangdesk:

At what point does the hair that comes out become too much for the hair that stays on? How much breakage or shedding do you allow to occur before you get concerned? How much is enough to affect progress?

Shedding is okay. Shed hair (with the bulb on the end) is old hair that is falling out to make way for a new strand of hair - that's a good thing.

Broken hair though - that's a bad thing, and without knowing what your hair is 'missing' - it's hard to fix.

Heat? Chemicals? Mechanical Damage? Split Ends? Dry? Lacking Protein?

I would actually say at this point I am getting more shed hairs than broken hairs. The bad part is I am beginning to notice the shed hairs are tangling and making tiny knots in the rest of my hair.

:yep: Means you need to detangle more - get the shed hairs out faster, so that they don't get a chance to knot up with the rest of your hair. I assume you wear your hair 'unbound' most of the time?

My hair started acting up (mainly breakage) after this last stretch of 13 weeks. Thinking I was doing the healthy thing, stretching my relaxer, no heat, cowashing 2x wk, wearing a half wig everyday for lo mani regimen, etc, etc. I noticed my hair started breaking around wk 11 (despite using lite protein). Plus, it looked a little scraggly before I left for the salon, but I chalked it up to shrinkage. Got to the domin salon and saw (and was told) that I'd had alot of breakage and was stretching for too long (my hair is super coarse). Very disappointing. So, I'd say pay attention to it right away as soon as you notice (breakage) and try to determine what your hair needs (moisture vs protein). I still haven't penpointed what happened to mine other than 'needing' a relaxer, but I suspect a heavier protein was probably needed.

Hmmm I noticed that four strands came out of my hair today at work that had the bulb thing, this is not normal, but I see that it happens because of normal shedding. I mean to be honest if a strand broke apart I never really examined the tip, but I see bulbs
