What relaxers have you used that didn't cause breakage or shedding?

I can't remember any relaxer that I have used in my life time that didin't cause breakage or shedding. Not a little, but a decent amount, from nickel size to silver dollar. Is this normal? If you've used a relaxer that didn't cause breakage or shedding anytime during or after application, please list it. Also list the strength, your hair type, and if it relaxed your hair bone straight. I believe this is the reason my hair is thinning among other things. List relaxers that have caused breakage/shedding too so I'll know to stay away from them. I'm ready for a change, but don't know what type of relaxer to choose. Thanks ladies, I really need your help.

Since I switched from a Regular to Mild relaxer (about 3 years ago) I think thats contributed to less shedding. Its hard to say if thats the cause though.... because since Ive joined the boards and learned to take care of my hair, that has undoubtedly played a role in any decreased shedding/breakage, you know?

Right now Im using a mild, no lye, gentle treatment salon relaxer.... and its been really easy on my hair. I dont even know the name of it, but the container reads Johnson Products. I (think) I have very little breakage/shedding.

I use phyto 1/11 and I have no shedding - my hair is getting so much body and strength. No heat has helped tremendously as well. Hair type is 4a.

I started using Motions Oil Moisturizer regular in August 2005 and have been pleased with how my hair looks and feels. I am glad that I gave it a try. One of the best haircare choices I have made. No problems since I started using Motions.

I haven't had any problems using Mizani regular. But I only leave it is the recommended time, my hair still gets bone straight though.

Do you incorporate any protein in your regimen? That may counteract some of the harsh effects of the relaxer you are using.

I've used Phyto 2 and Affirm mild...both great relaxers in my opinion. Never had a problem with either one.
I've relaxed my 4a/b hair bone straight and not as straight with both...I'd highly reccomend them.

Nope, but since learning about relaxers, I'm preparing by doing protein treatments prior to relaxing. How long have you used Mizani?

I use Mizani for fine/color treated hair (even though my hair is neither fine nor color treated). It's not relaxed bone straight. I'm a 4a/4b.

The only times I've noticed a lot breakage were when I was using too much protein and when I was drinking a lot of diet pop. I read that drinking diet pop causes hair loss, but I didn't believe it, and then I saw that it's true. I still drink it, but less than half as much as I used to.

Anyway, my point is that I haven't had an unusual amount of breakage or shedding from the relaxer itself. Except in high school when I was going to a hairdresser that wasn't applying the relaxer correctly. I didn't know that until I started seeing a new hairdresser that told me that my previous hairdresser damaged my hair. I knew that she was messing up my hair, but I didn't realize that she was applying the relaxer incorrectly. All I knew was that my hair was breaking way too much, which is why I stopped seeing that hairdresser.

I think it depends on the condition of your hair. Over the years, I have switched relaxers several times with my (soon to be former) stylist and each time she is always wowed that I only lose 1 hair or no hair during or after the process.

Wow, that's great. Your hair is beautiful by the way. Yeah, I was thinking that too. Before I hardly did protein conditioners, now I'm incorporating in my regime every other week. I alternate moisturizing conditioners and protein. I also have started moisturizing every single day. I can already see a difference in my hair. I was going to relax at 8 weeks, but I'm thinking about going my usual 13 to see how my hair does this time around. I normally start to lose tons of hair due to breakage and shedding when I stretch. With this new regime, I might do all right.

I've used Dudley's Mild and Nairobi, both lye, with no problems. I have fine hair, and these let me retain my thickness. The one time I used Affirm, no lye, it was a rap...my hair must be too fine for that relaxer!

I have been using Mizani for about 6 mos now. I used to use optimum and I have noticed a HUGE difference! I do a protein/reconstructor right after i relax and follow with a moisturizing conditioner. Also if I were you I would use a good protein treatment like once every month.
