Allandra, her hair was jacked, part weave with tons of gel around the edges and it was starting to flake up lol. What she said didnt really bother me, but the fact that she had the audassity to give out her card WHILE shes cashiering at Kmart is what got me lol, oh and i did ask her why she thought i was gonna mess up my head, was there something wrong with 911?, she said its alright but she just heard alot of people complaining about it breaks off thier hair. Well i have been using it for almost 2 wks now, and not one strand as come out.

Sounds like her hair looked pretty jacked up. You should have been the one handing her a card (with this web site address).

It's funny how people will say in a second 'it'll break your hair off' and have no other reason. I think it's the quickest thing that comes to their mind. I hope no one with jacked up looking hair tries to offer me advice OR a business card.

Re: What\'s Wrong With \"Boxed\" Perms? (kinda\' long

oooh Peachtree! Gurrrl I'm just cracking up here! I'm sleepy and bored here at work and your story gave me a good laugh to start my morning off!
laugh.gif
The first thing I was thinking while reading when that heifer said something about your hair being messed up is..."She must have had her hair in a bun because if it was down I'm sure she wouldn't make that comment!" Then I was thinking..."oooh I hope she took down and swung it!"
laugh.gif
I'm soooo glad you took it down!

Anyway, I think that's a scam (yes scam!) to get you to become one of her customers, then take all of your money! She probably wouldn't even do as well a job as you do. Probably would mess it up, then tell you it's something you're doing wrong just to keep you coming back to her! It happened to me everytime I would get my hair looking healthier myself, then go to a stylist. All of them (except for 2) messed my hair up! And...the ONLY time I ever had a problem with a boxed perm was when I used Just For Me for my daughter years ago. A few other mothers I know had problems too. That stuff took out chunks of my daughter's hair. One honest stylist told me it was probably the shelf life of the product and that it was old when I bought it. Now, when I go to the Beauty Supply Stores I always reach towards the back for my products (oh, but I never used that Just For Me again) and I pay attention to what's going fast or not. Other than that one time I've NEVER had a problem with the boxed perms themselves (unless it was the wrong kind for my hair because everyone's hair is differnt) and I've been using them for as long (or longer) as you have. Honestly, any problems I ever had with my hair were do to my own ignorance of how to or how often to apply it to my new growth, not enough moisture, ect... You know just unaware of how to really take care of my hair.

One more thing...If that so called stylist (so called because now she's asking you for tips!)is shopping there at the Beauty Supply House, she probably buys box kits too!

omg that is actually a good idea. if someone who is a so-called professional tries to give you advice for your hair you should wipe out a card with this website's address on. and say its apparent that you need this more than i do. man what would be a good slogan to put on the card. i see a lot of ladies totally abusing their hair and so quick to tell you what isnt good for your hair.

Re: What\'s Wrong With \"Boxed\" Perms? (kinda\' long)

Oooh Adrienne, not urine...I bet somebody would have believed that too...

I thought you were still using the Dark and Lovely No-Lye. How long have you been using Affirm Lye?

PeachTree,

Before I went natural, The last relaxer type of relaxer I used was that Optimum No-Lye. I used to love that perm. But, I made so many mistakes using relaxers and having relaxed hair, that my hair looked pretty, but it stayed short.

I'm sure you've been asked this before, but how do you keep from overlapping when you do it yourself, especially at the length your hair is?

Re: What\'s Wrong With \"Boxed\" Perms? (kinda\' long

AHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Peachtree I just read the part about the blue and white bottles! She bought SPRITZ??!!
rofl.gif
Now...her smart alec a$$ should have known better! If her friend is a stylist surely she would KNOW that stuff is bad for your hair!
oooh! serves them right! I loooove how that story ended with the tables turning like that.

Re: What\'s Wrong With \"Boxed\" Perms? (kinda\' long

I agree with the poster that said it probably has something to do with the lye/no-lye debate. I've also heard that boxed perms are bad because they stay on the shelf for years. But if they are mixed at home and the leftovers have to be thrown away, they should be fresher than the pre-mixed ones...

I think it was something started by the pros to frighten "kitchen beauticians".

Edited to add:
I remember when people first started using Mane & Tail shampoo and conditioner. My stylist told me if I used it all my hair would fall out. She "knew" several people who had used it and their hair fell out.

Peachtree. HAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!! That is funny. I like you Peachtree because you showed those Foolish women a damn lesson. Come on now that was stupid saying don't use boxed perms. She was trying to do that to you. I have short hair so they don't do that to me. But dang I get boxed perms and they do good to me. What fools. If I had long hair I would shake my head so my hair can slap their faces, walk away, and flick one finger. LOL.

That's what they get. Those fools.

Re: What\'s Wrong With \"Boxed\" Perms? (kinda\' long)

Hi peachtree.....

I have a friend who use to do hair professionally and she told me that the box perms are not as concentrated as the jar perms and have a shorter shelf life. Now me personally, I only use Lye based perms because my experience with no lye caused me much breakage! Your hair is really pretty so whatever you are doing it is working for you!....unfortunately alot of hair stylist think they know the answers exclusively about hair, but I think this site proves that is not always the case!

MsChiChi, Well, I don't have a perfect system to avoid overlapping... in fact, I'm sure that i've overlapped... Optimum "boxed" has a pre-treatment conditioner to apply on already relaxed hair. This helps to fight some of the damage from the overlapping... I have to say this however... get ready...
shocked.gif
shocked.gif
... prior to my healthy regime (9 mths ago), I used to intentionally overlap... yep, I applied the relaxer to root to ends, 2-3 times a yr. Surprisingly though, the overlapped hair isn't "fried", "dried out", "damaged", nor "thinned out". I've talked to my neighbor's stylist & he says it's because I have been using the no-lye
confused.gif
... he went further to say had I overlapped that many times with lye, I woulda' surely "lost" those strands of hair....God knew I was a fool... that's why he took care of me

Well, I usually don't have any relaxer left after touching up my new growth, especially when i wait 5 mths between. But on the rare occasion when I do, I always toss it cuz I don't touch up again for 4-6 mths later...it'll definitely go bad by that time...

dag the fact that you do it all and your hair looks gorgeous says that you know what your hair needs and dont need anyone trying to pass off as a professional telling you what your hair does and doesnt need. the fact that the lady was so eager for your knowledge shows that they too know very little about hair care and are probably holding on to age old myths that should have died a horrible death a long time ago. and the proof is in the pudding because at least you had something to back up your claims with. God bless you all.

Re: What\'s Wrong With \"Boxed\" Perms? (kinda\' long)

First of all, your hair looks so gorgeous! Keep up the good work! They should get some hair tips from you.

As for as boxed relaxers, I myself have been using them for fifteen years now and it never did anything to my hair. As a matter of fact I use the exact same relaxer you use and it works well with me. I've been doing my own hair because I'm too lazy to go the salon and plus it's cheaper.

With beautiful hair like yours, you will get obnoxious know-it-all stylists like the ones you have encountered. I'm glad that you didn't let them talk you into doing your hair.

Just thinking about it makes me shudder. I'm trying to reach the same length as yours.

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!
