So after listening to this mans testimony about how his out of body experience. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CB6_QMHf0Uk&feature=related

I was wondering. Spirtually, what is going on when a person is in a coma? What are you guy's thoughts?

The one thing that even doctors admit is when a patient is in a coma, they can hear and remember those that visited, things that were going on at the time that they should have no knowledge of.

We go to ethier heaven or hell, so his story really intrigued me, as do all the millions of stories of people being raised from the dead or coming back and telling about their afterdeath experiences in Heaven or Hell.

This is a very sensitive subject so I had to pray & think hard about my response and I hope it helps this discussion.

Spiritually, that person is unconscious but still alive because they have the breath of life from God. Depending on the coma level they may still retain a level of awareness that allows them to respond or recall family visits, prayers and such and most importantly be stimulated back to consciousness at different points by human intervention.

People in comas can have recall and dreams because they're alive. Because of their loss of control, it's hard to say where exactly those visions may come from. But no one has a round-trip ticket between heaven and earth except Jesus. That is one of the points He was making in John 3:13 KJV. He is the only one that can tell you about heaven.

I think the growing trend where comatose or anesthesized patients are being thought to have the 'supernatural powers' that dead people are claimed to have, with respect to knowledge of and visits to heaven adds further to the deception of the state of the dead. People are now claiming to have died and come back at will or stimulated back by the voices of their loved ones or their doctors. No human being dead or alive has that power or authority.

Like a coma patient, a dead person is also unconscious but the Bible says:

"The dead know not anything...their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished" (Ecc. 9:5,6). There is no "wisdom in the grave" (Ecc. 9:10)

The thread "Do you take the Bible literally?" from p3 has a lot more reference texts on why the dead are not conscious of anything and why they're not in heaven. It also references when they will be ALL raised from the dead and stimulated back to consciousness by God- at the end of this earth.

I agree, and that's the thing; people in comas aren't dead, so when they wake up they didn't "come back from the dead". Another point I made before is that God gets the final say, it's not in our control. So just like Lazaras, when someone does die and come back, it's only because God let them, it was already in His plan. So according to God that person wasn't even dead, God knows and decides when someone is DONE. And that's the end. There's no more choosing or praying or raising them up.

I've never been in a coma, but I imagine the experience is like being in a lucid dream. There's been times when I've been sleeping, but half conscious. I could hear what people were saying, but I wasn't awake and even continued to dream, though whatever was around me ended up in my dreams.

That is probably referring to the flesh because the soul lives on and is very much conscious of what is happening and what they have done and omitted in their walk on earth.

I have heard of personal experiences happening with patients of mine who have either died (cardiac arrest) or died (suddenly stopped breathing) and had spiritual experiences. Others who died and came back did not experience anything (some experienced peace) but no visions... I do not know what to "believe" But I do know what is promised to me by the Word.
