dayum, it would be that bad. I can't help it I have to wear weave. I don't look good without. Cause I got short skimpy ear lentgh hair now.

If weaves were not an option at all, I think It would force more women to change their haircare practices.

[/ QUOTE ]

Ooooh Chasney, those are strong words, "no options" and "force". Some of those ladies'll put a beatdown on you just for suggesting that you gone take away their weaves away.

blossom: i didn't mean that people wouldn't look good natural; i only meant that most of us are so used to the ease of careing for a weave that we wouldn't know where to start, let alone how to care for it... most girls i see walking around just before they're about to get they're weaves done after payday have badly damaged hair. i for one just learnt how to properly care for my hair, but i'll be the first to admit that when i didn't know squat i was walking around looking toe up!!! lol from the flo up! i never wore a weave but damn, it sure looked like i did. *L*

I don't know, I love some weave, and I've worn some kind a fake hair off and on since the 6th grade.

I think weave is also the cause of a lot of our problems, because we use it as a crutch so we don't have to take care of our hair.
We all know some one (myself included) who has gotten braids and decided that smooth braids are more important than the health of our hair and scalp and not
washed for months.

It would be great b/c we would have more disposable income for important thinks like conditioners.
We would also be great because we would avoid stylist who couldn't help us grow our own hair and they would go out of business!

Someone said the world would be a pretty boring place and I agree. I love seeing some of the lovely weaves that my sisters are sporting. Now, the ashy ones, that's another story...:D

Then we wouldn't have some of the beautiful braided weave styles.

I say everyone is entitled to being themselves. If you look good, fine. If you want to look tore up, then fine. It's your life. We can't continue to define our whole race on hair!

You know where you would start? From the beginning. You would cut all your hair off and start over.

You'd be surprised how fast your hair would begin to grow, especially with the knowledge at this board.

Before you knew it, you'd have a head full of healthy, natural hair and wouldn't know what hit you.

One day, when I'm older (50), I'm thinking of cutting all my hair off and starting over. All natural!

No perm, no color, no nothing! Only what God intended

I think the point is THEY do it, but no one cleans their clock the way our clocks get cleaned.

Why is it okay for THEM to wear weaves, but not us, and when we wear a weave or grow our own hair long, we are accused of "trying to be white"?

Is the white woman getting a curly perm or a suntan trying to be black? Is she criticized and accused of wanting to be black, simply because she has a dark tan?

I think it's the hypocrisy that bothers most of us ladies. Black women are constantly nailed to the proverbial cross and this is one BLACK WOMAN THAT IS SICK OF IT!

[/ QUOTE ]

No one is more gulity of "criticizing" black women on the weave issue more than other [/b]Black Women[/b]. We have black women who see a black woman with long hair and become obessed with finding out whether or not she's wearing a weave or not and if she is wearing a weave, that black woman calls her out on it. Sadly, more times than not, It's driven by envy/jealousy not concern. Alot of times, black women are black women own worst enemy.

I still don't understand why what other races do have to do with what we do to oursleves. It's not just the hair issues with us, but issues that affects us as a people and a in the community in general.

My comment wasn't a reply to your post. The reason I posted my comment was because I get annoyed when we're talking about what WE do to oursleves and someone come in saying "well, whites(or other races) do it too" as if we need their actions/them to validate what we do to oursleves or it's ok because they do it too. As if we can't stand alone on our issues.

Yes, I was trying to say that it is a shame for white women to be able to get away with it without notice and ridicule but black women get slammed for it. And when they do see us with long natural hair we get stared at or strangers come and try to feel for tracks. They don't even give the white ladies a second thought.

You know this type of thing usually happens even in everday conversation. That is getting off the subject. I was just trying to make a point not change the subject of the thread!

Yea, unfortunately, this is true. I have 2 cousins who both have long hair and always have.

Now that I've grown my hair pass my ear, they are obsessed with knowing if it's real or fake.

They even did a 3 way conference call to my sister one night demanding to know if my hair was real and she insisted for the 50th time that it is, but they still hung up unsure.

You're right. Black women are very jealous of one another, especially when they see one with long hair. I actually feel afraid sometimes of being accosted and I can't stand the stares, glares and questions "is that your hair?" UGH!

That hasn't happened to me yet, uninvited women digging in my hair to see if I'm real or not, but the day it does, look for me on the 11 o'clock news, because all hell would have broken out in northern California!

Nessa, you're breaking my heart. I'm sure you can make your chin length hair look very nice with all the tips on this board. If you decide to get the weave, PLEASE don't try to cut corners and pinch pennies. Get it hooked up by someone who knows what they are doing. A bad weave is really sad. And I know a lot of people who took their weave out and their hair was in worse shape than before they put it in.

IMO, it would be harder to maintain than your real hair. You have to care for the weave and your real hair underneath the weave.

ITA. I'm a wrestling fan and I am convinced that Torrie Wilson wears clip on extensions. I mentioned it to a white male and he said, "White girls have fake boobs, not fake hair."

Edited to add a pic of Torrie for the folks who don't know who the

A guy told me that when a white woman strikes it rich, she gets fake boobs; when a black woman strikes it rich, she gets fake hair.

Do you know a Bay Area DJ (she wasn't black), accused Mary J. Blige of this on the radio, a predominantly black music radio, and they FIRED her a$$!? LOL!

It went like this: Why do black women, as soon as they get some money (talking about Mary), go and get a weave?

[/ QUOTE ]
why don't she get ofF mary's tracks and get some business of her own! see that' what i hate about weaves everybody wanna a be all in youR scalp! let mary be the diva she was ment to be and enjoy her hair, SHE PAYED FOR IT!. it's better that she have a weave then end up bald headed due to styling stress! AAARRRRRGGGGGGG!

That's exactly what I was thinking. Black women haven't ALWAYS worn weaves, so how could we become "boring" if we were to stop wearing them? Makes no sense to me. With the amount of variety of hairstyles you can do on our own hair, especially natural hair, I can't see how "boring" the world would become.

IMO, a lot of weave styles (esp on celebs) look similar to me, long n shiny. Celebs without weaves - now there's a thought!

The woman that plays the mom on "That's So Raven" has nice hair. Lark Voorhies' hair always looks good. Long, short, curly, straight... I hate her.

The Mowry Twins have nice hair, too. I also like Resurrection Blvd's Marisol Nichols' hair.

The daughter on "My wife and my kids" is BEAUTIFUL!

I also like both the sister's on "Half and Half"
I'm pretty sure both wear their real hair.

I don't think Ashanti wears weave either, but I could be mistaken.

WTH! You mean to tell me that you guys have strangers coming up to you and feeling your hair!? I mean I can understand kids doing that but grown ups come on now!

My friend told me that this homeless lady went up to this girl on the subway and started feeling all through her hair saying how pretty it was. The girl quickly got off at the next stop.
