What Works, and What Does Not

One of the many joys and challenges for me on my journey to stronger, longer, and healthier hair is discovering which products and hair care methods have been effective and ineffective.

Here's what works for my hair:

*Rolling my hair every night. I use a setting lotion. Combined with the oils already on my ends, the process provides wonderful moisture for my hair, not to mention nice body for my fine hair.

*Using creams, such as Profectiv Root Health on my scalp. It nourishes my hair as well.

*Kenra products, esp. the Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner, and the Daily Provision Leave-In Spray Conditioner.

*Profectiv Healthy Ends - when used sparingly, and as needed, helps to make my ends less dry. Otherwise, my hair goes into product and protein overload.

*Heat in moderation - I am experimenting with air drying. I may combine a partial air dry with a partial blowdry. Still, my hair really benefitted from the complete air dry it received on Wednesday evening.

What Does Not Work:

*Wrapping my hair at night - not only is my hair too flat, it is often left dry, depsite the fact that I wear a satin wrap. Which leads me to have to load up on product to moisturize it.

*Overloading my hair with too much product to keep it moisturized. My hair, esp. my ends, suffered from product overload, and became weaker, i.e. a bit more breakage.

Applying Oils- they work reasonably well on my hair when it is damp, but I have not been too impressed with their performance on my hair when dry.

*Using end treatments, such as TIGI Bedhead's Ego Boost. Again, product and protein overload.

*Lubricating my ends every night. My ends could not take it, and had the opposite effect of what was to have occured.

*Using too many products within a short period of time, and using too many products when washing and conditioning my hair. I need to keep it simple for the most effective results, and to commit to the same products for a period of time.

*Extending my relaxers - my 4b natural hair is too tight and too coily for this, resulting in snapping hairs.

Still undecided about:

*Using my ceramic flat iron. Perhaps if I air dry, then use the flat iron, it may be a healthier way to style my hair.

*Completely air drying my hair. As I said above, I need to experiment with this method in order to see what works best for my hair.

Have not tried:

*Conditioner Washes

Anybody else???

I want to add one more thing under the "What Works" category:

washing and conditioning my hair twice a week, as opposed to once a week.

You know...I had not really considered this, but maybe I am screwing up my ends with "product overload". I am going to slow it down
smile.gif
.

What works:
Scalp massages
Frequent washes
Surge
Sleeping on satin
Protective buns

What does not work:
Braids
Regular trims

Still undecided on:
Vitamins
Carrot juice
Eggs (for l-cysteine)

what works

coconut & jojoba oil
cod liver oil vitmains
sleeping in a satin cap
washing frequently

what doesnt work

Elasta Mago Butter
ooo.gif

wrapping hair
washing once a week

undecided:
no longer using hair grease

what works:
Nexxus shampoo and conditioner-cant go wrong
NTM Line
Frequent deep conditioning
Pretreatments
Elasta QP recovery mixed with oil as a moisturizer
air drying in a ponytail, then doing a braidout or bantus
Even if I wear my hair down to go somewhere, I put it up when I come home
Frequent washing-2 X week or more depending on activity
BONE COMBS (my new love! lol...)
putting in a little leave in when my hair feels dry
sealing damp ends w/groafrohairlong.com method
direct heat only at salon and on special occasions
vitamins-I am a picky eater and dont eat much variety so I know Im missing out on lots of nutrients

What doesnt:
using too many products at once
combing my hair more than once a day
vaseline on dry ends--a no no, so sticky I pull them out
blow drying--never again unless an absolute emergency

stretching relaxers--no matter what I did, my hair was snapping at the new growth when I waited 10 weeks
8 weeks for me from now on!

What works:

-Eating a healthy well-balanced diet high in protein
-Drinking lotss of water
- Exercise! ... Simply walking for about 40 minutes 5 days per week has increased my hair growth rate dramatically.
smile.gif

-Using only salon products (Kera Care and Design Essentials) and natural products (Aubrey Organics and jojoba oil etc.)
-Air drying
-Conditioner washes with Aubrey GPB followed by KeraCare Humecto

What doesn't work:

-Relaxing too often (I think spacing out relaxers as long as possible has caused my hair to be healthier over all)
-Scissor-happy stylists
-Fine-tooth combs
- A lot of the drugstore products don't work for me but I'm sure there are some that would I just haven't tried them yet.

I'm still trying to find out what works for my hair at its current stage. For a the last few months conditioner washes and airdrying 3-5 times per week was working. I always wore protective styles (still doing that as always
smile.gif
). But as I get more and more new growth, the detangling has gotten crazy. My newgrowth loves the water and the frequent conditioning, but my relaxed ends don't
frown.gif
I was getting a golf-ball sized ball of hair every single time I washed
shocked.gif
So I've recently taken to washing once a week and blowdrying the roots straight so that they will still be manageable even though I'm not washing often.

I've only been doing this about 2 and a half weeks, but so far so good
smile.gif
What's working is moisturizing day and night with Profectiv Long N Healthy (and sometimes using the Daily Replenisher from the Relax line), and wearing my hair exclusively in a bun. Back before I discovered hair boards I always washed once a week. But after going so many months with doing frequent washes, it's weird to not get my hair wet all week. I can't remember the last time I wore a shower cap so regularly (unless my hair was soaking with conditioner under it
laugh.gif
)

I had a couple unopened bottles of vitamins left over from back when I was taking them sort of regularly (I never did REALLY stay consistent with it
ohwell.gif
) so I started again a few nights ago, and have been drinking more water. It hasn't been long enough to see effects yet, but I do know I feel better (probably because of the water
smile.gif
) and my scalp is bristling and such
trampoline.gif
(PP Biotin really ain't no joke, y'all
laugh.gif
) Right now I don't really have a full vitamin regimen, I'm just using up this last bit of stuff. I'm currently researching hair vitamins so that towards the end of September, about when I'm headed back to school, I can get started for real. I'm gonna really be diligent this time
smile.gif

So far I know what works is being consistent with whatever you do. What doesn't work is trying 5 million different things without taking the time to discern what works best for your hair and sticking to it. I'm determined not to buy any more hair stuff until I finish all the stuff I have. Today I'm going to go through all my hair products and decide what to keep, what to throw away, and what to take to the St. Louis meeting
laugh.gif

ive deduced salerm 21 doesn't work as well on my 4a/b nappy hair.
Suave milk and honey, aussie hair insurance and dove DO work WONDERS.

plaiting at night doesnt seem to work, either.
twists work at retaining length.

it's taken me about a year to figure this out. so far:

What works:
creme of nature shampoo no more then once a week
conditoner washes with super moisturizing conditioners (Keracare humecto, Kenra, Motions Moisture Plus, etc.)
Aubrey Organics products
WGO
Shea Butter
Overnight moisturizing treatments (sleeping with plastic cap on) once or twice a week
Braid-Outs!
Country Life Biotin (thickened my hair)
Biolage Leave-in

What does not work:
Hardcore protein treatments (Aphogee, Emergencee,etc.)
LeKair cholesterol (I don't know why but it does nothing for my hair)
Nexus Humectress
Bantu Knots
Too much heat styling
Hair Stylist
Too much combing
Leave-in conditioners that contain protein

Jury still out on:
Wet Buns
Extending relaxers beyond 6-8 weeks
Daily moisturizers- can't find one that does not leave my hair hard.

What Works

-Frequent Washing WITH shampoo
-Conditioner washes with extremely light protein based conditioners. My CW product has to have very little slip also. My hair gets too soft otherwise.
-Streamlined use of products on wash day - shampoo, conditioner, leave in. That's it.
-Using conditioner as a moisturizer instead of actual "hairdressing". Conditioner is the best moisturizer for me. The best. Hands down.
-Moisturizing ever 3 or 4 days instead of daily
-Serum! To minimize breakage. When my hair is going snap crackle pop in the comb, I apply some serum.
-Waiting too long between relaxers. 10 weeks is my official limit.
-Product Lines - Overall? I'm sold on Kenra, Elasta and Nexxus. They'll be my staples when I run out of the all of the products I own from collecting them over the years.
- Rollersetting
-Sleeping in loose buns on rollerset hair - protects and the next AM style is pretty.

What Doesn't
-Sulfate Free shampoo...in order for one of these to work the cleanser must be Cocamide Betaine or Olefin C16 somthing or another. Otherwise, it's itchy scalp city. I think I'm allergic to the other non- sulfate based shampoos.
-Greasing my scalp
-Airdrying too often - after a while my hair just tweaks out.
-most kitchen chemist projects that I undertake. I've accepted that I'm going to just have to buy my products. Baking Soda in your shampoo, honey in your conditioner...NONE of that works on my hair.
-Trimming alot. I gain no length when I do.
-Anything designed to speed up your growth rate. My hair grows at it's own pace (slow), and there ain't much I can do to convince it to go any faster.
-Lots of wet hair manipulation - wet buns, wet braidouts...too much breakage. My hair is too long for wet buns to be possible anymore unless they are really sloppy and unfit for public viewing.
-Leaving my hair down. It's just too delicate for that these days...

I took some advice on con washes with light protein and had a good outcome. I used AO GBP. My hair was relatively easy to detangle and feels much softer.

What Works For Me:
Suave Milk & Honey Conditioner
Air-Dyed hair
Kenra products (just found this out yesterday...I love it)
Daily Bun Styles
Panteen DMR

What Does Not Work For Me:
ALL heated prodcuts
Small tooth combs
V05 Starwberries & Cream (I used to love this, but it made my hair shed overtime)

What works:
Surge
Vitamins
AO GPB as my protein - in love with this
More water (to help with the vitamins)
Airdrying (supergirl's method)
Stretching my relaxers
Design Essentials and Carol's Daughter

What Doesn't Work:
Washing more than 1x a week (the manipulation is killing my hair kinda like Black Cardinal was talking about)

Doing Braidouts wet (love them but they tangle my hair toooo much)

Using too much moisture (my hair gets mushy really quick)

Using too much oil on my ends

What Works

using mild relaxers only
spacing out touch ups
dentangling shampoo
moisturizing conditioners
glycerin and water spritz
healthy hair butter
WGO
viviscal
satin scarves
straightening my hair after shampooing

What Does Not

extensions
air drying

suave m&h as a pre poo treatment
humectress as a leave in
design essentials mild lye relaxer

ORS olive oil sheen instead of Motions/Isoplus/Lusters

What Does Not Work:

scissor happy stylists
relaxer happy stylists
tracks
blowdrying on HIGH
co washes

Well, this works now:

Washing and conditioning once a week. I wash with Keracare line moisturizing shampoo. I mix GPB and Cathy Howse Deep Conditioner together and put on a cap for 30 minutes under a dryer, mild heat. I use Keracare Humecto 15 minutes, no heat. Just before coloring my hair to get rid of gray every 6 weeks or so with a semi-permanent black color, I switch up and use a clarifying shampoo and Nexxus Ensure followed by Humecto.

Otherwise:

Surge 2-3 times a week about two weeks from the re-touch.

Profective Long and Healthy sparingly on ends, sealed in
with Liv hairdressing, bun hair and silk scarf at night.

A little Liv hairdressing and Fantasia IC Hair Polishing Styling Gel (it's alcohol free) mixed together is used to smooth my hair into the phony pony.

What does not work:
Heavy proteins
Washing more than twice a week
Suave products
Neutrogena Deep Moisture
Can't wet set to save my life
Braid or twist sets
Constant manipulation of any kind
Direct heat
