What to use on my Newborns hair

My new bundle of Joy will be here in a few weeks. I have an older daughter who will be turning 8 next week and for the life of me I can't remember what I used in her hair as a newborn. I have purchased California Baby shampoo and body wash to wash the babies hair. Which has No harsh Chemicals in it - this is a shampoo. I am wondering about conditioning. Does an infant need conditioning? What should I stay away from, ie things that may cause cradle scalp. And for everyday styling what should I use. Please help a sista out. It's been waayyy to long.

Thanks!

I know nothing about babies, and don't really know what cradle crap is, but my boyfriends mom recently told me she used to put olive oil in his hair
as a baby.

My baby is two months old. I use olive oil in his hair. Works good. My Mother-in-Law told me about it said she used it on all of her kids.

I hear that jojoba is good. It conditions the hair and scalp, prevents dryness, and restores manageability. Jojoba relieves babies' cradle cap and is far more congenial to the hair and scalp than olive or other vegetable oils or mineral oils. Jojoba is the closes you can get to natural sebum.

You can also mix jojoba in products (shampoo, conditioner, etc) that you like.

CONGRATULATIONS on your soon to be here new bundle of joy!

Olive oil is probably the best thing for body and hair at that tender precious age.

we did baby oil :look: that was before i came here and found out it was banned LOL
i think olive or any natural oil used in moderation is ok

Congrats on your expected bundle

I read that newborns through age 1 really don't need anything in their hair. However, I agree with the other ladies who recommended using olive oil, or any other non-perfume laden, chemical heavy oil, especially to remove cradle cap.

My daughter is now 18 months old. When she was a newborn I used Johnson's no tears shampoo with "built in" :) conditioner. Aveeno is a good option on poo also. For moisture I used coconut oil in her hair only when needed. I would say while the baby is still in the 1st 3 months you should use as little products as possible.

I don't think cradle cap is something to be prevented- either you have it or you don't. My second son did have cradle cap and after trying every natural remedy in the book I finally tried Neutrogena T-Gel shampoo and it cleared it right up.

My favorite baby products are Mustella baby products. They have a skin and hair shampoo which smells great and is extra gentle. I've never tried California Baby products because their shampoo still has sulfates in it (I don't use sulfates period because of skin allergies). I've also used Baby Oh Baby shampoo which worked great. Conditioner shouldn't really be needed for the first few months- I used Healthy Times Chamomille Conditioner. California Baby has a nice line of conditioners for babies also.

Most people I've known just stick with Johnson and Johnson products- but because of my hyper sensitive skin (I'm allergic to everything it seems) I choose to stick to natural sulfate free products just in case my babies were just as sensitive.

And congrats on your upcoming arrival :)

Thank you ladies!!! I have really been pondering this for sometime. And wasn't really sure if conditioner was needed, what to use, etc.... I will definetly keep a supply of olive oil and I will also get the jojoba oil. Both sound like exactly what I will be needing. Thanks on the congrads! I am counting down the weeks tell the babys born, can't wait to meet her.

Take care!

I agree with above. My pediat suggested Neutorgena T-Gel shampoo for cradle cap and rub with a soft toothbrush in the scalp area where the cradle cap is to remove.

My daughter's hair gets so dry so I stopped using the J&J no tears shampoo. Now I use a moist shampoo from another co I can't recall. Mustela's baby products are great too.

I follow up with Olive Oil Hair lotion by ORS.

When my daughter was a baby I used Castor Oil and Johnson's Baby lotion on her hair. It worked great! I would use Johnson & Johnson Shampoo. I never used baby oil because it causes cradle crap.

hey i'm a teenager and don't have a baby or am not close to having one, but all my little cousins were raised around me, so i did notice some things... i realize that some products change the hair texture of the kid. Some of their hair became kinkier. it's not that what grows out of their scalp is different b/c of the product, but as it comes out, the product is used again on the NG so it seems like it all changed *kinda like getting a perm, get me?* I noticed it on 3 of my baby cousins and luckily i stopped one of my aunts from using the product in time. It was some detangler or something.

that's just for future references, but I guess that since you're using completely natural products, you won't have that problem. Good luck
