What to say when a stylists wants to trim

What is the best way to handle a stylist who wants to trim your hair when you feel it's not necessary? My new stylist is great as she cares about the health of hair and is not quick to touch up--she suggest stretching out relaxers. However she does beleive that hair needs to be trimmed often to remove dead ends and keep heair healthy. She feels that one and a half to two inches need to be trimmed.
I believe trims are important in maintaining a healthy-looking style, but not necessary for growth or for preventing split ends. Hair can be healthy without trims, as long as ends are not split, dry, or breaking. My ends seem to be fine. I self tirm, only 1/4 inch at a time, every two-three months. About three months ago I got a big trim, about two inches off and my ends looked no healthier than it does now or when I only take off 1/4-1/2 inch. They only looked shorter.:(

Okay back to my original ? What are some good lines to give a potentially SHS? I do plan on saying no, but I'd like to do it with grace.:)

No, thank you-I trim my own hair, or No, thank you-I do not want it cut. Be firm and speak up...some will act like they didn't hear you, and trim anyway!

I like the "No thanks, I trim myself" approach.

I wish that, when I was going to salons, I had the courage to say that. My stylist used to trim my hair EVERY 2 WEEKS!!! I would just sit there seething.

Now that I am older, I would have no problem saying it. But stylist used to intimidate me, which made it difficult to speak up.

You're right about not getting specific about your reasons why. That's when the attitudes start.

I usually just say no and that I have a person that trims my hair. Also ask them if it's free.

A simple "no thanks" should be fine...if she persits, after she finishes talking repeat it again "no thank you"

That's what I do when at the dom salon and they tell me I need a relaxer or a trim.

I wouldn't do that. There are stylist that will trim for free. And they do this b/c they think it would be less work to chop your hair off and have less hair to deal with. A firm "no" is suffice.

Even if they say it's free I would pretend to ponder and still say no thanks. I guess I'm just being a smart arse.

So far I haven't had a stylist say that a trim is free. Back in the day it was free but now everyone that I've been to in the past charges 15-20 dollars.
